View Full Version : A&M driving up the value of the SEC!

”....The network [CBS] has balked at paying any type of significant increase, sources say, arguing that the addition of Missouri and Texas A&M does not change its deal.

CBS’s deal with the SEC, negotiated in 2008, pays an average of $55 million a year to the SEC over 15 years. A prorated increase would take the value of that deal up to $65 million a year. The SEC could generate additional revenue by adding more years on the end of the contract.

CBS still will carry the same number of football games each season as part of its package, and network executives are arguing that schools such as Alabama, Florida and LSU—not Missouri and Texas A&M—drive the value of the conference. Without additional inventory, CBS’s stance has been that it shouldn’t pay more solely because the conference added two new schools..........”

serious question, how much is A&M due to make this coming year by being in the SEC?

CBS isn't going to say 'A&M and Missouri add great value' when that would only mean they have to pay more in the contract. Of course they're going to say we add little or nothing.

It will depend on the new contract, but last year SEC schools made a little over $18 million per school. I would expect the per-school revenue to exceed the new Big 12 numbers (it's the SEC). There's also 'Project X' in the works (an SEC network) that will happen sooner or later and add more revenue.

Just my opinion. Last season the SEC made about 20.1 last year. When CBS and them renegotiate the TV rights then it will only go up.

Andy Staples ‏@Andy_Staples

The SEC made $116.6 million from football television last year. Total revenue was $241.5 million ($20.1 mil per school).

The Big 10 made about 24.6 mil/yr per school last year because of their widely successful conference network. The SEC is close to launching their network so I put the figure in the same ballpark although it could even be more.

Missouri and A&M joining will have the biggest impact once the SEC launches their network which will be huge.

Here's this for whoever is interested as well.

College Football Viewership according to Nielsen (Released 27 Feb 2012):
1. SEC – 4,447,000
2. Big Ten – 3,267,000
3. ACC – 2,650,000
4. Big 12 – 2,347,000
5. Pac-12 – 2,108,000
6. Big East – 1,884,000

College Basketball Viewership according to Nielsen (Released 27 Feb 2012):
1. Big Ten – 1,496,000
2. ACC – 1,247,000
3. SEC – 1,222,000
4. Big 12 – 1,069,000
5. Big East – 1,049,000
6. Pac-12 – 783,000

For the SEC, CBS is not the money maker. It is 'over-the-air' programming, not Sat/Cable subscribers. Right now it is worth $4.98M/yr/tm for a 12 team league. I expect the new number (under negotiation right now) to be $5M/yr/tm for the 14 team league.

ESPN : The money maker. Right now it is ~$15M/yr/tm for a 12 team league. I expect the new number (under negotiation right now) to be $20M/yr/tm for the 14 team league.

SEC Network : The potential HUGE money maker. This is where adding Texas and Missouri TV markets matter. B1G Network distributed $8.2M/tm last year.....and that number has grown steadily every year since 2007 (the first year of the B1G Network).

If the B1G makes 8.2/per team on their network I don't see how the SEC won't at least be making 10/per team on their network (going by viewership)

So tbh I would actually put the figure close to 30 mil/yr per school once it's all said and done.

If CBS has the statistical data to back their claim then they have a very good leg to stand on. The SEC has nothing really to show since there is currently no history to prove what kind of TV rating the two new schools would bring in. It's not like aggsy and tigers have been playing an SEC schedule and has solid numbers to prove they add TV sets.

How many times have aggsy had zero TV coverage? A lot more than I can count. You don't sell out your stadium, except when Texas comes, and the shine of being new in the SEC is going to ware off quick after the beat downs begin. No one wants to attend games where they know a slaughter is going to take place. This is especially true when we are talking about driving in 60= miles just to see the game. There are better ways to spend your money.

Potentially. While I think it's a given that the superconferences are coming I don't think it's a given that the Big 12 will be one of them. They might, but it's not a given.

Even if they do become a superconference, that doesn't automatically guarantee that the Big12 is going to be able to secure SEC type television money.

It's a guarantee that UT, OK and Okie St will be in a super conference.
I can almost guarantee that Tech and Baylor will be there as well.
I would think TCU would now get in also.

Since UT and these other schools haven't done it by now, I highly doubt they will ever join the Pac, the Big 10 or the SEC.........therefore it stands for me to reason they are fully committed to the Big 12 for the long haul.

And frankly, the Big XII is sitting in a rather favorable spot at the moment.

If they somehow end up adding Florida St, Miami and Clemson, I'll be sure to bump the aggy smiley faces in this thread.

The money would have to be comparable if there are only 4-5 super conferences.

Texas definitely.

OU is one notch below definitely since there is a scenario that they could get screwed in. That being Texas giving up on the B12 to make a B1G move. B1G won't take OU over academics, so OU's picture gets pretty hazy in that scenario. Not very likely to happen IMO, but still a possibility.

Okie State and Tech should be in pretty good shape as little brother programs.

Baylor and TCU's only hope to be in a superconference is the Big 12 becoming one.

Since UT and these other schools haven't done it by now, I highly doubt they will ever join the Pac, the Big 10 or the SEC.........therefore it stands for me to reason they are fully committed to the Big 12 for the long haul.

Disagree. First off, we can ignore the other schools not having done anything. Any B12 school that could make their own decision to leave already has. All that's left in the B12 is Texas, who can do whatever they want, and a bunch of schools that the other major conferences either have no interest in whatsoever or would only consider as part of a package deal to land Texas.

Texas' current commitment to the Big 12 is limited to the 6 years that they signed over their TV rights. After those 6 years they'll look at all their options, B12 and otherwise.

And frankly, the Big XII is sitting in a rather favorable spot at the moment.

At the moment, yes.

To be answered later in this post.....

So you disagree about UT?

There is no way they go to a new conference all their own.

Where would you get the idea that they would?

Do I disagree that Texas has already decided that they want to be in the Big 12 forever and ever? Yes. If Texas thinks it's in their best interests to move elsewhere, I have no doubts that they'll move elsewhere. If it's in their best interests to bring someone with them, they will. If it's not, they won't.

Adding those Florida schools with their history and TV markets would absolutely put them at or near the top money wise.

only a fool would laugh at that notion.

If you just look at 1st and 2nd tier TV contracts, maybe. But conference networks are becoming as big a money maker as the 1st & 2nd tier deals are, and so long as the LHN exists, there's not going to be a B12 conference network regardless of who the conference adds.

Even looking at just the 1st and 2nd tier deals you've got to consider the domino effect of the big 12 raiding the ACC. If the ACC loses FSU/Miami/Clemson, that just opens the door for the SEC to get into North Carolina and Virginia.

The schools in the conference have the market and the ratings.

Right. And when comparing two conferences the one with the larger market and higher ratings will get the bigger deal, regardless of whether or not both are considered to be superconferences.

You're being ridiculous now in trying to justify your earlier lol.

The deal is expected to be the one reported by CBSSports.com on March 13 worth a combined $2.6 billion with ESPN and Fox. The 13-year deal is projected to be worth $200 million annually to the conference (an average of $20 million per school) through 2025. For the moment, the Big 12 enters the stratosphere of the Pac-12, SEC and Big Ten, all of which are near or above the $200 million per year mark.

Personally I think the success or failure of the LHN determines what happens next. LHN succeeds, I think Texas remains content with the Big 12 and the conference survives. LHN fails, I think six years from now Texas tells OU, OkSt and Tech to pack their shit and moves to the Pac.

The money maker is the SEC network which will be a monster. It will blow the B1G network out of the water (which is already a great conference network). The big12 won't have a network that compares to this(and that is where the big $$$ comes from, it doesn't come from ESPN or CBS), especially with the longhorns having their own and calling the shots. If the big12 can get the longhorn network to eventually go away and create a big12 network then they too can make a good dollar on it. Good luck bringing that idea to Dodds though.

SEC network has a much bigger up hill battle than the Big 12 does when it comes ot a 3rd tier network. Right now Bama and Florida have their own 3rd tier agreements that is neeting them much more money than an SEC network can make. Getting those two schools to buy off on that is a huge up hill battle. Especially in the short term where there is sure to be a loss for years one and two. That will be a big hit on the bottom line for two schools making about 10 mil a piece for their 3rd tier rights.

I Disagree.Depends on the new playoff structure. If strength of schedule is a main criterion, it makes sense for UT to make concessions to keep and attract more strong conference competition, just as the BCS structure made it sensible for UT to make its own network in a watered down conference.

The playoff scheme is the type of thing that will make UT act. If they can make a strong conference network with less of the socialistic aspects of the other conference agreements, there's really no way they wouldn't do it.

Choosing between California/Texas/Arizona/Oregon/Washington/Colorado/Utah/Oklahoma or Texas/Oklahoma/Kansas/Iowa/West Virginia isn't a very tough decision to make. Even if you do lump Florida and South Carolina in there, the scale still tilts heavily towards the Pac.

Says you. And you're not a TV exec.

Someone living in New York seems a lot less likely to be watching Cal/Okie St at midnight than say OkSt/W Virginia at an earlier time.

What's for Texas not to like? They get paid by ESPN regardless of whether anyone can see the LHN or not.

Texas likes the cash to be sure but if they knew that A&M would get butthurt about it and leave, would they still go through with it?

I'm not so sure.

I also know Mack Brown has griped about the extra work he has taken on because of the network.

wrong again aggsy boy, check your facts both have their tier 3 rights tied to networks that are paying them about 10 mil each.

Absolutely wrong that Alabama and Florida would stand to make more from monetizing their own 3rd tier rights than by bundling in an SEC network..

Sure there are obstacles relative to other SEC schools' independent rights deals, but those are contractual obstacles.

You have no idea what kind of money is being talked about by giving up those 3rd tier rights.

For Texas, if it gets going as is expected by both ESPN and UT, the money involved makes the initial 15 million per year chump change. We are talking 40 to 50 million per year. Texas is all for the Big 12 network but that is because they don't want a cut, what they want is the rights to show Big 12 games from their stadium and arena on the LHN and let their away games go to the Big 12 network.

The strength of having your own network will trump any team such as Florida, Alabama and Oklahoma from ever giving up their 3rd tier rights. It is also going to be a driving factor in Notre Dame not joining the B1G.

Will an SEC network make lots of money, absolutely. Will it benefit aggsy, absolutely. But the money still must be divided up among 14 schools. For Florida and Bama to break even, the network payout will need to be 280 million in profit the first two years. Not even the B1G network has come close to that even to this point.

The true value of the SEC network, Big 12 network, and the B1G network is that it gives a little extra to the shit stains of each conference. Like Aggsy.

The real schools such as Texas, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Bama, FSU and Florida stand to make a hell of a lot more off starting their own network or cutting their own deal with a regional network like Fox or Sunshine.

the three schools that are totally screwed in all of this are USC, Ohio State, and Michigan. They are screwed out of their share of the pie, and don't be surprised to see USC start looking and thinking about joining a new conference. Simply put, they have more media pull than Texas does.

Think what you want, but if there is no conference affiliation then there is a strong chance greed will prevail and lots of teams are going to look out for their bottom line to include the idea that they can go independent or join conferences that will maximize their earning potential.

coyotes_geek

Or in 15 years time, other members of the conference are able to get their own networks going.

If the market of Texas fans isn't big enough to support a network there's certainly not any chance of any other big 12 school being able to get one.

I seriously doubt though that the LHN is the same 15 years from now as it is today.

Agreed.

UT has a pretty big national market.

There is a good reason ESPN wanted to give them their own network for 20 years.

Well, there was a reason. The jury is still out on whether or not it was a good one. Right now, ESPN is losing big time on the LHN.

I think you are over valuing the SEC and under valuing the Big 12

Fair enough.

UT wasn't the biggest brand in college sports in 1996

They were still the biggest school with the biggest following and the most financial resources in the region.

And the big12 deals won't be going up?

They will. They just won't be as big as the deals the SEC gets.

Geography is actually a big reason why they won't leave to the B1G.

Probably right. I just don't see the B1G as an impossibility.

Says you. And you're not a TV exec.

Neither are you.

ESPN obviously is asking too much for the LHN or else it would be a no brainer for companies like ATT and Time Warner to add it.

If I can get the BYU Network, (and right now I have it without asking for it) it's definitely not out of the question for other schools.

Well, there was a reason. The jury is still out on whether or not it was a good one. Right now, ESPN is losing big time on the LHN.

Good reason =/= good gamble

They will. They just won't be as big as the deals the SEC gets.

No reason at this point to think (in 15 years) that their money won't be comparable.

As for San Francisco, I asked Ray Ratto of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Ray, does the East Coast Bias really exist?

"There can be no question," Ray said. "Ignoring the obvious curvature-of-the-earth and time zone issues, I refer you to the Ken Burns baseball epic, in which the entire history of the game is told through the evil prisms of New York and Boston, and through the satanic vision of Doris Kearns Goodwin."

"Sounds bad," I said. "What can be done about it?"

"The solution, of course, is to make the earth turn backward," Ray said. "Unless de-population of the entire nation east of St. Louis would work betterA third option --to make people in our business stay up late once in a while to watch a game that might happen to end after midnight -- is clearly not feasible."

http://espn.go.com/page2/s/neel/030825.html

Point there being the time zone issue.

I think the prime time match ups are the bigger keys to ratings and contracts.

Not too many ”must see” games at 11am.

The Pac-12’s deal with ESPN and Fox for $250 million a year over 12 years—agreed to last year—has been a game-changer for conferences that have expanded and gone back to the negotiating table

The ACC and ESPN just signed off on a new agreement that took their one-year-old contract from an average of $155 million annually to $240 million, while adding four years and granting the network more games and marketing rights.

If the Big 12 can't even keep up with the ACC there's no reason to think they'll be able to keep up with the SEC, especially once the SEC gets their network going.

You're right. I didn't see Pitt or Syracuse mentioned in that sportingnews story so I assumed they weren't included and divided by 12 instead of 14. Incorrect assumption on my part.

The restructured contract, which binds the ACC and ESPN through the 2026-27 sports season, will go into effect on July 1 and is worth $3.6 billion, according to a source with knowledge of the financial details of the agreement.

Once Pitt and Syracuse become official members of the ACC, each of the league’s 14 teams will receive $17.1 million in TV revenue from the conference.

After a certain point, all that money doesn't even mean that much in terms of actually winning. Texas has been the NCAA's biggest cash cow the last two years, and look where that's gotten them. The first thing these athletic admins do with that money is pay themselves and generally overpay their coaches. I don't see why the casual fan would want to obsess over that.

And now that I think about it, Aggies probably should care because they're in a shit load of debt, and paying off Sherman and the Big XII didn't help that.
