Depending on who ends up leaving out of our front line, I'd consider getting him back at the vet min.

If we got rid of Blair in some sort of trade, Ian might fill his 5th big spot quite nicely. He's got a bunch of traits that our bigs currently are short on: not undersized, athletic, fast, long. He's also got experience in our system, so he'd be able to contribute quicker, with a lower learning curve.

Yeah, he hasn't solved his long-standing issue of excessive fouling, but he does possess a lot of traits that this club could use. He's got size, athleticism and length. He's also got good hands, a nice touch around the rim and can hit his free throws. The additional experience that he's gotten since leaving the Spurs has served him well. I think he'd be worth a possible look.

Would help to increase the athleticism and length of the front court.

He's still a hacker so he doesn't fit into the "don't foul" game plan.

Rodrigue Beaubois and Ian Mahinmi won't play for French NT

Ian is definitely intriguing.. he can potentially help in quite a few areas. Big who can shoot that 15 footer, capable rebounder, good hands, athletic and long, etc.

Ofcousre, he still has some issues, so by no means would he be the answer. But IMO hes a capable contributor.

Not sure Pop likes this kid at all so the chances of him coming back are slim to none.

Even if we wanted to sign Ian he'd never come here. Not after how we treated him here, glued the fucker to the bench and didnt give him a chance even when he was healthy. Athletic big man we could have developed, but didn't. Not good.

And people think Splitter doesn't get enough playing time...

If Mahinmi's agent even passed along an offer by the Spurs, he'd be fired on the spot.

How come everyone loves Ian's 5.8/4.7 and hates Blair's 9.5/5.5?

Same reason Thabeet got picked so high, I think -- people fall in love with upside.

It probably doesn't hurt that dramatic blocks are the post-defense equivalent of slam dunks despite being far less statistically relevant than humble rebounding or footwork/spacing skills. Why else would people salivate over Pops M-B the way they did?

That said, DeJuan is the author of the only truly television-worthy rebound I've ever seen.

per 36 minutes, the rebounding is basically a draw, 9.3 to 9.1 in Blair's favor, the scoring is 16.1 to 11.2 in Blair's favor, but Blair's usage rate is 21.7% vs Mahinmi's 14.4%. The true shooting percentage is .585 for Ian vs .549 for Blair.
Ian uses less possessions when he's on the floor, but he's more efficient. He's got better defensive matchups in most cases. He's also a much better paint protector and help defender due to height...
Do we want our 5th big to be a guy who needs possessions or a guy who will scrape by without?

The Spurs place a strong emphasis on not fouling and communicating on defense. Ian has had some highlight blocks, but gets out of position easily and fouls. Seemed to improve somewhat last year.

Lovely. Now factor in how his fouling rate determines his usage rate.

This. To protect the rim, you must actually be on the floor.

According to a league source, Mahinmi has a top three wish list among the the seven teams interested. Years and dollars will be discussed over the next couple of days. Asked if his time in Dallas has come to an end, the source said, "Yeah, I guess so."
