View Full Version : Will Bonner finally be put to rest

as soon as he checks in OKC gets consecutive dunks and his men gets offense rebounds
he provides nothing offensively then gets killed defensively
all i remember from bonner this series is jumping away when kevin durant went for a dunk
blairs impact was immediate and hes an okc killer
floor spacing is overrated and blair can finish in traffic and get rebounds
he also sets good picks with his girth

Yes, we get it. Bonner has never helped win a playoff series.
No, he will not be put to rest, because as great of a Coach Pop is, he is one stubborn son of a bitch.

Bonner played 2:10 minutes tonight
Sure his -8 is fucking awesome in that time but he's not the reason why we lost.
I can live with him playing only 2 minutes every game tbh. If he doesn't play it would be better but....
About +/- Leonard was the worst of the team with -12 when he was clearly our best player on the court. I don't care about +/- shit
Pop will try to use him in game 5. If he actually take a shot, and somehow he`d make it, he`ll stay in the game

As God awful as Bonner is, Pop loves him for some reason. They're good fiends of the court, go golfing together a lot. So Pop thinks he owes it to him. Dumb but it is what it is.

I hope to fuckin God that he isn't even allowed to put on a jersey for Game 5.
He should sit in the bleachers because hes had the same impact on this series as your casual fan.
If I were him, I'd be ashamed to stand in front of my teammates after choking so many times. Absolutely ashamed.
If you'v cheered for him before as a Spur fan then you're probably a loser who was picked on throughout your life. The fact is that losers are losers because they have loser tendencies that they can't shake.
Bonner's a loser and you're a loser if you defend him. Simple. My condolences.

nobody really gives a f*** about one game +/- ...its just a fun stat to bring up to make fun of the stat itself.
but its not like Bonner didnt kill any momentum today.
stop the Bonner hating!...it was fun to see him in the regular season...he just shouldn't be used in any meaningfull minutes in the playoffs....thats just his nature and thats ok (who wants to win playoff games anyway?).

Pop for some stupid reason loves Bonner but after today I think he's done.
In 2 minutes he passed a open shot to dribble and shot a more difficult one, lost 2 rebounds, failed to run in the transition defense and late on a rotation on Collison.
Pop love for him can't be that strong

Bonner isn't the reason the Spurs lost. That's true. The problem is the fact that he's on this team to begin with. He's taking the place of a real frontline player - any frontline player - who could do what is usually expected from NBA bigs. Score some in the post, rebound, set screens, block an occasional shot or two and play solid positional defense.
The Spurs lost this game largely because they could not get stops - and the OKC bigs wiped the floor with the Spurs. With Bonner on the roster, the Spurs are essentially playing with 4 bigs. He sucks, Spiltter is sucking and Duncan is ineffective. So where does that leave the Spurs frontline?
If this game - and this series - doesn't serve as yet ANOTHER glaring indicator as to how deficient the Spurs are along their frontline - then the FO and coaching staff are never going to get it. I thought the message was loud and clear after the Memphis series of last year. How many more reminders does the coaching staff and front office need?

I just saw a highlight where Perkins literally ran by Bonner, beat him down the floor for a dunk. Again I know he only played 2 minutes, but that's not the point. He doesn't belong as part of a championship rotation. Hell, he shouldn't be on the squad at all. This experiment has failed. Pop only needs to wake the hell up.

That play pissed me off so bad. He's lucky as hell to be playing for the Spurs and the chump doesn't even haul ass down the floor to prevent that momentum killer. I'm done with even giving him the benefit of the doubt.

If Spurs want to free up a roster spot, that would be the way to go. Of course, I publically questioned the wisdom of resigning his ass from the gitgo.
If today wasn't enough, then we are doomed. Bonner clearly missed a profession and is a clear testament what hard work can do, fact that this guy is an NBA player has got to be one of the most astonishing achievements of the post industrial age.

Indeed. The summer of 2010 was a headscratcher. On one hand, we found a gem in Neal and finally brought in Splitter.
OTOH, we gave Jefferson and Bonner 4 year contract extensions at expensive prices when both of them were terrible in the 2010 playoffs. Bringing them back was one thing. But FOUR seasons? That was unacceptable.

Good God, I hope that Bonner is used as trade bait come draft time. Trade him, amnesty him, whatever. He doesn't belong on this roster. His pussy style of play is true downer for this team. Bonner instills confidence - in the opposition. I sincerely hope he's played his last minutes as a Spur.

"Bonner only played two minutes"
In those two minutes, the Thunder went on a 10 - 0 run and got into a rhythm in this game
It was 19-12 when Bonner checks in with 4:04 left in first qtr..KD at the line for 2....19-14
Bonner gets pass, up-fakes, drives in lane, passes to Timmy on bassline with 8 seconds on shot clock and runs away from the play. Bad shot Timmy, Perkins beats Bonner down the floor for dunk. Pop timeout......19-16
Bonner passes on three, shoots 19 ftr....brick...OKC comes down, Bonner does not block out Ibaka for tip in.....19-18
Bonner sets horrible pick for Gino and rolls off...pass from Manu gets tipped and stolen....Manu steals ball back....runs pick and roll with Timmy....Timmy take 18 ftr and misses.....with Bonner at three point line, nobody is down low for rebound...OKC comes down...Bonner loses on D, Collison...Collison get uncontested dunk....19-20
Bonner again set worthless pick and rolls to 3 pt line...Parker desperately spins in lane for layup...misses....Kd comes down, gets fouled hits two free throws......2:01 on the clock...19-22
I won't blame the first two points on Bonner since KD was already at the line, but for those of you that think Bonner did not do any damage in "only 2 minutes", you guys are completely wrong. The Thunder were playing with no energy and were out of sync until Bonner checked in. Then they got rolling.

Bonner had about 3-4 open 3s in the first 4 games and decided to pass back on all of them. Defensively he hasn't been able to contribute either. Tonight's game Bonner played I think over just 2 mins.
Pop played Blair during garbage time of game 3 and he gave OKC problems. He gave OKC problems again tonight.
In summary, I think Bonner will not play much the rest of the series.

We lost by 6... -8 can be the difference between winning and losing...
And it's not just the point differential... there was a momentum swing there too... I'm glad the Spurs were able to recover from it, but playing catchup is always tougher.

This entire sequence is a microcosm reminder as to what happened with Bonner in the Memphis series of last year. EVery Grizzlies player got into the act of ass-raping him. From Darrell Arthur to Zach Randolph to Shane Battier. They all got a momentum boost from Bonner failing to guard them, failing to box them out and failing to match their physicality and their play. What more does this coaching staff need to see? I hope we've seen the last of him in a Spurs uniform.

Gawd I hope so. When he doesn't make shots he's worthless. And his semi-respectable improvements in defense and rebounding have vanished to the point where he's a total liability on the court.

When Bonner resigned two years ago, I was sick to my stomach because I knew what is happening to him in the playoffs right now was gonna happen as along as he is on this team because of Pops love affair with him and refusal to bench him. I swear Bonner has some dirt on Pop. What other freaking rational explanation is there?!

I was more mad at Pop for putting him in the game.. Bonner is one of the most useless players in the NBA..
He hits 3's or he adds nothing, even in hitting 3's he can't defend or rebound... I have no clue what he is doing in the NBA?? Back in the day shooters and great defenders with loads of heart and toughness like John Starks had to play in the CBA and bag groceries to get bye.. He earned a tryout with the Knicks and on pure guts made the team.. Bonner is 6'9 so he makes the NBA and 3 mil a year..
Pathetic.. He's a joke...
The worst part about Bonner's play is....he doesn't check himself into the game and give himself minutes!!!!
As much as I hate Bonner's game, he is what he is. It' really not his fault he keeps playing....it's Pops fault. He can't tell Pop no I don't want to go in the game.
Much like Splitter last year against Memphis, and before that Hill against Dallas, Pop seems to have swallowed his pride....again....finally.....and come to his senses a litter earlier to give Blair some minutes.
Blair is not the saviour of this series, but Bonner IS the grim reaper.

No you don't, because that was taken directly from ESPN and they did not copy it from you and I read your post but felt it would be convenient to see the play by play without reading it in a story like fashion.

Bonner might actually make a difference in a home game but I would keep him out of all away games.

i got a feeling were gonna see that red headed fucker at some point again in this series
Also need to consider that timeout Pop called late in the 3rd when the Spurs had momentum. He's done that before, and I've never understood it.
No you don't, because that was taken directly from ESPN and they did not copy it from you and I read your post but felt it would be convenient to see the play by play without reading it in a story like fashion.
Also Ibaka wasn't credited for the tip-in, Perkins was.
When did I say Bonner spaces the floor?
Dude, I was kidding about the TIMVP thing.
but you did say this....
Frustration on your part has nothing to do with the flow of the game. They do not serve the same role, and frustration isn't the same as a turnover.
Playoff Matty is in full effect, and he's not going to go off from outside the arc, but opponents don't seem to realize it so they close out on him. Put Blair out there and see how much double coverage Tim or Tiago has in the paint.

Like SJax said Bonner's got no business playing if he's scared.

Lets just hope he is amnestied or traded, he truly blows.
Put Blair in the starting lineup. Thats where he was for most of the season. It's not like he and the other starters will need time to adjust. Duncan Blair and Diaw should take up most of the 96 minutes available at PF/C and only put pissweak tiago and shithouse bonner in, well never.

They aren't out there on the streets man, too bad lol........ Seriously though I had faith in Splitter but he is soft as burger buns too, Atleast BLAIR PLAYS HARD as hell and tries hard! As much as some hate him in here that dude can hustle like BONNER SHOULD (I hated when some said he hustled but still sucks) and he can board inside and putback.

The Spurs finally grew weary of one pussy (RJ) and got rid of him. It's amazing that they acquired him to begin with - given his reputation around the NBA. THat said, they've had an even larger sample size of Bonner. He gets re-upped a year ago and is still rewarded with a spot in the rotation and continuous playing time.
If you're going to rid your roster of all the pussies, why stop at RJ? There are no more excuses for Bonner. There is also no reason why he should remain a Spurs after this year.
As for Blair, he does get shit on a lot, but at least the guy brings continuous hustle and effort. If the Spurs could replace Bonner with a more serviceable, athletic, young big, who can truly provide some of the skills to counter a young frontline like Perkins and Ibaka, then Blair's defiencies wouldn't be so glaring.

Spot on my man, spot on. Spurs FO needs to wake up about this frontline that still includes players like Bonner. No legit frontline has Matt Bonner in it.

Poor Blake and dumpster :depressed

I think Bonner has something on Pop that nobody knows about and Bonner is holding Pop at ransom.
Maybe Bonner walked in on Pop sharing some wine with and then shagging a 13 year old.
Bonner is blackmailing Pop to get minutes and stay with the team :stirpot:
4:03 Matt Bonner enters the game for Boris Diaw 19-13
4:03 19-14 Kevin Durant makes free throw 2 of 2

I don't want to see him anymore, but I'm afraid he's gonna be the first big off the bench in game 5, again.

Bonner once saved Pop's life, it's the only reason I can imagine he's still on this team.

He needs to stay in OKC and fly back to SA on game 6.
I know that regular season Bonner has a lot to do with the awesome record we had (and hence while we get to play games 5 & 7 of this series at home), but it really does suck that he plays this lousy in the playoffs year in and year out.
I gave him passes in recent playoff runs because I really didnt expect the team to go far, as constructed, in any event. But this year is different and our chances are better. We NEED him to step up. If he even rattles off two 3 pointers a game it draws Serge out, and changes the whole complexion of the game.
Spurs purged 2 of the three mentally soft playoff performers from last year's roster in Hill and RJ; I think this summer they need to ship out the 3rd. Hopefully Lorbek allows for that.
Oh and speaking of mentally soft, Splitter has really regressed since the Hack-a-Splitter strategy was employed. Hasnt been the same tbqh...
