The federal government broke its record deficit streak in April, notching its first monthly surplus since the end of the Bush administration, according to preliminary estimates released Monday.

The numbers, compiled by the Congressional Budget Office, mark the first monthly surplus under President Obama, who when he took office in January 2009 began a program of boosted spending and continued tax cuts to try to bolster the foundering economy, but saw those efforts splash red ink across the federal budget.

Boosted by better tax collections and slightly slower spending, the government recorded a $58 billion surplus in April. That’s nearly a $100 billion turnaround from April 2011, when the government ran a $40 billion deficit.http://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/may/7/deficit-streak-ends-obama-first-monthly-surplus/

Even with Monday’s good fiscal news, the government is expected to run a $1 trillion deficit in fiscal year 2012, which began Oct. 1.

Through the first seven months, the deficit was already $721 billion, though that was substantially below the $870 billion deficit at the same point in 2011.

CBO’s analysis said spending on defense, education, Medicaid and unemployment benefits have all fallen this year, while Social Security spending is up.

The nonpartisan scorekeeper releases a preliminary estimate each month. Final figures should come later this week from the Treasury Department.ibid.

Jobs and housing are the priorities, not the federal deficit.

LOL...

People paying their tax bills I bet. Spread out over the year, it's still a deficit.

No shit....I don't like Obama, frankly, I don't like anyone in DC, but even if it's a little bit of "cooked books", at least it's positive for a change. Hell, normally the government can't even lie because it's all just that screwed up.

Usually when someone says "its positive" it generally means good. A negative is usually bad, positive equals good. God bless

Game, this is not a game. He was encouraged our government lied to us. Nothing good comes from lying. They spiral out of control to the point that some folks fool themselves about some of the lies such as our friend in his earlier post suggested for a brief moment. God bless

In the three months ended April, it shows that there were an average 20.3 million people engaged in government work, 1.2 million fewer than the average for the three months ended December 2008. http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2012/05/08/unemployment-rate-without-government-cuts-7-1/
