I'l just put this here I guess. Nexus Q would sound awesome at $100, or even $150. But $300???

No argument here. I will wait to see a full list of its features, but damn that is a lot.

lol more than the 7" nexus. you'd think they would have learned from the Revue. On top of that, you can get Sony's new Google TV box WITH A BLU RAY PLAYER for cheaper. wtf!?!?

This tablet may have a hard time competing with the next gen fire, which will probably have about the same hardware but a much, much better ecosystem for content with Amazon.

the nexus 7 receives a lot of flak for-

-not having a rear end camera
-homescreen is portrait only
-no microSD slot

these things dont bother me THAT much, but for others its pretty much a deal-breaker.

i agree, though a lot of my friends say that the amazon ecosystem is a love or hate kind of thing.
some swear by it, but some dislike the lockdown amazon-only type of thing or something like that.

- I think rear cameras on tablets are unnecessary
- The landscape option would be nice to have - custom ROMs (launchers) would probably add this
- Lack of microSD slot is annoying

I almost bought it today, but I might just wait for newer tablets running Jelly Bean. And I'm not sure if I dig 7" tablets.

I just picked up a wi-fi 8gb Galaxy tab 2 7" for $249 at Best Buy. 1gb ram & 1ghz dual core running ICS. Little thing absolutely flies. With a SD card slot and IR blaster....feature-wise, it curbstomps the Nexus for $50 more.

You still have access to Amazon's ecosystem with this tablet even without root.

Does it do Amazon Instant video? That's the only thing I would want just for convenience's stake. It's mostly dupes of stuff on Netflix, but you also get a lot of free ebooks that aren't available on anything but a physical Kindle.

I had assumed so (about the Amazon VOD), but I just checked and I guess not. Most people, it seems, are just using the browser to access amazon vod.
As far as the free e books, I know that I have gotten free ebooks through both my nook and kindle apps. (though I don't have a kindle, so I don't know if it is the same thing you are talking about)

I was just looking for books for my daughter on the iPad while using my comp, and a lot of the Rainbow Magic fairy books she likes are free on the Kindle under the Prime program but you have to have an actual Kindle to access. I wouldn't be surprised if they started walling off Instant Video either just to keep a hold it and make it exclusive. I can buy a browser on the App Store called Photon that renders flash in the cloud, but it's $5 and I barely watch Instant Video.

Ah, ok. Sound's interesting. As far as the VOD, I cannot imagine that they would try to wall it off. They want to sell their Prime memberships and that is one of the bigger selling points (though I have never used it).

I've had prime since they started offering it, just for the 2 day shipping. The video and other stuff was a nice bonus though. Still not sure if I will keep it after they start charging for sales tax soon, but they still almost always have the best prices.

yeah the two day shipping is why I have it but I have had it for free for the last two years (I have a .edu email address and my wife does too). Also, I believe that they are already charging taxes now, but you are correct that they usually have the best prices, but the margin is now much much closer.

pros:

cons:
- no adobe flash via chrome
- stock launcher home screen has no landscape mode
pet peeves:
= chrome is stock browser, while its pretty nice i still like the stock aosp browser
= for some reason, camera apk was not included out the box
= 7" is a bit on the small side, sweet spot could/should be about 8-9

dont have much of a list, its hard to say whats good or whats not because its strictly a IMO kind of thing.

After playing with the Transformer Infinity for the past few days, I've realized I don't really have a place for a tablet in my daily life, tbh. Especially not for $500.

I simply reach for my laptop or phone before going for the tablet and I don't see that changing any time soon. It's a gorgeous device; I would love it on someone else's dime.

Official: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Bundle launching on August 19 for two weeks only

posted on Aug 18th 2012 at 4:46pm by Edgar Cervantes
Share This Story http://phandroid.com/img/share.tt.jpg (http://phandroid.com/2012/08/18/official-samsung-galaxy-tab-2-7-0-student-edition-bundle-launching-on-august-19-for-two-weeks-only/#)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Bundle (what a name!) has been making rounds through the rumor mill (http://phandroid.com/2012/08/09/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-7-0-student-edition-bundles-keyboard-and-usb-connector-arrives-in-us-in-late-august/) for a few weeks now. One of our readers managed to purchase one ahead of release (http://phandroid.com/2012/08/11/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-7-0-student-edition-now-in-stock-at-best-buy-android-forums-user-purchases-one-before-release/), but that was obviously not supposed to happen, as Samsung has officially announced the device’s release date to be this August 19th.
http://phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/galaxytab2studenteditio.jpg (http://phandroid.com/2012/08/11/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-7-0-student-edition-now-in-stock-at-best-buy-android-forums-user-purchases-one-before-release/galaxytab2studenteditio/)
The education-oriented bundle comes with the tablet (of course) in white, a keyboard dock and a USB adapter for the same $249.99 tablet’s original price. It is a great deal for those looking to get a portable tablet with some extra functionality without breaking the pocket. Some might still prefer the power and quick updates the Nexus 7 offers, but the general consumer wouldn’t mind getting $100 in added value (price of the accessories) in exchange of paying $50 over the Nexus tablet.
Samsung’s official press release confirms the $250 price tag, but also brings a bit of sad news. This offer will only last two weeks (while supplies last), so you better get to your nearest participating store if you want this student bundle. You can get it starting this Sunday at Best Buy, Amazon, Tiger Direct, Costco and Fry’s Electronics.
It might not be the high-end device every gamer is looking for, but the added keyboard and USB adapter will come in very handy for light school tasks. So what is it going to be, Nexus 7 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Bundle?
SAMSUNG Brings the Galaxy Tab 2 Back to School with Student Edition Bundle adding Keyboard Dock and USB Adapter at no Extra Cost
For Two Weeks Only Beginning 8/19, Bundle delivering $100 in added value to be available at participating retailers
RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J., August 17, 2012 - Samsung Electronics America Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today announces that its Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 device will be available in a special Student Edition, beginning 8/19 and for two weeks only. The Special Edition includes a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 in a unique white color, a keyboard dock and USB adapter in the box - a retail value of $350 – for an SRP of just $249.99.
Students will realize substantial benefits from the bundle, which will add a physical keyboard to the device as well as a USB adapter that supports plugging in USB thumb drives as well as peripherals such USB mice. With these accessories and the preloaded Polaris Office, the Galaxy Tab 2 is perfect for typing research reports or even creating presentations. In addition, the multimedia features on the Galaxy Tab 2 are perfect for enjoying movies and music.
"The education market is a significant priority for Samsung, and we are very pleased to deliver a bundle that is sure to be appealing to just about any student at a very competitive price point," explained Travis Merrill, Director of Marketing, Galaxy Tab, Samsung Electronics America. "A busy student can achieve a PC-like setup in the dorm room, yet still pop the Galaxy Tab 2 out of the dock and slip it into a pocket for usage while on the go. It truly is the smarter way to learn."
The special packaging for the new bundle also includes an insert with a series of recommended cool educational apps from Google Play.
Galaxy Tab 2 - Powerful, Smart, Easy to Use
The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is a powerful dual-core tablet running Android 4.0. The devices features an integrated IR blaster for universal remote capabilities, as well as an easily accessible memory card slot for convenient loading of multimedia files in a range of supported file formats.
The tablet also offers endless content access in a sleek design that can maximize the home entertainment experience. The Smart Remote App and built-in IR Blaster turns the Tab 2 into a universal smart remote, helping users easily find their favorite shows. Users can choose from over 450,000 apps, surf millions of web pages with Adobe Flash™ support, and access favorite movies and TV shows from Google Play or Media Hub.
In addition, the Galaxy Tab 2 is fully Google certified for complete access to Google Play and is competitively priced at $249.99, so students don’t need to compromise when selecting a tablet.
The bundle will be available while supplies last, from 8/19 through 9/1. Participating retailers include Best Buy, Amazon, Tiger Direct, Costco and Fry’s

:tu Certainly can't go wrong with the Transformer series but it sucks it couldn't transform your life to convenience. Maybe it was just a matter of habit for you? What are you doing on the laptop that makes you put down the tab to make a grab for it?

Problem is, it's a tweener device if you have a smartphone and a laptop. What to check scores from the game? Smartphone. Want to quick browse a page to get it's number? Smartphone. Want to type up a quick email? Smartphone. Want to write a detailed message? Laptop. Broswing the internet and message boards for prolonged periods? Laptop. Podcasts? Smartphone. Instant Messaging? Smartphone.

Especially now with phones with 4.5' screens, there's not much of an issue with reading text. And typing setences on a tablet feels very awkward, especially when there's not a way to prop it up while typing. And if I was going to get a keyboard for my transformer, I'd rather just get an ultrabook/Macbook Air.

There stands only 2 reasons I'd personally use a tablet: 1) Watching movies/TV shows in bed (feels awkward lying with it + I have a wall mounted TV near me); 2) Read books or comics (which is very nice)

But I can't justify $500 for a gorgeous e-reader and movie player.

Only because Google decided to use the most chincy mic jack possible that is not compatible with the square credit card reader. Just about every other damn phone and tablet do support the reader.
