Lorenzo Neal is a local (Lemoore HS/Fresno State) former NFL fullback. And a close friend of Seau's. Just saw him (TV news) talking about his relationship with Seau and how he didn't see this coming at all. Mentioned being with him about three weeks ago and how Seau appeared in great spirits/no problems.

Not everyone sends out warnings signals and I've heard that he kept his personal feelings inside and even seeked medical treatment outside the clubhouse to avoid his teammates knowing he was injured.

I haven't read a whole lot on the story but I did hear that another football player recently committed suicide in a similar way so that his brain would be intact to do studies on to learn about the long term impact football contact on the brain.

It's possible Seau was going through similar mental problems, depression, etc. and did the same thing.

It's a tough predicament for the NFL. If this is the case and his suicide note confirms, it's going to break open the proverbial can of worms. Seau was a high profile player, well liked, well respected, etc. It's going to provide even more momentum to the already building recognition that football (in it's current form) is detrimental to health. But for the same reasons that it is dangerous to health, it's why it's the most popular sport in the U.S. Catch 22?

Yeah, I hear you. But they may end up finding that the damage is done well before they get to the pros. So many hits over so much time. They've done studies showing that just heading a soccer ball over a long career can cause permanent injury to the head. I would imagine it's exponentially worse for a lineman who is making head to head contact on every play of every game from age 5-25.

And it may be turn out to be "it is what it is". I'm not judging what's right or wrong and there' probably not any good workaround. But the problem might be in parents letting their kids play football at such young ages where the kid has no way to assess and understand the risk.

Dave Duerson (formerly of the Bears) committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest just couple of years ago. He donated his brain so that it could be studied for the effects of concussion related injuries. I think Seau probably did the same thing.

But, I am confused as to why people are so quick to claim all was fine with him when he drove off a cliff a couple of years ago- and claimed he fell asleep. It happened after he had been arrested.

Nobody has to play football or box. If you are going to play/fight there are risks you have to take. We can't go around trying to play it safe all the time. There is a risk everytime yo get in a car, on a plane. Such is life.

Football is football, if you decide to play you will be taking a chance of being hurt/long range effects. If someone is really worried about that ....don't play. The game cannot be watered down and still be football.

Bummer about a great player/guy like Junior Seau. But there have been tons and tons of NFLers who retired of the league with no problems at all.
