Windows 8 Won't Play DVDs Unless You Pay For the Media Center Pack

"You may already know that Microsoft plans to sell Windows Media Center as a separate, paid pack, but now the company has revealed that Windows 8 will also stop default support for DVD playback (http://pureinfotech.com/2012/05/04/windows-8-stops-dvd-playback-media-center-pack/). You'll only be able to play DVDs and Blu-rays if you upgrade to the Media Center pack (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/05/03/making-windows-media-center-available-in-windows-8.aspx). 'Acquiring either the Windows 8 Media Center Pack or the Windows 8 Pro Pack gives you Media Center, including DVD playback (in Media Center, not in Media Player), broadcast TV recording and playback (DBV-T/S, ISDB-S/T, DMBH, and ATSC), and VOB file playback. Pricing for these Packs, as well as retail versions of Windows 8, will be announced closer to the release date. To give you some indication of Media Center Pack pricing, it will be in line with marginal costs.'"

In a comment, Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky elaborates (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/05/03/making-windows-media-center-available-in-windows-8.aspx#10300802): "(marginal is small, honest, and we just haven't determined the final prices yet based on ongoing work but we are aiming for single digit dollars but we don't control the truly marginal costs). We wanted to include Media Player for everyone without everyone incurring the cost even if they don't even have an optical drive."

i think they may have introduced a beta for blu ray recently, I believe. I was lucky to get AnyDVD HD for a lifetime license a few years ago.

Who watches movies on their computer monitor nowadays anyways?

Why degrade yourself watching an HD movie on a 20 or so inch monitor when you can enjoy it on your sweet 46 inch tv? Doesn't make sense to.

It still is the rave. People still think the monitor to get is a HDTV resolution monitor of 1920 x 1080. Both my monitors are 1920 x 1200.

After using it for a while and seeing the enterprise potential. I cannot call it a failure just yet. It even possibly could be a home run. too early to tell though

nope, Devs won't touch this because of the licensing of windows. It would be illegal and easily traceable back to them. Could also hurt their employment prospects if a potential employer looks them up online and sees that they are working on illegal projects.

Android sucks. I don't know how ppl can even compare it to iOS or even Win. and I have 2 android devices.

iOS is solid. but its so rigid.

If Win can be as solid as iOS and customizable as Android it will be the winner in my book.

This. So much.

Microsoft just obsoleted their supposed flagship phone a little more than two months after it became available on contract. That's 10% of the duration of the contract.

If Apple or Google had launched a new OS version and announced that NONE of their phones currently out would be able to upgrade to it two months after the launch of the 4S/Galaxy Nexus, people would be screaming bloody murder.

Microsoft essentially made Nokia http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-a2m.gif

Always-outspoken Gabe Newell, the big cheese at Valve, made quite a few interesting statements at this year's Casual Connect conference, including the quote above. Gabe believes Microsoft's impending update will drive manufacturers away from the OS and he reiterated Valve's plan to make the entire Steam catalog available on Linux as a "hedging strategy." During the onstage discussion, he also weighed in on the longevity of touch input, which he estimates at a decade, the possibility of tongue control and the future of wearable computers. Other classic quotes include "the next version of Photoshop should look like a free-to-play game," which Adobe apparently didn't quite understand -- and frankly, neither do we.

What aggravates me more is after HL2 in 2004, they said they were going to make the 'Episodes' trilogy which would make up HL3.

They released HL2: Ep 1 in 2006, Ep 2 and 2007....then that's it. What the hell happened?

Blizzard also not fans of windows 8:

http://goo.gl/G0vz0

Calling Windows 8 "a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space" may not endear Valve's Gabe Newell to the folks at Microsoft, but it struck a chord with a member of Blizzard Entertainment's top brass. Rob Pardo, Executive Vice President of Game Design at the Irvine-based company, took to Twitter and chimed in on the matter, stating that Windows 8 is "not awesome for Blizzard either." While far from a resounding indictment, it's not the warmest of welcomes for Redmond's latest desktop OS. By the sounds of it, the October-bound operating system will have to win over a few hearts and minds in the game development community.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/8/4080608/samsung-exec-says-windows-8-is-no-better-than-windows-vista

There's plenty of evidence that Windows 8 isn't the rousing success that Microsoft might have hoped for, but a Samsung executive has taken his criticism a step further than that. "I think the Windows 8 system is no better than the previous Windows Vista platform," Dong-Soo Jun, head of Samsung's memory business, told The Korea Times today. While Fujitsu had previously blamed Windows 8 for its own declining PC sales, this may be the first time a Microsoft partner has dared to compare Windows 8 to Vista — well known as one of Microsoft's failures.

However, if you take Dong-Soo's statement in context, the memory executive may not be speaking out of turn. The quote recorded by The Korea Times came as part of a conversation about the general decline in traditional PC sales, and how Samsung's memory division will cut production of PC memory chips in favor of ones designed to be used in smartphones. Samsung's executive is likely simply saying what we've already heard before: that — not unlike Windows Vista — the new Windows 8 operating system isn't helping the industry to sell more computers. From the perspective of a memory chip vendor, Windows 8 isn't doing much good for the bottom line. Still, his comment may inspire others to more closely consider how Windows 8 compares to previous versions of the operating system.
