View Full Version : Why oh why do we get Marv Albert???

As a Spurs fan in Dallas I have to watch the game on TNT and I see we are stuck with Marv Albert, a guy whos "use by" date has long since expired. Albert is horrible now and almost as bad as Fratello. I saw SJ talking with Hubie Brown on the side before the game (who does he do the game for?), I sure wish he was doing TNT, he may be older but he's about the best in the business.

Hubie & Wilbon do the commentary for ESPN Radio.

Hubie still calls games but for ABC/ESPN. TNT gets the West this year, which is why we won't see Hubie anytime soon either. Also, it is interesting to note that the Spurs weren't even slated to have a game on ABC this year (I know un-freakin-believable!).

http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2011-articles/december/2011-2012-espnabc-nba-schedule.html

I don't remember if they added a game at the end of the season vs Lakers/Clippers but I do believe we finally had an ABC game.

Also interestingly enough and related:

Marv Albert's great tbh. Then again he also thinks the Duncan era Spurs have been the best professional sports organization around :hat :flag: Marv looked genuinely excited and entertained by last night's game and the broadcast team all agree they're looking forward to the rest of the series, fwiw

Wilbon on the other hand sounds like a realgm forum poster.

Hubie's not bad but father time has caught up to his commentating in the past couple of years. Dude sounds like a broken record and gets players names wrongs like he was Dick Stockton

You couldn't be more wrong. Albert, Brown, and Fratello are the best in the business.

Marv Albert is my favourite commentator

Dead wrong. TNT's Albert and Harlan are definitely the best in the business. They both convey genuine excitement when doing games and make games that much more fun to watch because of that enthusiasm. It's Tirico who's terrible. Breen's not bad though.

Same as it's always been. Breen, Van Gundy, and sideline bitch.

I Beg to differ, I thought Marv called a great game adding the appropriate amount of excitement .

Marv is not that bad.

You people complain either way. Dont like Reggie, dont like Shaq, dont like Webber, dont like Marv, dont like Harlan. Watch the game on mute or stfu seriously.

Costas can speak the language. He does his homework, love him for sports.

Albert's voice, there is something about it that I like. But he is a biter of big women butt and wears headgear.

Personally I like Kerr. Even though he caters to the moment a bit too much.

Albert's voice is velvet, one of the best in the business. I like this WCF crew right now. It is definitely better than the Finals crew. Van Gundy? Seriously? He was awesome when paired with Mark Jackson for the last few years but now it is just him and Breen and they have lost their magic. Also, during ESPN's telecasts it is hard to hear the commentators, TNT's commentators are much easier to hear.

Marv is light years better than the simpering geek Mike Breen who we will be stuck with in the Finals.

I like Kerr also, Reggie isn't too good but at least he isn't spewing nonsense like Chris Webber.

Heh...I do miss all the "Jacksonisms"...

"He's a knock down shooter, knocking down shots"

Yeah. I did not grow up listening/watching him do the sports broadcasts like you guys did in the US. I think he did the olympic broadcasts for US networks, right?

But watching him for the first time, in the late 1990's, I saw that he was more of an all around, diligent student of all sports, kind of broadcaster, and not a pure basketball guy.

My favourites were Marv, Hubie, Doug Collins during that time.

You must be just a young kid... Marv Albert has been the best in the business for a couple of decades.

He's like the Michael Jordan of commentating. You probably didn't even get a chance to see Michael Jordan on tv when he won any of his championships cuz you were probably still in diapers, so you wouldn't even be able to appreciate this comparison...

Costas did play by play for the Spirits of St. Louis. He might have become a baseball guy, but he started off doing hoops.

Marv Albert - member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, he is commonly referred to as "the voice of basketball." From 1967–2004, he was also known as "the voice of the New York Knicks."

Marv and Kerr are good; Miller bad.

Miller completely Kerr's "small bird in Harden's beard" joke. It was funny when Kerr said it, then Miller decided to repeat it 5 times. Honestly, I don't see the point of these 3 man lineups. Why not just a play-by-play guy and a color guy.

The fact that he likes to dress in woman's lingerie and bite ugly women in the ass when he isn't calling games is weird certainly, but doesn't affect his ability to call a game! :toast

Marv Albert's the best, hands down. Come on, when I think Michael Jordan and the Finals, I also think Marv Albert.

But Kevin Harlan is damn good too. Mike Breen is good too. Van Gundy is funny with Breen, but yeah, he was better with Jackson in there. I like Kerr as well. Miller needs to go though.

Marv is the best in the business, tbh..he's unbiased, he has a great voice, he provides enough enthusiasm without going over the top..

Harlan is good, too..they should get Ian Eagle for more games, as well..

Breen is good, but he's too opinionated for a play-by-play guy IMO..

Reggie Miller is atrocious..

reading all the posts above it seems clear most people approve of Marv Albert. I like him too. I just wish that at least for one time he would remove his toupee, I'm curious to see what lies underneath. Big ups to Steve Kerr too he compliments Marv well.

TNT is so much better overall than the ABC-ESPN group...I dig Ernie and the guys and they blow away the ABC-ESPN lame postgame show. Michael Wilbon? Jon Barry? Please, I would rather see Erin Barry.

Jon Barry is the scum of the basketball community. Whoever decided that guy belonged on TV should be shot.

Magic, while he has difficulty with elementary-level grammar, knows the game. Barry is a pompous douche, nothing more

Jon Barry is hands down the worst analyst.. he's too emotional and big headed and just a dick long story short. he never does in game commentary but it's worth throwing out there anyway. Also Chris Broussard, I guess he has connection or w/e but I don't usually agree with his analysis.

Marv is good, I like Kevin harlan and JVG as well. Breen is okay but he's a play by play voice, and that's really what he should stick to tbh..

Craig Sager was walking around wearing a a OKC blue jacket at game one. The spurs fans were giving him hell about the jacket color before the game. I was at the game so I didn't see the interview he had with POP at the end of the 3rd quarter. He must of though he did O.K. with POP because he walked over by Marv and Steve at mid-court and they high five him.

I don't miss him one iota. He really didn't bring much insight into his commentary.
