TMZ with less hedging:
NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and cops are investigating a shooting ... multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ.
Cops are currently at Seau's home just outside San Diego. Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.
Seau was a beast in the NFL -- skyrocketing to fame thanks to his explosive play with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. The USC standout was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1990 and played in the league for 20 years.
Seau was involved in a car accident back in 2010 when he drove his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA hours after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Seau later said he was not trying to kill himself ... insisting he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Suicide?
TMZ says yes in developing the story:
NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and a law enforcement source at the scene tells us cops believe he shot himself.
Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.
Cops are currently at Seau's home -- located in San Diego County -- and were seen talking with a man who was inside the house and appeared distraught.
We're told Seau sent text messages to his ex-wife and 3 kids yesterday saying, "Love you." We're told they all responded and didn't suspect anything was wrong. We're told he last saw his kids 3 weeks ago.
Sources close to Seau tell us family members didn't notice any signs of depression in recent weeks.

They are saying self inflicted gun shot wound to the chest. Speculation is that he intended to do that in order preserve his brain the way Duerson did last year so it can be studied.
He also reportedly texted his family yesterday to say that he loved them.

Back when Duerson played (and for pretty much Seau's entire career), players would just get right back on the field without getting properly assessed. What's sad is that even though they've improved on this, you still have situations like Colt McCoy's last year. He was obviously concussed but they kept him on the field.
The brain is MUCH more susceptible to concussion after you've already suffered one--and playing through a concussion is basically a guaranteed ticket to some form of brain damage down the line.

Yup, it's barbaric to think about. What's eerie is he probably did his research to figure out what angle/location would provide the quickest death. Still, missing the mark and having to deal with that pain while waiting for your lungs to drown in your blood can't be a pleasant way to go.
OT, but 5 years ago I responded to an attempted suicide where a guy put a shotgun under his chin...while he was leaning over to pull the trigger the barrel moved up on him and he ended up blowing his face off, but living. Was quite a sight.

Six months ago we noted that linebacker Lew Bush had died of an apparent heart attack, only six days after his 42nd birthday, making him, at the time, the seventh member of that team to die. Defensive lineman Shawn Lee died last year of a heart attack at 44. Defensive lineman Chris Mims died in 2008 of complications from having an enlarged heart at age 38. Offensive lineman Curtis Whitley died in 2008 of a drug overdose at age 39. Linebacker Doug Miller died in 1998 after he was struck by lightning, at age 28. Running back Rodney Culver died in 1996 in the crash of ValuJet Flight 592, at age 26. Linebacker David Griggs died in 1995 in a car accident at age 28.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- Former NFL star Junior Seau was found shot to death at his home Wednesday morning in what police said appeared to be a suicide. He was 43.
Police Chief Frank McCoy said Seau's girlfriend reported finding him unconscious with a gunshot wound to the chest and lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. A gun was found near him, McCoy said.
Seau's mother appeared before reporters, weeping uncontrollably.
"I don't understand ... I'm shocked," Luisa Seau cried out.
Her son gave no indication of a problem when she spoke to him by phone earlier this week, she said.
"He's joking to me, he called me a `homegirl,"' she said.

I cannot believe Adam Schefter going to twitter and citing that Seau was never officially listed as having suffered a concussion. He knows full-well the atmosphere of the NFL for a long time saw "head injuries" go unchecked, undiagnosed, hidden and completely swept under the rug because players feared their teammates opinions of toughness more than any long-term side effect.
How many WWII veterans would acknowledge suffering from battle fatigue/shell shock/Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Different generation, different climate, different way of these things being dealt with/worked through.
Also, a concussion itself is a side effect. It's a symptom. I wish they would talk more about sub-concussions. Can't see them, as they have very little immediate symptoms, but with time, they can be devastating.
Think about all the hits Seau leveled. Regardless of whether or not he was ever officially listed, Seau, playing at the level he did for as long as he did at the position he did most certainly suffered forms of head trauma. Regardless of whether it caused the suicide, CTE enables depression, so any other peripheral circumstances that give cause for depression would only further the slide.

This one blows my mind. I have zero clue why I thought "no, not Seau, he wouldn't kill himself" but never the less he did. I don't know the man. All I knows he played football my entire adult life, was good at it, didn't want to stop playing( i thought because he loved it), had 3 kids, married, rich and stayed out of trouble. Regardless on why it happened, one thing will happen. The NFL will look a heck of a lot more into the brain damage it's work causes. Parents will do more research on this sport they are sending there kids into play. The guy might have a ton of reasons other than football to kill himself but for now, all eyes are on the harm this sport causes. God bless

As mentioned, the life expectancy of NFL players is damn short. And it's a tough call if you're NFL-quality talent, if football is what you do best, but not as a regular starter or if you're a reserve lineman. Lineman have short life expectancy not only because of the contact but the size issue. Being 6'5" and 300 lbs, you can only live so long.
I played football as a kid and through high school but I can't imagine adding 4 years of college and a 10-20 year professional career on top of that. Unless you're making a fuckload of money as one of the top players on the team, especially as a quarterback where you'll be hit in the head less often, it can be hard to justify an NFL career. You will suffer concussions, it's unavoidable. Same goes for boxing and MMA. I guess it's those that make it don't really give this subject must thought because they don't have many other promising options.

To add to that, I never understood how pro hockey players don't wear face cages...it blows my mind. In high school, and I would imagine in college, but it's a guess because I don't know much about hockey, people wear cages on the helmets. If I were in the NHL I'd do the same thing. I've worn cages playing roller hockey as a kid and never thought it obstructed my vision.
I just don't understand how it's the norm to leave your face (including eyes) completely exposed to large men skating around at high speeds, checking you into boards at high speeds with a lot of momentum, swinging wooden sticks at high speeds, and relatively heavy pucks flying around at very high speeds. Seems suicidal to me.

The night before he died, he called up old friends to make peace. These friends later stated that Justin ranted about the "devil", "doctors who controlled people with anti-depressants" and "evil people in Pittsburgh". Justin's ex-wife and others maintain that he never sought medical help, however some friends stated that Justin consulted health professionals about what he perceived as his own bipolar disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_disorder). This was a stressful time for Justin, he was still struggling still with his divorce, his ex-wife was engaged to remarry, his football career was over, he was struggling with sobriety, and he had just opened a new business. He had also purchased new family headstone a few months earlier.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Strzelczyk#cite_note-Drove-1)
Justin was supposed to arrive in Orchard Park, New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchard_Park,_New_York) for a fund-raiser that weekend. Concussion theory
It was initially thought that Strzelczyk was under the influence of alcohol or drugs due to his irrational behavior, but this was disproved by toxicity tests. A post-mortem autopsy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autopsy) revealed that he had suffered from brain damage, possibly due to his years of playing football.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Strzelczyk#cite_note-3)
This incident helped start a debate about the seriousness of concussions at the National Football League Summit, in June 2007. There, Bennet Omalu, a Pittsburgh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh) neuropathologist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuropathologist), linked the deaths Strzelczyk and three other retired NFL players to brain damage from football. Those cases involved former Philadelphia Eagles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Eagles) safety (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safety_%28American_football_position%29) Andre Waters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Waters) and former Pittsburgh Steelers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers) offensive linemen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offensive_lineman); Mike Webster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Webster) and Terry Long (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Long_%28American_football%29). Waters and Long committed suicide; Webster died of a heart attack, but suffered from severe mental problems in his later life. Omalu says each death followed a similar line: football concussions, lead to brain damage similar to dementia pugilistica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dementia_pugilistica) (also known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy) in boxers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing), leading to clinical depression (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_depression). It was previously thought to only exist in boxers and steeplechase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steeplechase) jockeys.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Strzelczyk#cite_note-4) In 2007, Justin's mother, Mary Strzelczyk, has gave Dr. Bennet Omalu, permission to examine Justin's brain.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Strzelczyk#cite_note-5)

I understand that. I remember the Chris Benoit case from 2007, and his brain was that of an 85 year old in the last stages of Alzheimer because of chair shots to his head and the multiple concussions that he covered up. Ultimately, we won't know anything until they're able to analyze his brain, and even then we won't know everything.

Family has agreed to allow Seau's brain to be examined.
On Thursday, the death of NFL legend Junior Seau was officially ruled a suicide by the San Diego County medical examiner. While those who knew and loved the man are left to comprehend this, it has now been reported that Seau's family will allow his brain to be examined for damage resulting from concussions and other head trauma the linebacker may have suffered through his 20-year NFL career. The 43-year-old Seau shot himself in the chest at his Oceanside, Ca. home on Wednesday.
The autopsy determining the cause of Seau's death was assisted by Dr. Bennett Omalu, the San Joaquin County chief medical examiner, and the man credited with identifying Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), the neurological disorder caused by repeated head trauma. As the co-founder of the Brain Injury Research Institute, Omalu has been studying the impacts of concussions for years. The institute Omalu co-founded with Dr. Julian Bailes is one organization asking to study Seau's brain; another is the Sports Legacy Institute at Boston University, an organization that has received funding from the NFL.

What makes you think everybody's brain reacts the same way to concussions? Some people may have no ill effects, others lose all short and/or long term memory, others have personality changes or even become suicidal.
What you said is about as stupid as saying "Everybody has a pancreas but most of us are smart enough to not get cancer in it"
Why is the assumption that if an NFL player commits suicide it is because of concussions? People kill themselves without concussions and that holds true even for NFL players.

Why is the assumption that if an NFL player commits suicide it is because of concussions? People kill themselves without concussions and that holds true even for NFL players.
Because we're able to add up simple facts.
1 - NFL linebackers/tackles/ends slam their head into other players multiple times in one game
2 - People with a history of concussions tend to display depression and various other negative factors more often than the normal population
Maybe they just committed suicide, and concussions don't have an effect on that. But that's like saying, "Hey, that dude had to file for bankruptcy, his wife left him for an old buddy, he didn't get visitation rights to his children, but I don't see why you all say that had anything to do with him comitting suicide."

Rascal,
To think that Junior Seau, arguably the most active and physical player of his generation at a position of excessive and routine brutal contact, never had a single concussion in a game rife with examples of how players typically played through them or were failed to be diagnosed for the unseen sickness simply because it was never officially noted on an injury report is some of the worst deductive logic I have ever witnessed.
Again, sub-concussion syndrome is a new study, but the initial findings of devastating.
It sucks for the family and friends. It does and I understand not being sure why someone would do it. Instead of ignorantly passing judgment, maybe you should ask yourself why someone with everything he had going for him, as you mentioned, would opt to end the fabulous life with people who obviously loved him. Think about just how bad the pain must have been for him to determine that suicide was his best recourse.
Just unbelievable...
