View Full Version : Two retarded self-comforting NBA playoff cliches that need to go.

1: "All they did was hold home court. The series doesn't start until the road team wins a game."

Dumbshit fans often say that in an effort to convince themselves they still have a great chance at winning the series from a 2-0 deficit. The frequency with which this phrase is thrown around by media and fans alike implies that teams often comeback in this situation. No. They don't. Teams who go up 2-0 with the series 94 percent of the time.

2: "Anything can happen in game 7."

Same self-delusion applies as above when fans say this. What really happens is the home team wins game 7 over 80 percent of the time.

If you find yourself using these phrases (ex: cobbler) slap yourself and stop immediately.

This - superb thread (a doctor who has worked with those with lower IQs don't usually like the word retarded but in this vein fully appropriate and deserved!)

Also it is one thing for a team with either a history of great playoff sucess, i.e., the LAL except when down 0-2 or if they lost plausibly two very close games to perhaps state this but otherwise it is not only lame, it is farcifial as far at the probability of it ever happening.

Than again some team, some time will come back 0-3 but it surely will be neither the Clippers (especially!) or the LAL if either fall in the 3rd game!

As far as game 7 again a team like SAS or LAL or even the Mav/Celtics who have won recent or relatively titles with some of the same core might actually shift the true chance of an "upset" on the road due to the pressure on all teams but especially, those with less experience BUT NOT BY MUCH.

There is a reason Vegas surely wins these bet against the trend series or game bets over the time - they know the odds!

It's funny because I find the players themselves saying shit like that

"They did their job at home, now it's time for us to do ours."

Just trying to find some confidence among the despair.

I'm surprised by this number, I thought it'd be lower.

What's the winning % of teams with HCA?

I did a little digging on #2 and found out that only six teams have won Game 7's on the road in the last 30 years.

1982 Sixers (ECF vs Boston, lost to LA in the Finals)
2002 Lakers (WCF vs Sacramento, won the title)
2005 Pacers (EC 1st Round vs Boston, lost to Detroit in the East Semis)
2006 Mavericks (WCSF vs San Antonio, lost to Miami in the Finals)
2007 Jazz (WC 1st Round vs Houtson, lost to San Antonio in the WCF)
2009 Magic (WCSF vs Boston, lost to LA in the Finals)

Good thread. I was thinking exactly the same thing (mostly about your #1) the other day.

Anytime I see someone spout this nonsenese: "All they did was hold home court. The series doesn't start until the road team wins a game" I immediately know to ignore them because a shit basketball take will inevitably follow.

Well, make that 5 with the 2012 Clippers @ Memphis.

2005 Heat lost to Detroit at home in the ECF. 2008 Hornets lost to Spurs.

I finally have read through the list properly for the last 30 years :lol

1982 Sixers
1995 Rockets
1995 Pacers
2000 Knicks
2002 Lakers
2005 Pacers
2005 Pistons
2006 Mavs
2007 Jazz
2008 Spurs
2009 Magic
2012 Clippers

I think that was just 2007. In 04 they got throttled by LA. In 2005, they lost a 2-0 lead to Dallas. I don't think they made the playoffs in 2006. They lost a Game 7 at home in 2007. They met again in 2008 but the Jizz had HCA that time.

Is choking a misconception ?

Sometimes. Yes. If a player drops 50 points on 20 of 25 shooting and goes 10-11 from the line, but missed the game tying FT late in the 4th, only an idiot would say he choked.

2009 Magic (WCSF vs Boston, lost to LA in the Finals)

That loss shocked the shit out of me, tbh. I would've bet the house on Boston winning that game if I were a betting man. (Thankfully, I'm not.)
