Lakers acquire Howard from Magic for Bynum

The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired center Dwight Howard in a trade with the Orlando Magic, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. The Lakers will also receive the Magic's second round draft choice in 2016. In exchange, Orlando will receive center Andrew Bynum and the Lakers' first round draft choice in 2015.

Howard, an 8th year player out of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, is averaging 20.6 points, 14.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocked shots per game during the 2011-2012 season. The 26 year old 6'11" center has career averages of 18.4 points and 13 rebounds. A 6-time NBA All-Star and member of the 2004-2005 NBA All-Rookie First Team, Howard also won a gold medal with the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2008 Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. He also led the Orlando Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals but lost in 5 games to the Lakers.

“We’re extremely pleased to be able to make this trade.” said Kupchak. “Dwight is a proven player of all-star caliber in this league who can score and rebound and he’s still a young player. We feel this move strengthens our team in the short term as well as the long term.”

I'd rather trade Bynum straight up for D-Will and look to trade Pau later...Bynum didn't really contribute much of anything during the back 2 back titles..In fact Miami won it with a flamer like Bosh in the middle and OKC made it with a hack like Perkins...we don't need Bynum ship his ass out for D-Will and then trade Pau...

An Internet report last week asserted Kobe Bryant presented a sales pitch for the Purple and Gold to Dwight Howard, who was so turned off by Bryant’s effort it curdled the Lakers’ chances of signing Howard long-term should they be able to acquire him this season from the Magic.

Scooter the Recruiter’s proposition: Come here and be the third offensive option behind me and Pau Gasol and be our “Tyson Chandler.”

Supposedly, Kobe also made it clear Los Angeles would be Howard’s, “but only once he [Bryant] decided he was done playing.”

All that was missing was, “Hurry, offer ends at midnight tonight.”
