Does anyone remember on Saturday nights after the 10 o'clock news in the early 80's they had this thing called Dark Theater. It was basically a scary movie being played and the Grim Reaper would come out from behind a house and sort of hosted the movie. That used to FREAK ME OUT!

Pretty sure it was after KENS-TV's 10 o'clock newscast

I haven't been back to SA in a while but last time I was there we went to some store over by the Riverwalk. Downstairs was filled with old records. The upstairs has tons of old toys and nostalgia. Speaking of Handy Andy, remember they had grocery pick-up system? As I vaguely recall, at checkout your groceries where put into some some kind of trolley or box. You got a number that corresponded to the number on the box. You then drove your car to a pick up spot and claimed your groceries with the number. I think you can see the grocery pick up area in the above photo.

I also recall that the Handy Andy in Central Park Mall was the first to open a "gourmet" area featuring imported foods and a french bread bakery.

The main things I remember are when different stores were located in places than what is there now.

I remember the HEB at Callaghan and Babcock, and the Food City at Hillcrest and Babcock.

All the stores that used to be on Bandera inside the loop-- Sears, Piggly Wiggly, Gibsons's.

The places on Fredericksburg like Kress was inside the loop and Gulf Mart (later Shopper's World) outside the loop where the Graham's is now.

I think Fed Mart was at Vance Jackson and 410 where it turned into a Target and now the Academy.

I know we all saw movies at the Wonder Theatre (Dave and Buster's); the theatre in North Star Mall; the theatre behind Central Park; and the "new" theatre inside Ingram Park Mall!

Earl Holliman's Dinner Theater

I don't know if dinner theaters exist anymore, they were kind of a 70's kitschy concept.
I went to see one show there, I guess it was a memorable experience, because I still remember the play was Arsenic and Old Lace.

The "star" was Elisha Cook Jr, (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0176879/) perhaps one of the most prolific character actors in Hollywood history. You probably don't know the name, but if you grew up in the 70's & 80's you're likely to remember the face.

I remember the gorilla as soon as you walked in the zoo. What was his name? :lol

The gorillas name was mopie (mo pee). they would let you throw those single caramel candies at him. He would catch them out of the air if it was close, unwrap them and eat them. Man times were different.

Waaay back in the days before home video, this was one of my favorite places on the planet.

I saw many classic & foreign films here, back when it was a rep/art film house. First saw all the Universal Horror movies here...Casablanca, Maltese Falcon...magic.
Nothing like seeing movies on the big screen.

Not sure about the Murfs over by the ATT Center, but I'm pretty sure the last time I went down San Pedro, I noticed that one was closed.

Murfs did have awesome burgers, fries and orange slushes but there would be months that would go by before I would go there. I would wonder to myself why it had been so long.

Then I would walk inside and instantly remember why.

When I was a kid, my mother sold arcade machines. When John Santikos opened the Galaxy theatres, I used to get stacks of free movie passes and comps for concessions that didn't have restrictions because Santikos bought all the video games from the company she worked for.

Also, they're the reason why San Antonio never had a Burger King until the 90s. Not like that's a bad thing.

LOL Chess King

for all your douche-bag accessories:

The store was a specialty clothing outlet that sold men's and women's lines of "faux-upscale" 80's designer wear. More specifically, the cheesiest, sleaziest, ugliest and most eye-searing 80's clothes you could possibly find. Velcro closures? Check. Mesh designs? Check. Excessive use of leather? Check. Odd-colored thick v-neck sweater vests? Check. Just think of any tacky 80's trend, and then spin it as "upscale." That's Chess King.

Yeah that was it. I guess it wasn't a seafood restaurant.

As far as showbiz....there was this little room that only about 4 ft high, pitch black, and there were strobe lights in there going off in there. The draw to the room was that people looked like they were moving in slow motions because the only visibility was when the strobe flashed.

There would never.....NEVER be a room like anymore that for kids with all the epilepsy out there. There is to much risk. Maybe that's why they shut it down in the first place.
