A Texas guy I've had a crush on since high school is Radney Foster. His main success is as a songwriter (he's written many hits for big names), but he's a talented singer/entertainer (solo and in the duo Foster and Lloyd) too, and just an all-round cutie patootie ;)

gfa4vxpdH3Q&feature=related

I saw Foster and Lloyd at a festival in the late 80's where they did a twangy redneck set of Led Zeppelin, that was unusual, but a lot of fun.

You cannot talk Texas music without SRV. I didn't forget him like I did Lyle Lovett, I just didn't list him for some unknown reason. His "DirtyPool" and "Tin Pan Alley" are already in the mix.

Lead Belly is actually from Louisiana. When he was discovered by the Lomax's he was in the infamous Angola Prison which is in Louisiana. He was born in Louisiana.

Yes Huddie did spend a lot of time in Texas.

I have Kristofferson.

Actually it's the truth. Who doesn't know about SRV and "Texas Flood" and know he's a Texan.

Texas Flood a tune first done by fellow Texan Larry Davis.

I like to mix and match. Of all my CD's I haven't listened to one of them from start to finish. My thing is to take some of that and some of this and mix it up. Yep, my productions. Sort of a hobby.

I always have some theme, music that fits.

Some titles...

Ice Picks, Razors & Pistol Blues...old blues tunes about cutting/shooting
British Blues...John Mayall, JoAnn Kelly, Savoy Brown, Eric Clapton etc
Long Black Train...Songs about trains
Prewar Mississippi Delta Blues...Charley Patton, Robert Johnson etc
Locked Up In Prison...Songs about jail/prison
Sun Studios...Elvis, Johnny Cash, Howlin' Wolf etc
Blues from Georgia...Blind Willie McTell, Pegleg Howell, Barbecue Bob etc
Country Legends...Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb etc
Paleface Blues...Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashley, Dick Justice etc
Piedmont/East Coast Blues...Josh White, Julius Daneils, Luke Jordan etc
Early Rock & Roll...Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Elvis etc
British Rock....The Beetles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Burdon and the Animals
Bob Dylan...Dylan, Joe Cocker, Donovan etc
Tony Joe White..White, David Allan Coe, Lucinda Williams etc
Blues From St.Louis...Lonnie Johnson, Henry Townsend, Roosevelt Sykes etc
Piano Blues...The Sparks Brothers, Georgia Tom Dorsey, Leroy Carr etc

and on and on...

I realize some here need to.."yeah right"...that's their problem not mine. But I have a huge amount of music to work with. One thing I do is keep records with records, tapes with tapes and CD's with CD's when mixing.

When it comes to this Texas mix, I'll start off with Blind Lemon Jefferson working my way up by dates to Ray Wylie Hubbard.

Let's claim Robert Johnson, because his only extant recordings were made in San Antonio and Dallas.

Weird to think that some of if not the most important and influential recordings in music history were made in San Antonio.

I think a pretty significant one is Don Henley. He didn't bring a lot to actual Texas music, but was real big in bringing a Texas flavor to mainstream music.

We can't go with where someone recorded. We have to go with where they were from and influensed. Charley Patton the King of the Mississippi Delta Blues recorded in Grafton Wisconsin and New York City.
