The war mobilization helped to "modernize" so many facets of American life. San Antonio's history never ceases to amaze me, good find!

Way back in the day there was a similiar region in New Orleans. Since it was in the black part of town the cops left it alone. Stabbings, muggings, people getting blown away was just them N....... no big deal!

Louis Armstrong talks about that situation in his book...SATCHMO.

although its wiki, it said that in the sporting district there were no race barriers. There were as many black customers as white.
I watch the wire season about this and wonder if we'll ever get common sense to bring this kind of thing back. For me, the gambling, I would like to see in San Antonio.
