Checking prices -- not turrble. Of course there are quite a few hotel deals; I could cheap out on that so I can take the coveted direct Southwest flights.

That seems to be best. Vegas is a 2 or 3 day trip max for me, so two days of games in that span is nice. Although the 17th and 18th might be nice too considering going during the week is typically cheaper and less busy...

former Spurs Garrett Temple will be in the summer league:
Garrett Temple will play Summer League in Orlando and Las Vegas
Temple will play with Pacers and Cavaliers
Garrett Temple wants to return to the NBA after one season in Italy with Casale. The American guard will play both Summer Leagues in Orlando and Las Vegas.
In Orlando Temple will play with the Pacers while in Nevada he will wear the jersey of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Damn, that's a good get for the Spurs. He was one of the better undrafted players available. DraftExpress had him as the 43rd best prospect heading into the draft.
Good athlete, decent size and still has some upside. Plus, the Spurs have good luck with 6-foot-9 power forwards out of Alabama, tbh.

Why Dawson - I mean, good kid, but they know nothing will come from it.

From my source he had other summer league offers but had committed to during playoffs
Spurs151

I don't think he is playing to get a contract from them. Summer league is about getting a contract with any NBA team, not just the team you are playing for

Oh and byars is playing also
DPG21920

Dawson is a solid bigman to have around for summer league. In summer league play, you need a few players who are accustomed to the system and don't have to prove everything from scratch. For that reason, Dawson will be really helpful.
Is James Anderson going to be on the summer league team? I know at one point this summer he was planning on it. Haven't heart recently . . .
Spurs151
07-09-2012, 10:47 PM
Oh yes and James Anderson is playing as well
Spurs151
07-09-2012, 10:49 PM
Yeah I don't think Dawson is looking for a career in San Antonio, a few NBA teams are interested in him so he is just playing because he committed to them early on

Marcus Denmon
Dwight Buycks

LD Williams
JaMychal Green
Eric Dawson
Cory Joseph
Derrick Byars
James Anderson
Leonard probably won't play since he did so well as a rookie. He might but unlikely. It looks the team needs a couple more bigs. Dawson and Green are the only two bigs on that list.
Hopefully not that scrub Zeller, tbh.

JaMychal Green is clearly the most attractive name among players not in Spurs pipeline. If he plays well, he could get a training camp invite with a true chance to stick given how Spurs roster is build.
This summer league will be crucial for Joseph and Denmon. Spurs could end up with 8 "good" guards on their roster for the start of the training camp (Parker, Ginobili, Green, Neal, Mills, De Colo, Joseph and Denmon). They are in tough spot and will need to show something in this summer league.
I'm surprised that James Anderson is on the roster. His agent wanted a trade sooner this year and his wish hasn't been granted. It seems that there isn't some kind of bad blood after that event. On the other hand, JA has had a great attitude last year despite being in the doghouse. Maybe this SL is a reward with Spurs guarantying him a lot of playing time to showcase him for other teams. Or maybe JA is still in Spurs plan.
Yeah, if Denmon outperforms CoJo then it's proof that the 2011 draft wasn't stacked and the 2012 one was...
JA might still be in trade plans. Let him perform in Summer League to attract a team which would be willing to part with a big.

I would have preferred to draft Sacre....I believe Denmon could have still been ours via UDFA signing. At least Sacre would have given us a legit 7 fter with some decent offensive skills for a rookie.....he would have to work on his D no doubt, but you can't teach size......and like I said, Denmon could still be on our Summer League Roster.
I think the Spurs FO isn't so high on 7 footers. None of the major contenders except LAL utilize 7 footers on both ends of the court extensively. Duncan plays with a smaller PF in Blair/Bonner/Diaw (or McDyess a couple of seasons earlier) a lot.
Plus Tiago proved that while you can't teach height, you can't teach attitude.

Any guard, specifically Joseph and Denmon, will have to make quite an impression to be on the Spurs roster for 12/13 season. Joseph still under contract and Denmon will be playing for one. What are the cons to cutting Joseph?
Bruno
07-10-2012, 01:20 PM
With De Colo signing with the LLE, there is a Neal-like contract available. If one of JaMychal Green or Denmon is impressive enough, I can see Spurs signing him to a 3 years minimum salary contract with a first year fully guaranteed.

Me too. I thought either Sacre or Sims would be the slot. For them to outwardly admit they're looking for a center, Sacre would've possibly been a decent choice in the second round.
I don't have an issue with Denmon and really hopes he pans out, but I wonder if the Spurs still could've got him as an undrafted free agent?

Does anyone know anything about Salah Mejri from Tunisia? He's looked pretty active off the bench on Utah's SL team.
Synergy has numbers on 44 games he played for the Antwerp Giants in the Belgian league. Small sample size, grain of salt etc
His two largest offensive categories are Post-ups (19% of total offense, scored .713 points per possession) and Spot Up (19% of total offense, .571 points per possession). The FG% on those spot ups was 26.9%, so I'm really surprised that it's one of the top two categories in terms of usage.
His FG% is much more respectable on anything around or going to the basket (cuts, P&R Roll man etc) and his overall FG% is 51.8%, so if he cut out the jumpers his offensive #'s probably wouldn't be terrible.
Defensively he only allows .588 PPP on post-ups.... but this is the Belgian league we're talking about. I don't know what the level of competition is there, but I wouldn't be in a rush to read too much into that number.

As of last week, Houston had traded Lowry and Dragic left in FA, so they didn't really have a starting PG, much less a backup. On the other hand they have a lot of PFs of varying quality and experience.
The Spurs are in the opposite corner with lots of guards, maybe not a starting guard in the bunch, but some trade bait?

Well if you do the breakdown of Spurs guards trade wise:
Players that won't be traded: Parker and Ginobili.
Players that can't be traded because they are signing a contract tomorrow: Green, Mills and De Colo.
Players with no trade value: Joseph and rights to Denmon.
Players with a trade value: Neal.
The only guard available is Neal and Rockets are fine at SG. Teams like Sixers or Grizzlies could be interested in a player like Neal: they aren't rebuilding and really needs some shooting.

Surprised Leonard is on the team! Nice to see Anderson and Ajinca on the team too.

Nice. We finally get to see Richards face some formidable talent.

Nice roster.
Some thoughts:
- With Joseph, Cedric Jackson and Kalin Lucas on the roster, I doubt Denmon will be tried at the PG position in SL which is a good thing.
- I'm waiting for a disaster with Ryan Richards but it's at least good to know he has still some links with Spurs.
- Tyler Wilkerson did well with Spurs SL team 2 years ago. How much has he improved after 2 years overseas?
- Eric Dawson fidelity with Spurs organization is remarkable. It really sucked for him that he got injured at the end of last season and Spurs had to sign Byars instead of him.
- It will be interesting to see what Kawhi will do at the first offensive option.
- Ajinηa could be the pleasant surprise of this SL team. He has had a very strong end of the season in France and has still a crazy upside. Spurs really lake that kind of player, so a 4th French player with Spurs...

Nice bruno! Plus, we'll be able to see how good a coach Vaughn can be

I remember watching Tyler Wilkerson from 2010. Freak athlete back then but was very raw both offensively and defensively. He's the type of player who would greatly benefit if he had Leonard's or Faried's motor.
For me, the hype on Richards is at an all time low. We'll see how he does but expectations are low.
Ecstatic to see Kawhi there. I thought he absolutely should be at the summer league. He doesn't necessary have to play big minutes but I want to see him vocal and leading. If he does end up playing big minutes, that's great too.

How many roster spots are still up for grabs? At least Richards and Ajinca make summer league a little more interesting...

Yep, with Don Newman leaving, Vaughn should be a way bigger part of Spurs coaching staff.

Is Ajinca still throwing up 3's and not going inside any? Guy has a 7'8 wingspan and still wants to play outside...Anybody seen him play in france recently?

I haven't seem him play but from what his coach said, he played a little more in the paint. He still take some 3's but it's better than in the past.

What do you see more likely bruno, spurs going for a proven veteran (Turiaf ie), or if any of the Summer League bigs do well, one of them?

Unless Spurs do a trade or amnesty Bonner, I don't see them really looking at anther big. They still have 5 vet PF/C with Duncan, Diaw, Splitter, Bonner and Blair.
JaMychal Green or Alexis Ajinca could have a shot at getting a contract but they will have to be impressive during the SL.

That's true to 3 out of the 5 bigs are woefully undersized and 2 out of the 5 are underskilled and inadequate. It's simply not the right combination of bigs. As presently constituted, their bigs are not good enough. Besides Duncan, there is no one to protect the rim, no one to block shots and no one to defend the paint. They absolutely have to get better on the frontline.
I hope Ajinca becomes a surprise and forces the Spurs to make a hard decision.

I don't like too Spurs pool of bigs.
Saying that, the answer isn't as easy as "let's just sign another big". There are two issues with it. First, getting a quality big with only the min to offer is nearly impossible. Second, it will create a logjam.
I see two way for Spurs to improve their frontcourt:
- The most logical would be a trade. Spurs have a bunch of expiring or almost expirings contracts as assets. Some of these exprings (Neal and Blair) can play too.
- If by miracle a quality big can be had for the min, then Spurs must trim their roster by either amnestying Bonner or trading Blair for future considerations.

Other teams do it all the time. You'll never know if a big will work if you are always super picky.
