View Full Version : Tony Parker's Defense

Either Chris Paul just happens to be more injured whenever TP is on him or Tony Parker just had one of the best defensive game of his career.

Either way, nice going :tu

CP3 is not 100% but he already went crazy in that kind of circumstances, you have to give tp credit for keeping him in check. oh and he scored when tp was not defending him

tp played good D also in game 1

True. Although he was able to revert to at least Grizzlies-series-level CP3 when anyone else tried to defend him tonight. When TP was on him, CP3 looked like Beno with a tan, tbh.

IMO, a top five all time game from Parker.

Green deserves some props as well.

Also, in the regular season, Chris Paul shot 29% per 36 minutes when Parker was on the court. In game 1, Paul was held to 27% when Parker was the floor.

I'm in the "Paul is injured" camp, but still, way to step on his neck.

Game 3 will be interesting, because no doubt CP3 will be in full wounded/cornered-animal mode.

Settle down. He wouldn't be a HOFer if this was one of the top five games of his career. Parker's had scores and scores of great games. He's probably had 10-15 better games just this regular season, even when factor in the difference in importance between regular season and playoffs.

He was fantastic defensively, I'll give him that. If you want to say it was one of his top 5 from that end of the floor, that'd be debatable.

The Clippers are where the Spurs have been in the past few years; their important guys with nagging injuries or just out.

It's amazing they got past Memphis. If they are healthy next year, there's are going to be trouble.

Tony is just plain better then Chris Paul. He dominated him when he was in New Orleans and it wont change in LA.

Who was it that I was arguing with a while back that didn't believe me that Pop sits players at the start of the second half when they have three fouls? Same thing happened to Splitter in those two games he started against the Lakers and some Spurs fans thought that Pop benched Splitter in the second half for poor play ... when it was actually just foul trouble.

Paul isn't at 100% but Parker played some damn good defense too.

In the post game conference, Pop mentioned again that Parker improvement started with what he did with the FNT last summer. Defense is too a part of this improvement. TP put a lot of effort on the defensive end last summer.

That was what TP said last summer:
"I've never played more defense in my life than this summer. I'm doing some full court defense. I want to lead the team by the example. When the PG plays some hard defense, it encourages everybody to do the same. Saying that, Pop will tease when I will be back in SA. It will gives him some ides. I'm going to be in deep shit! Anyway, if we want to win with the FNT, we had to play defense like dogs. We have no margin and it starts with me at the top."

Add to that what Parker said before the playoffs "we are going nowhere without a good defense" and it explains Parker's good defense. He has really turned up his defensive intensity for the playoffs. It started against Devin Harris and it continues against a hobbled CP3.

This is very true. The shutdown of CP3 and Harris (with the exception of one game) must be applauded.

I am not a Tony's homer. I am just a realist.

No Spurs plays better than Tony this season.

I love Manu just as much but his time has more or less passed. I am just facing the facts :)

His injury played a part, but I think Tony smelled blood and just was relentless. You don't think its in Chris's head a little and Tony knows. I love this TP. Always been a fan and defended him, but its great to see him fully believe in himself.

gtfo here, this playoffs the bench has bailed him out, let alone superb performances when certain players step up while our big 3 struggling to get their game going....only duncan has been constant this playoffs...

I never really understood why Parker is often considered a below average defender while some rather mundane guys (Bryant, Westbrook) get touted for their D.

True that. Parker is playing with as much energy as a Memphis Grizzly circa last season and CP3's gait is all screwed up, I was at the game and he had trouble just walking normally :wow

In game 1, Paul was more productive when defended by Parker, less when defended by Leonard and much less when defended by Green.

In game 2, it was the other way around - more productive with Green, less with Parker.

It's completely random, it's just Paul who can't attack consistently.

If Paul was healthy, he'd be eaten all of them alive.

I think part of why some felt there was some uncertainty was we didn't know if Pop had fully embraced playing Splitter and TD together. Now it seems he has no problem with that.

Chris Paul scored just 10 points and had eight turnovers in Game 2 against the San Antonio Spurs and Manu Ginobili says it was all about Tony Parker's defense.

"Tony set the tone," Ginobili said. "It was very aggressive and always in front of him, not getting screened. When he plays that kind of defense, he's really contagious. He makes us all better. He was fantastic."

Parker of course said it was a team effort.

"I'm trying to just do my best, to contain him and make him take hard shots," Parker said. "It's not just me, it's team defense and it's everybody being focused on Chris and making sure he doesn't get going."

Parker was outstanding, however it doesn't help that Paul is dealing with some lingering injuries. The Clippers and Spurs play on Saturday and Sunday in Los Angeles and that won't help Paul.
