View Full Version : Winning MVP and finals MVP in the same season

MJ, Magic, Bird, Kareem, Hakeem, Shaq, Duncan, Moses Malone, etc. have all done it at least once. MJ doing it 4 times demonstrates why he's the GOAT.

Lebron is one game away from doing it for the first time in his career and setting himself on the path of an all time great.

:lol Kobe never being able to accomplish the ultimate feat of the NBA

MJ doing it 4 times demonstrates why he's the GOAT.

Only one other player has even done it twice: Bird

NBA MVP AND FINALS MVP TOGETHER IN A SEASON:
Micheal Jordan (91,92,96,98)
Larry Bird (84, 86)
LeBron James (12)
Tim Duncan (03)
Shaquille O'Neal (00)
Hakeem Olajuwon (94)
Magic Johnson (87)
Moses Malone (83)
Kareem Addul-Jabbar (71)
Willis Reed (70)

Pretty legit, especially since he's going against the player many thought should have been the MVP. Although wasn't that the same situation in 03 (iirc, everyone wanted Kidd to win it that year).

It really should have been 5 times for Jordan too; there was absolutely no way in hell Malone deserved the 97 MVP when Jordan led his team to 69 wins. The Bulls slipped a bit in the 93 season so at least the Barkley MVP over Jordan is somewhat understandable.

That's THE sign of true greatness.

All-time GOAT list should rank first all those that accomplished this feat and then the others.

Russell and Chamberlain should have been on that list too, but they didn't start giving out the award until 1969 (lol 1969 sportswriters thinking we have to give it to det honky West because we don't like that uppity nigga Russell).

Yup. It means you were great enough and dominant enough to carry a team to a title that was a lot more dependent on its best player than the typical championship team is. Most championship teams have a franchise player at 1A and 1B making it impossible for an MVP candidate to emerge from said team.

Yup, been saying it for years, tbh..

In addition to baseline's list, Wilt and Russell would have also accomplished the feat, had the award been given during their era..

Every true legend has accomplished this feat..I cannot place a player in the pantheon of greats without having this feat on their resume, tbh..Lebron will never be considered a true great, without this feat..

:lol not having MVP-Finals MVP on the resume

Ballots were due unusually early in 1999 and voters missed out on the Spurs coming all the way back and capturing the first seed. Otherwise, Duncan had a pretty damn good chance of winning the MVP that year too, tbh.

Finals MVP > RS MVP. As I post this, Kobe: 2, LeHype: 0. That's not the point though. It took him colluding with Bosh-spice and D-Whistle to possibly ring. After 8 years, Kobe already did that 3 times. And before you say Shaq won them 3 rings for him, it is Kobe: 2 - Shaq: 1 after "The Big Split".

You and many Laker haters are obsessed with Kobe. He's been fishing for 2 months now and you guys keep bringing him up. :lol

Finals MVP and RS MVP together in the same year was the point of this thread. Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade are just names. Wade has been horribly inconsistent and streaky during the playoffs while Bosh was injured for a large chunk of the playoffs. The Heat depend on Lebron to win games with hero ball more than any of the Lakers championship teams depended on Kobe.

After 8 years, Kobe already did that 3 times. And before you say Shaq won them 3 rings for him, it is Kobe: 2 - Shaq: 1 after "The Big Split".
The "Kobe 2 - Shaq 1 after their divorce" argument is Cully's intellectual dishonesty at its finest. At the time of their divorce, Shaq was 32 and Kobe was almost 26. Kobe's best years were ahead of him and Shaq's best years were behind him. The fact Kobe won more rings after his 26th birthday than Shaq did after his 32nd birthday does absolutely nothing to take away from the fact that Kobe was the 1B to Shaq's 1A from 2000-2002, hence why he had no finals MVPs or regular season MVPs during that stretch while Shaq had 3 finals MVPs, 1 regular season MVP, and finished top 3 in MVP voting every year from 2000-2002 while the best Kobe did was finish 5th.

2000-2002 Shaq is a lot better than 2012 Wade and 2012 Bosh put together. Prime Shaq was one of the most dominant players of all time.

Hell, the Heat's title depends way more on James than any of the Lakers' titles did on Shaq, much less Bryant.
