View Full Version : Why can't the Spurs defend a championship?

I see them ringing this year but as always not even making the finals next year. But why have they failed to defend their 4 trophies? Did they win in the weakest years possible or just a lack of leadership? Or were they too classy to defend those rings?

Too classy imo. They want to spread the wealth around, let other teams get it. Detroit and Miami won while the Spurs faked injuries last year to let _allas get theirs.

Repeating is hard, only a few teams have been able to pull it off in modern NBA history.

No son the Spurs have someone better in Pop.

Phil Jackson had about as much to do with the Bulls and Lakers repeating as that long legged freak Barack Obama had to do with catching and killing Bin Laden. They both had a very tiny role, yet received nearly 100% of the credit.

Just pointing out your homophobic butthurt-ness. Calling everyone a "faggot" doesn't make you as cool as you think it makes you. :lol

tbh, I don't recall any other team on a ring run having the rules changed on them in the middle. In 2005-2006, the NBA aligned from 4 divisions to 6 divisions, and that first year, they automatically awarded 1-3 to the div winners, not just the guarantee of being in the top 4 like it is now. Spurs got hammer fucked into a 4-5 matchup with Sacramento and Mental Whirled Peas, when they had the second best record in the league. He and Bonzi beat the living shit out of Parker and Manu, and we lost in game 7 OT the next round to Dallas.

The Spurs title teams tended to feature a fair number of aging veterans, which meant we frequently had to go out in search of new players to defend titles. Clearest case: David retiring after '03. We also had injuries to Duncan and Ginobili that were factors.

Between the injury risks and the deterioration of age, there were just too many things that could go wrong and derail the team. When you combine that with other teams that weren't standing still (e.g. Lakers with GP and Malone in '04 and Gasol in '08), it just never happened.
