View Full Version : David Stern gave Jim Rome the business

David Stern is sick of being asked about whether or not the NBA draft lottery is rigged.

It’s a legitimate question, of course – more than a handful of people I’ve talked to asked, “hmmm, wonder if Benson agreed to buy the hapless, talentless Hornets under the agreement that Stern deliver him a franchise player who could stir fan interest?” – but the NBA commish has had enough with the questions.

Undaunted, Jim Rome asked Stern about the lottery this afternoon. In a mocking tone, Stern shot back, “have you stopped beating your wife (https://twitter.com/MattNorlander/status/212966149556670466)?” as if to say that’s how much credibility the question has (https://twitter.com/MattNorlander/status/212966600461139971). It doesn’t appear as if Rome has ever had any such incident. The 1985 draft, though … conspiracy theories linger (http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2012/06/05/conspiracy-theorist-then-this-sports-story-is-for-you/).
We’ll post the audio as soon as it is available.

sons Jim Rome should have knocked Stern clean the fuck out after he made that smartass remark. I'm talking he should have stomped that piece of shit out.

also it goes to show you how guilty Stern is that he is getting this upset and firing back with childish and ignorant comments like that. can you even begin to imagine just how much shit Stern and other NBA officials would be in if the NBA were ever investigated by congress? all of the details behind the NBA rigging playoff games and lotteries and pushing certain star players to the top would make the 1919 Chicago "Black Sox" World Series scandal look legit.

What I don't get is I know they had auditors supervise the lottery last year (pretty sure Ernst & Young) and sign off on its legitimacy. I only saw part of the draft this year but didn't see anything about auditors supervising it. Not sure why you'd audit it one year and not the next.

Stern's a fucking joke. Instead of answering in, you know, a professional manner, by saying, "I understand it looks bad but etc etc", he just plays it off as if only a looney would believe that theory holds any water... even though a good deal of people DO think the NBA is shady.

I would have definitely clocked the fucker for that.

Goran Dragic
06-13-2012, 02:18 PM
^yeah, Stern getting so defensive with that response only makes things look worse. He should have just politely said, "I understand that given the circumstances New Orleans winning the lottery looks bad but blah blah blah."

OTOH, people who complain about Stern and still watch the NBA/spend money on the NBA are retarded. Stern works for the owners. The owners want a commish who will maximize their team's value and who will maximize profits. Stern has repeatedly destroyed the players in CBA negotiations and has marketed the NBA extremely well. The only way the owners will ever want a new commish is if enough people get fed up with Stern that it starts making a difference to the owner's wallets. Until then he isn't losing his job anytime soon.

lol, if it were rigged, then they wouldn't have given the #1 pick to New Orleans.

E&Y does the NBA lottery anyway, that would be quite the conspiracy if they rigged it.

BRHornet45
06-13-2012, 02:42 PM
sons maybe a better word to describe the NBA is "controlled" rather than "rigged". like I have always said ... the NBA is carefully controlled, partially scripted, sports entertainment. it has been that way for over a decade now ever since they decided to change the way they officiate the games due to the demand and competition for high television ratings, ticket sales, etc..

listening to the interview, Stern says people think it's rigged because of people like Rome or media types, but that's bs. most people think it's rigged because something seems off. you won't see media types doing a thorough investigation of the lottery.

but Stern is starting to troll Rome hard. I have to give Stern credit, he is a master manipulator, he managed to get under Rome's skin towards the end.

It's a classical example of a loaded question. You cannot answer either way, but Stern was acting as if Rome's question was loaded. Stern could just say "no".

It's used all the time to illustrate loaded questions.

A loaded question is a question (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Question) which contains a controversial or unjustified assumption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assumption), e.g., a presumption of guilt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilt).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question#cite_note-0)
Aside from being a logical fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_fallacy), such questions may be used as a rhetorical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhetoric) tool: the question attempts to limit direct replies to be those that serve the questioner's agenda.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question#cite_note-Walton-1) The traditional example is the question "Have you stopped beating your wife?" Whether the respondent answers yes or no, he will admit to having a wife, and having beaten her at some time in the past. Thus, these facts are presupposed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presupposed) by the question, and in this case an entrapment, because it narrows the respondent to a single answer, and the fallacy of many questions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallacy_of_many_questions) has been committed.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question#cite_note-Walton-1) The fallacy relies upon context for its effect: the fact that a question presupposes something does not in itself make the question fallacious. Only when some of these presuppositions are not necessarily agreed to by the person who is asked the question does the argument containing them become fallacious.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question#cite_note-Walton-1) Hence the same question may be loaded in one context, but not in the other. For example the previous question would not be loaded if it was asked during a trial in which the defendant has already admitted to beating his wife.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question#cite_note-Walton-1)
This fallacy should be distinguished from that of begging the question (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Begging_the_question),[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question#cite_note-begging-2) which offers a premise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premise) the plausibility of which depends on the truth of the proposition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposition) asked about, and which is often an implicit restatement of the proposition.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question#cite_note-SD-3)
The term "loaded question" is sometimes used to refer to loaded language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_language) that is phrased as a question. This type of question does not necessarily contain a fallacious presupposition, but rather this usage refers to the question having an unspoken and often emotive implication. For example, "Are you a murderer?" would be such a loaded question, as "murder" has a very negative connotation. Such a question may be asked merely to harass or upset the respondent with no intention of listening to their reply, or asked with the full expectation that the respondent will predictably deny it.

Jim Rome is one of the worst sportscasters around-- a melodramatic drama queen. I'm glad Stern dogged him. If conspiracy theorists could come up with one shred of evidence it would be one thing, but it's always people bitching when their team doesn't win. No one in San Antonio hinted that things were rigged when they got Tim Duncan with the #1 pick even though Boston had better odds, and no one claimed the finals were rigged when the Spurs won 4 titles, but as soon as things don't go the way the homers want, they cry conspiracy.

:lmao:lmao:lmao Big 4 firms get sued all the time for missing stuff in audits. That doesn't mean they knowingly go along with fraud and deliberately contribute to it. If Ernst got caught participating in fraud, saw it and chose to ignore it issuing a false opinion, they'd face the same fate Arthur Anderson did.
