Next coach of the Magic is? Thoughts on the Hennigan hire?

John Hollinger
(12:17 PM)

I liked the Hennigan hire; he's quite young but he's going to have an actual plan rather than just shooting money out of a firehose and hoping it works. Given the Spurs/Thunder connections, I wonder if somebody from the Popovich tree -- Mike Budenholzer perhaps -- will emerge as a candidate in Orlando, but a lot depends on how much power Alex Martins retains and how much will be placed with Hennigan.

I could still see Avery Johnson coaching the spurs if things don't work out in NJ.

Bud definitely is waiting for his turn once Pop is gone.

Bud isn't going to wait on Pop forever. If a good situation comes along, he'd be a fool not to take it. If ORL is going to build the right way and he has a GM who believes in him, it's something he'd seriously have to look at.

I don't think it'll be right after Pop, but at some point down the road I'd bet Jacque Vaughn coaches the team.

:lol That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. I don't think the Magic want to hire a guy who made Howard cry during a game.

God no. First they pass on that bitch Lindsey and now they go after Bud? Crap, I want to keep him for when Pop walks away (since he said he's likely leaving when Tim does :().

I'm more afraid how Bud is gonna run the offense if we don't find a low post presence, or a damn good pick and roll point guard in the next few years.

Did anyone read the post? It's just a suggestion made up by Hollinger not something based in truth.

Please tell me this is a post for comedic effect and not something you posted with a serious thought. You sound like a grey poster.

This. Hollinger openly admits he's talking out his ass. Weak thread.

I want Mike to take over now. Pop doesn't have to wait for Tim to leave. I bet with Mike coaching we don't get backdoor swept by the Thunder.

I actually remember reading that Minnesota, Houston, Golden State and a couple other teams offered Mike a HC job but those 3 were lobbying to get him

Coach Bud is the favorite to get the job.

It's unclear if Budenholzer & Cheeks are not interested or whether the Magic simply are considering different candidates.
... But Budenholzer & Cheeks won't be interviewed for the #Orlando #Magic coaching job, the @OrlandoSentinel has learned

I was also told that the report about Mo Cheeks and Mike Budenholzer being frontrunners for #Magic coaching job was "baseless."

Some gushing quotes from that article to be sure:

"He is the real deal," a source told Pingalore. "There aren't many coaches out there like this guy who comes from a phenomenal franchise."

"He's (Budenholzer) a can't miss," said an NBA executive.

Hate to lose another cog but there are worse things than coaching in Orlando FL tbh.

That would make the following teams connected to the pipeline:
Thunders
Hawks
Hornets
Magic
Nets

Not bad.

That would be pretty crazy. Be weird to see Pop coaching without Bud next to him.

It wouldn't compare to when we lost P.J. :/

PJ was an assistant under Pop from 2002-2007.

Budenholzer has been an assistant coach under Pop from 1996 - present. Which is pretty damn nuts.

Of course how did I leave out those LA teams lol.

I assume the Phx connection is Alvin Gentry? Looking at his wiki the Spurs link is back from the late 80's though.

2 seasons ago (10-11) Pop got tossed during a game vs Magic. Bud went with a hack-a-howard. Dwights feelings were hurt and he talked some shit to Bud.

Bud would not be a good head coach, imo. I don't think he's a big enough asshole to actually be a good coach.

Fuck Avery. I can't stand that fucking pine knot.

good (non-)news!

that would be a major blow to our future! (not saying he is the key to championships, but we have to like him over trying out like 5 coaches in 3 years)

I guess Bud knows he will have a good and safe future here. why go somewhere else (and probably getting fired because he doesn't win with ryan anderson as his franchise player), when he is appreciated here.

A while back I saw Bud do a coaching clinic for some high school students. He can be very intense. He's not a soft-spoken guy. We don't see that side of him on the bench with Pop, because it's not necessary as an assistant.

Well Budenholzer's not a candidate, but Jacque Vaughn is.
