I am reading some stuff from the WP8 event going on right now... Looks good. This is especially cool:

...All this will run on a kernel shared with Windows 8 and Windows RT. In other words: yes, Microsoft has managed to get one platform running on desktops, laptops, tablets and phones, the idea being that apps can be more easily ported from one to the next...

If this works like they are saying (and I am at least a little hopeful since win7 was great), I could consider switching.

First, we don't know the price, they didn't say. Second, IT departments everywhere are likely salivating. They have to support ONE platform across all access devices. Budgets = slashed while keeping the same level of service, this can increase efficiency by a large factor.

As for pricing and availability, Microsoft is only going as far to say that it will be "on par with Ultrabook-class PCs" and available about three months after the Windows 8 launch (when the RT model will be available).

I was reading the low-end version with an ARM processor that's supposed to compete with the iPad price-wise only runs Windows 8 RT (Metro-only apps, no Win apps). The souped up version with an Intel processor is supposed to come out later on and include full blown Win8, but they're saying the prices for those are going to be in the Ultrabook range (not even sure what that is today).

I thought Win7 was a really good release for MSFT. Haven't played enough with Metro yet though.

128gb ultrabooks are ~1000. I bought my Asus for $950. If that's what the price range is going to be for the 128gb Surface, Ultrabooks are going to take a massive hit. I think the 128gb Surface will start off closer to $1500, while the 64gb will be closer to $1000.

At least with the XBox, Microsoft was making up money with the licensing for the games (they get a percentage of every sell), so they could sell the console at a loss.

They certainly can't afford another dud like the Zune, especially on a device that should cost quite a but more to make.

i don't disagree whatsoever. I am just saying they have been all over the place in release prices relative to the market. The Xbox360 didn't try to undercut the market. The Zune did. The Zune came out as portable mp3 players were on the decline which was a major problem.

It will be interesting to see what MS does.

With USB and HDMI ports, though, and the included kickstand and keyboard/cover, AND the fact most laptops will eventually feature Windows 8 anyway, you have to assume this will be every bit as appealing to people looking for an Ultrabook as it is to people looking for a tablet.

The fact it can be easily used as a laptop, without sacrificing convenience or requiring a ton of peripherals, has even piqued my interest, and I'm someone who has been largely unimpressed by both tablets and the Windows 8 tablet-y interface.

The folding keyboard can probably be used in your lap. Not as comfortable as a laptop would be though. Probably better to use it as a tablet if you're not by a table or desk, which I'm fine with. It's a downside to it, but I think the upside of the product--that you don't need to have it in your lap or on a desk or table when your casually computing--outweighs it.

Microsoft sets Oct. 26 as Windows 8 launch date (http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-windows-8-october-26-20120718,0,3378995.story)

Windows 8 will launch Oct. 26, Microsoft announced Wednesday afternoon.

The upcoming operating system will indeed meet the October launch date many observers had been expecting for quite some time.

"Mark your calendar: Windows 8 will be available on October 26th, 2012," the company's @Windows account tweeted.

Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky, president of Windows, announced the news at the company's annual sales meeting. Earlier this month, the company had confirmed Windows 8 would launch in October but it had yet to give a solid date.

Windows 8 will work with touch-screen devices, mice, keyboard and styluses too.

The company has also said the Microsoft Surface table that was announced last month is supposed to launch in conjunction with Windows 8, but Microsoft did not mention it in a blog posted Wednesday.

The company has also said Windows Phone 8 will launch some time this fall, so on or around Oct. 26 is looking like a likely launch time for the mobile operating system.

Quad HD has literally 4 times the resolution of 1080p hd (the current full hd standard:

2160p is the shorthand name for Quad Full High Definition (QFHD), a video mode planned to appear in future HDTV products.[1] It has a resolution of 3840×2160 (8.3 megapixels in the 16:9 aspect ratio) and is one of the levels of 4K resolution.[2][3][4] The number 2160 stands for 2,160 lines of vertical display resolution, while the letter p stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced. In a progressive image, the lines of resolution of the image go from the top of the screen to the bottom.

2160p is also called "Quad HD" since it displays four times the number of pixels of the highest HDTV standard resolution, 1080p (a standard which is also known as "Full HD"). The only planned higher definition format for television is Ultra High Definition Television.

Acer's CEO talks more about Surface:

http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/07/acer-tells-microsoft-to-think-twice-about-surface/

Acer executives have criticized Microsoft's decision to build its own tablet in the past, but now the firm's CEO has offered Redmond a more direct warning. "We have said [to Microsoft] think it over," Acer CEO JT Wang told the Financial Times. "Think Twice. It will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction." Microsoft has acknowledged Surface's potential to frustrate its OEM partners, telling the Security and Exchange Commission that competing directly with manufactures might "affect their commitment" to the firm's platform. Not only does Wang agree with this admission, he seems worried that Microsoft will cause this damage for nothing. "It is not something you are good at," he continued, "so please think twice." Polite, but a bit bold. Then again, Acer has never been shy about telling Microsoft exactly what it thinks.

Suppliers have had many chances to make great products on their own on a number of different occasions without reference designs.

Maybe maybe MS should have done what Intel did with Ultrabooks, but it is blatantly obvious, based on MS' history that they don't want to make hardware long term. This was their attempt to show the suppliers up when they have been horribly lacking in innovation and design. If their feelings are hurt, they can just stop producing WinTel systems and get over it...

If OEM manufacturers quit making Windows machines the platform would shrivel up and die. Do you think Windows is popular because it is awesome? No, it's bundled with almost every PC out there. This is MS shitting on the people that got them to the top. The manufacturers make some great products that sell well despite shit software like ME and Vista.

This is MS shitting on the people that got them to the top. The manufacturers make some great products that sell well despite shit software like ME and Vista.

If those OEMs gave 5 minutes of actual testing time to some of those 'Vista Capable' pieces of trash they tried peddling to customers, much of the backlash would have been abated. Microsoft is not without blame for even CLAIMING that Vista could have run on those systems (it clearly couldn't have). But ethical and smart OEMs would have refused the moniker altogether.

Vista sucked, but so did XP... Windows 2000 was the last great OS from MS until Windows 7 IMHO... It may take 2 or 3 new OS releases before another great OS.

And the reason people use Windows isn't because it is bundled. It is because they are forced to for software compatibility, and choose to when given the choice of Linux (look at the return numbers for netbooks pre-loaded with Linux early on, they are craptastic). I wish it were not that way. I wish we had some of the simplicity of Mac OSX available for all. I wish we had some of the configurability of Linux and the stability too. But we don't. We are stuck with MS. And the least they can do is give us a reference design so we don't have another 'Vista Capable' disaster.

Besides, all MS did here was swap the thick part of the laptop for the thin part to make a tablet... Tablets are for consumption. Computers are for creation. This product won't catch on, as it will have a terrible time coming up with software compatibility.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/07/acer-tells-microsoft-to-think-twice-about-surface/

acer has made shitty products since day 1, wtf are they to say anything? my first computer, not the first in the house, back in the 90's was an acer and that pos was just that, a pos! i doubt they've gotten any better since. that's like emachine thinking they have any clout.

Why not include a separate 32gb 'recovery' pendrive with the package instead?

That's absurd.

However the backup partition is probably like 10 gigs.

Completely absurd they couldn't get it down under 15. I think a full Mountain Lion install is somewhere around 5GB.

To be fair, Windows is a lot more compatible with multiple devices.

Very true. Just really surprised they coulndt cut some fat with their flagship product.

Uh? This is a tablet. You don't need any major drivers other than possibly just mass storage.

Plus it's a connected device. Have it download any weird driver after the base OS installation.

The bloat comes from the built-in apps + backups of said apps on the restore partition.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/20/4008024/ballmer-surface-is-a-real-business-won-dominate-volume

After describing Surface as a "design point" to "prime the pump" and "sell a few million," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is describing the company's tablets as a "real business" this week. In a brief interview with MIT technology Review, Ballmer avoids answering Surface sales questions, but says he's "super-glad" Microsoft did the Surface as it's important for the Windows ecosystem. "Surface is a real business," says Ballmer. "In an environment in which there’s 350 million PCs sold, I don’t think Surface is going to dominate volume, but it’s a real business."

Sounds good but it's overpriced, even the Razer Edge Pro looks cheap next to Series 7 Slate http://www.razerzone.com/store/razer-edge-pro

The concept is great. Its the best of both worlds, right? I mean I love my ultra-book but if I could leave the keyboard behind for simple web surfing I would love that.
