This guy is everything the Spurs want Bonner to be-- a stretch 4 who is a serious 3 pt threat & a very good rebounder. Some estimates have put his asking price at 8 mil a year, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone offered more. I hope the Spurs explore every option possible to land him, including sign & trades. The Bucks are one team that might actually be interested in a guy like Splitter and if they think they're going to lose Ilyasova anyway, might be interested in a Splitter & Bonner combo plus other parts or future draft picks in exchange for him and a young project big like Larry Sanders or Ekpe Udoh. Outside chance at best, but definitely worth a try.

I can see the Bucks at least listen to such a S&T offer.
and I do like Ilyasova. but would it be a good idea to bring in him and bring back Diaw? and therefore sacrifice Splitter? that's to much of downsizing, especially as we don't know how many minutes Tim can take next season.

Have to agree. Earlier this year he said that he would go wherever paid him the most. Chances are that won't be the Spurs. And the sign and trade offers we could put forth could be easily matched by half the league, unless they were really high on Splitter.

Characterizing Ilyasova as a jump shooting big is inaccurate in my opinion. Compare his shot selection with those of other successful three point shooters:
Stephen Curry
Total shot attempts: 296
Shots attempted from 3 pt territory: 121
Shots attempted from 2 pt territory: 175
Ray Allen
Total shot attempts: 493
Shots attempted from 3: 234
shots attempted from 2: 259
Matt Bonner
Total shot attempts: 350
from 3: 250
from 2: 100
Ilyasova
Total attempts: 597
from 3: 112
from 2: 485
If you look at Ilyasova's numbers, you see that about 19% of his shots are from 3 pt range. Bonner is a huge contrast to Ilyasova: about 71% of his shots are threes. Of Ilyasova's 485 attempts from 2 point land, 241 were at the rim where he converted 148 for a 61.4% fg percentage at that range. In terms of attempts, this translates to Ilyasova attacking the rim on 40% of his shots and shooting threes 19% of the time.

If Duncan is ready to take a paycut for his new contract, Ilyasova isn't that much of a reach.
The following scenario is CBA compliant:
- Mills opt out.
- Spurs don't do a QO to Green but keep their early bird rights on him.
- Byars is cut.
- Bonner is amnestied.
- Blair and Joseph are salary dumped. Cash can even be included if needed.
- Spurs re-sign Duncan to a $15M/3 years contract.
- Spurs spend their cap-space on Ilyasova to sign him to a $31.5M/4 years contract.
- Spurs use their room exception ($5.3M/2 years) on Lorbek.
- Spurs re-sign Green with the early bird rights.
- Spurs fill the rest of the roster with min salaries.
At the end Spurs rotation would be:
Parker/Neal
Ginobili/Green
Leonard/Jackson
Ilyasova/Lorbek
Duncan/Splitter

It all hinges on what Duncan wants to do. But if I had to guess which aging star would be willing to take a pay cut for a chance at another championship, I think Duncan would be the prime candidate.
Minimum player possibilities would be guys like Dominic McGuire, Donte Greene, Sheldon Williams, Jared Jeffries, Sundiata Gaines, Hasheem Thabeet... all players with clear shortcomings of one sort or another, but all good risks for a minimum salary.

I imagine myself in his situation and after making all those millions at this point in my career I would do what ever it took to go out with another ring. As long as I new that Pop and RC were going to be able to get the players that I new would help us win a championship.
The question is how much better is he then Lobrek?
As far as contracts can you stagger the pay..1st year 3 mill/ 2nd. 7 mill/ 3rd 5 or 6mill?

we don't know how good Lorbek could be.
but Ilyasova averaged 15.5 PPG and 9.7 RPG over the last 3 months of the season. (41 games). do we see Lorbek do this? No.
Ilyasova should be a bit better on offense and significantly better on the boards. let's guess that the best case scenario for Lorbek is 10 PPG and 6 RPG, that difference in production usually is payed by 2-3 times the money. so, if Lorbek is willing to play for 3 million, the 7-8 for Ilyasova are reasonable.

I couldn't really argue if the Spurs want to go all out for Ilyasova before going with Diaw/Lorbek. Ilyasova is an aggressive player who can hit threes and rebound at the power forward position. Those are so rare that the Spurs have to be intrigued.
Hopefully we hear more . . .

a long shot but would be awesone if Spurs could somehow pull off a S&T - hard to see a scenario where Bucks wouldn't want Splitter as they have log jam at 4, but definite hole at 5 - maybe could avoid including Splitter by giving up 1st round pick - Neal would hold value to Bucks as they could use outside shooting and of course Bonner would have to be in deal to make money work
In the end if Spurs could get right additional piece back I would pull the trigger even if it meant having to give up Splitter

well the bucks have been making stupid trades
and we actually do have some decent young pieces
they could be interested in guys like splitter/green/pick
a 2014 beyond pick for us could be a lottery pick which would intrigue teams even more
ilyasova can play, definitely not a stat padder
the problem for the spurs is he said a while back that he would only play for whoever offered the most money
whether its here or overseas
i see him going to the nets most likely
he was dropping like 30/20s on the nets so they probably like his game more then most and would esaily overpay
after that i see the craptors giving him 12 mil

The pick would have to be in the 2014 draft, since CBA rules do not allow you to trade 1st round picks 2 years in a row (traded our 2012 pick to GS in the SJax trade).

I thought once you have the cap space you can't sign someone else to fill the cap space and then go back over the cap using early bird/Larry Bird exceptions? They assume if you have the cap space to sign the player then you should use it as that nullifies the need for the exceptions in the first place? I could be wrong.
EDIT: I probably explained that poorly, an example would be IF Dwight Howard was a free agent, and signed with the Nets filling the rest of their cap space without Deron Williams signed, they would have surrendered Derons bird rights as you can't sit on his bird exception and go fill that space with Howard to get you to the cap and then sign Deron over the cap?

It's all about the amount of the cap hold. In the scenario Bruno outlined, Green's small cap hold would not prevent the signings in his example. They could sign him to an amount larger than his cap hold once all other signings were complete.
Miami did that with Joel Anthony in 2010. His cap hold was around 1M. That was the amount that counted against the salary cap as they signed all the other players. Once they were done, they signed Anthony to a contract that started at more than 3M using his Bird rights.
In the Howard example you gave, Williams' cap hold is over 17M.

I am sick and tired of the Spurs drafting and wanting soft big men like Lourbek. It's about time the spurs had someone big to fill the paint as a low key presence... a big man along the lines of Kendrick Perkins, Deandre Jordan, or Tyson Chandler.
I was a huge proponent of the spurs trying to get Ronny Turiaf instead of Diaw, but it's really apparent that this is what we are lacking for a complete team.

Why? We're gonna have a pick in the 20s again. I really don't see picks mattering that much until spurs start to suck. If we could have traded a pick in a package that brought back a decent player a few years back, not many would be crying that we didn't get a shot a drafting Cory Joseph.

your right on, but the FO is slow to catch on.
Ronny Turiaf is a guy I wanted as an enforcer. I thought the Spurs should have went after him harder. Someone that could lay the wood on players when the came into the lane could have made a difference against the other Championship contenders.
In the 2008 season I said PJ Brown was the missing piece to the Championship puzzle. I thought the Spurs needed to get him to add toughness to the team so we could repeat. Turns out PJ Brown was the missing piece to Boston's Championship puzzle. Not many people thought much of him, but I thought at the start of the season the Spurs should try and get him. I can't believe he then to Boston later in the season and was huge for them in the playoffs. As good as Boston played in the regular season without his huge efforts in the playoffs they probably don't win without him. He was actually even bigger than I thought he would be.
We haven't had an enforcer since 2005 with Tony Massenburg.
Spurs need size and toughness, yet they keep getting soft bigmen.
Why are the Spurs so slow to catch on?

You have never watched Lorbek play if you think he is soft. The guy is one of the most physical bigman in Europe. He is not as tough as Chandler or Perkins but the guy is every bit as physical as Duncan, Love and most PF in the league. He isn't going to be no DPOY candidate but the guy doesn't mind being physical at all.
To be honest, I watched his highlights on youtube, and the best thing he seems to be good at is a hook shot... in which case the best case scenario we can compare him to is the likes of a Pau Gasol. There is a reason the Lakers are trying to trade Pau Gasol, because that guy is mentally and physically soft.
Now, as MUCH as I had to admit it, and I don't want to sound like a racist or anything... but if you have a huge black man as a center I can guarantee you that James Harden would think twice before flopping in the key. Like the previous posters, we do need an ENFORCER. And as I have said before, Ronny Turiaf was perfect for that role.

Oh and for the record, part of the reason the Spurs lost to OKC was because Diaw was nowhere to be found after the 2nd game. All throughout the playoffs, he did EXACTLY what the spurs needed him to do: reverse lay-ups around the paint. It was prevalent throughout the first two games against OKC. Somewhere in between the end of the second game and third game, Diaw decided it was better to keep kicking the ball out to the shooters than to have an easy reverse lay-up. Now, if, lets say it was Kendrick Perkins instead of Diaw, I can guarantee he would try to slam it in, at least getting two attempts at the ft line

Pau Gasol is the reason Kobe Bryant has 5 rings instead of 3. I would be delighted if Lorbek turned out to be half of a Pau Gasol.

Kendrick Perkins got his shit stuffed in during the finals.

after those 2 teams im not sure who else would go for him hard except the bucks

Anyone have any idea what the Nets cap situation looks like after agreeing to resign DWill? With all the other FA signings they've done, not sure they could afford Ersan (assuming he still wants to get paid)

HoopsHype
Agent Tolga Tugsavul tells HoopsHype his client Ersan Ilyasova is seriously considering accepting "a big offer" from a European club. According to Tugsavul, the free agent forward has offers on the table from another two Euro teams plus three in the NBA - Toronto, Brooklyn and Milwaukee. Tugsavul says a decision is likely coming next week.

They have no cap space. In fact, none of the business that Brooklyn has done has been transacted with cap space. Presumably they would acquire Ersan in a double S&T for Humphries.

They signed Mirza Tetovic to the full MLE, and they got Reggie Evans in a sign and trade for a 2nd rounder and a trade exception. Aside from being capped out, now that they've got two PFs, I think it's safe to say that they're no longer in the market for Ilyasova.

Ersan has already made it widely known pretty much that he is going to the highest bidder (whether in the NBA or in Europe) and minces no words about this being all about business to him.

The latest about Ilyasova:
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--nets-target-ersan-ilyasova-as-backup-plan-if-they-can-t-land-dwight-howard.html
The Bucks have offered Ilyasova a five-year contract near $40 million, league sources said, and so far have shown no desire to partner in a sign-and-trade deal that the Nets need to acquire him.
Ilyasova, 25, has listened to overtures from other teams and is waiting to see what unfolds. He’s taking two visits to two teams with salary-cap space this week, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, sources said.
It looks Spurs have zero chance of getting Ilyasova. The only way they could get him is by offering him a huge contract like $35M/4 years and giving great assets to Milwaukee. He's not worth that. Spurs would better by just signing Diaw and/or Lorbek.

Splitter is a Center, the Bucks would want him. You could definitely see a S&T this offseason by the Spurs. I suggested Blair, Bonner, and Neal for the #12 pick which the Bucks own because they need depth and shooters. But I think it would take Splitter, Bonner and Neal for Ilyasova. Honestly, I wouldn't mind the Spurs S&T for Mayo as well. They could have a 3 team trade where they trade Green to Utah, a 1st rounder to Memphis, and the Spurs pickup Mayo.
Spurs have alot of options this FA, and the way things are playing out, I glad they didn't trade up in this draft but stay put and seem to be looking for established players to upgrade their roster.
Parker/Mills/De Colo
Mayo/Manu/De Colo
Kwahi/SJax
Ilyasova/Lorbek
Duncan/(FA Vet like Camby)
Its obvious the Spurs are working on something otherwise Duncan would have been resigned by now.
For me, one question is how much does Splitter figure in the future of the Spurs. When he's a free agent in a couple of years, will the Spurs be willing to pay him? Is he important in a post-Duncan scenario? Because there's no doubt that other teams will be willing to overpay him. I still think Ilyasova + Udoh can be more successful than Splitter + Bonner + Blair. Giving up Splitter is no easy decision, but I have to think it would make a sign and trade work.
A small observation: When a non-regular posts an idea on spurstalk, it's often responded to immediately by regulars with things like Not Possible, Won't Happen, Move on.... but then when Timvp posts the same thought, all of those guys go quiet as church mice. Timvp clearly knows his basketball and I enjoy reading his posts, but it's pretty amusing to an infrequent spurtalk visitor how obsequious and frightened so many of the posters around here are... God forbid some of you should ever disagree with him!

I've noticed that too but there are some posters like TD21 that like to disagree with LJ. But I guess it's because MOST,not all, want to hate on us Greys and think we don't have knowledge of basketball. But there are some respected "bolded" that actually respect "Greys" opinions and answer their questions.

I'm all for dumping Bonner/Blair/Splitter in that order of preference. The key with Splitter, is he is the most attractive of those assets, so a logical thrown in if we could trade the 3.
The thought of paying Splitter a lot of money as our primary big man, once Duncan retires, just not feeling it.

Why was this guy considered a realistic option?
I hope the Spurs explore every option possible to land him, including sign & trades. The Bucks are one team that might actually be interested in a guy like Splitter and if they think they're going to lose Ilyasova anyway, might be interested in a Splitter & Bonner combo plus other parts or future draft picks in exchange for him and a young project big like Larry Sanders or Ekpe Udoh. Outside chance at best, but definitely worth a try.
If Duncan is ready to take a paycut for his new contract, Ilyasova isn't that much of a reach.
If that's true ... that's verrrrrrrrrrrrrry interesting.
How would the Spurs go after him? Gotta think he makes more than the MLE . . .
I couldn't really argue if the Spurs want to go all out for Ilyasova before going with Diaw/Lorbek. Ilyasova is an aggressive player who can hit threes and rebound at the power forward position. Those are so rare that the Spurs have to be intrigued.
Hopefully we hear more . . .
I don't think anyone said it was a "realistic option." Everyone seemed to acknowledge that it was an outside chance.

Is there anything that prevents the spurs from trying to extend tiago this summer? I can't imagine is value being any lower btw now an next summer (not that he's cheap). This and the Asik deal, plus whatever pekovic will get next summer isn't encouraging.

Not possible under the CBA. Extensions are for players on contracts of at least 4 years. Tiago is on a 3 year contract.
So much for that. Thanks.
