Typical spurs fan here on spurstalk...quick to overreact to unproven talent that we didn't draft...people u do know the season doesn't start for like another 3 or 4 months and there's still free agency...and to top it off we're on the very back end of a dynasty
...this is the process...i for one will trust the people who original built this dynasty to lead us to continue success....for all u bandwagon fans....ill see u when we're in the conversation for a title

It just seems that some spurs fans here wouldn't have been happy about the draft last night unless the spurs were able to move Blair for a lotter pick.

Many of us are thrilled to have a GM who doesn't make moves just for the sake of making moves.

As Buford said, they looked into moving up, but there were no advantageous ways to do so. So they didn't do it. Big shocker!!

Barely any other contenders are making any moves. Spurs can't draft much with the 59th pick.

Don't blame Pop for shit he has no control over.

Are you going to bitch about the lack of free agent signings later too? When Pop has no control over the feelings of all the players who don't want to play in SA and would rather play in LA, Miami, or NY instead? Is that also Pop's fault? gtfo.

Blame Pop for shit he actually did like start Manu instead of Green, or not playing Blair until it didn't matter, or playing Bonner too much. The stuff you're whining about is ludicrous.

The spurs better not trot out the same team as last year, just another year older, another step slower.

The spurs better not trot out the same team as last year, just another year older, another step slower.

It all depends on what deals are available to be made. Better to trot out the same old team than panic and get worse.

Remember, the RJ for Jax deal happened a long while after the Spurs realized that RJ was going to keep sucking, because that's how long it took them to find another team that was willing to give them something worth having.

We need to try to get Neal, Blair, and Bonner rotation minutes and showcase them, and hopefully that will lead to being able to move them for something of value. We need to try to develop Tiago either into a better rotation player or a better trade piece.

It's all about patience at this point.

Spurs seem to have a deal in place for both De Colo and Duncan, yet neither is signed at this point. If Duncan does take like 7mil a year salary (which he seems willing to probably take a big cut this time around), the Spurs could amnesty Bonner, renounce this BAE, and sign Lorbek out right w/o using any of the MLE, which I think this is what the Spurs are planning to do. At this point, they can sign De Colo, resign Green/Mills, and do a Sign and Trade (Mayo/Ilyasova).

I think the main priority is to get Lorbek here w/o using the MLE, in case the Spurs do resign Diaw or use it to sign another player to upgrade the roster. Spurs do have some ammo for a Sign and Trade with Splitter, Green, Neal and Blair and future picks. I feel we will just have to wait for a week for anything goes down.

I'm sure it's been explained a million times already but it's not possible to use both cap space to sign FAs AND the MLE - it's either/or. So this scenario wouldn't work.

In any case, the Spurs are unlikely to have any cap space, so they'll use the MLE and maybe the BAE.

Lol....priority to get Lorbek so we could trade Splitter

Splitter >>> Lorbek

But nothing new .. 3 years ago Splitter was going to be the king here. Everybody want to pair him with Duncan..... Now he is garbage.
Now it's the time to Lorbek. Next summer he'll suck and we will want to trade him.

Depends on how much Duncan resigns for and if Bonner gets Amnesty. Its possible, but Duncan would have to take a huge paycut to make it happen.

It's not possible to use both cap space AND the MLE. Per the CBA. Doesn't matter how much Duncan gets or whether Booner is amnestied.

BG_Spurs_Fan
07-05-2012, 09:24 AM
Yes it is. The thing is, BAE and MLE count against a team's cap as well.

Let's say the cap is 59mil this year. So in order the Spurs to have a shot at signing Lorbek w/o using the MLE, the Spurs would have to renounce their BAE and after signing Duncan, they would have to be 8 mil under the cap, 51 mil total salaries. Its possible. If the Spurs amnesty Bonner, Duncan signs for 7mil a year, and the Spurs trade Neal/Blair or do not pickup their options (not likely to happen), they will be able to do just that. They could also just trade Joseph for peanuts and rescind the QO for Mills.

Spurs have alot of options to tweak their roster at this point. It will be interesting to see what they do come July 11.

The Spurs would not be able to create enough cap space unless they find some team under the cap willing to take on Jackson's contract.

In your scenario they would still be unable to use the MLE.

Mel_13
07-05-2012, 09:56 AM
Yes it is.

No, it's not.

The last around I provided you with the definitive reference on this subject. You either couldn't understand it or chose to ignore it.

You try to imagine a scenario where a team creates cap space, uses that cap space up to the salary cap, and then magically pulls the MLE out of it's pocket to spend another 5M.

It sounds too good to be true because it is.

If it were possible, surely there would be examples of teams using cap space to sign players and then later using the MLE. The rules on this have been in place since the implementation of the 2005 CBA. That's 30 teams for 7 years. Over 200 chances for some team to employ this magical scenario of yours.

It's never happened.

Now there are two possibilities as to why it has never happened:

1. It's against the rules

2. You're smarter than every capologist that's ever worked for any NBA team since at least 2005.

I'm going with #1.

Couple of things...1) with all the movement in the last few seasons, I don't think you'll see a ton of big names this year. Dwight Howard being the exception. This is to the Spurs advantage IMO if they can just add a couple of nice pieces and give up on a couple more *cough* Bonner. .2) I know Duncan needs to get PAID like most say but isn't it strange he hasn't yet or not? I would sure think he's all for it in taking a little less, it means bringing in a nice piece or even keeping one of our own. He's made a TON of money already...it should get pretty interesting.

That is exactly what he is doing. He wants us to come to his realization that Tiago is pure shit so as to get rid of him w/o fan backlash. That makes perfect sense when you consider his insecurity & fear of the fans. CIA POP.

We have that, probably, Spurs are not in big rumors 'cause they prefer to develop who they already have rights on or people that have already played in our system.
Sfer all, last two seasons ther's been no time for a full summer for the younger players to develop inside our system.

Considering our actual situation, I would't be surprised if we decided to just stay with the players we had this past year, plus the new faces of De Colo and Lorbek...and, maybe, someone to replace Bonner.

That said, it's obvious that our need, as for now, are :

1) a really good back up at point guard (Ginobili is ok just for stratches, Neal is not, Joseph probably never will and Mills is still unproven and probably doesn't have enough play making skills...); answer : sign De Colo ? mmmh... possible, considering his game looks a lot like Gino...but we'll have a better idea off his play making skills after the olympics

2) another a wing capable of playing more than average defense against talented opposite wings al la Harden/Durant (Leonard is OK but after him, Jackson and Ginobili are one year older, so ok just for stratches, Neal is not); answer : sign De Colo plus re - sign Green and re-sign Anderson ? after the Batum - Minnesota/Portland signing I don't see in the market, as for now, a so better defensive option at the wings than these three (De Colo is a good stealer, Green was very good at defense last year and Anderson problems, as strange as it may seem, were more on effense than on defense);

3) an athletic pf (neither Blair nor Diaw are - also if the second has some chances to be in better shape - Bonner will never be).

answer : amnesty, sell or trade Bonner and sign Lorbek. acquire ? ha, ther's the rub...but i'd say anyone with clear athletic/defensive skills that's not a total knucklehead (for instance, Drew Gordon ? Mahinmi ? Sanikidze ?)

No great free agents out there. Ask the Mavs. Our best bet is to wait and let everyone buy the mediocre players and set the market for Green and Diaw. Then decide if the offers are worth matching. If things go south with those two, sign overseas guys and TD. Leave some money for an eventual buyout player.
And go to war with what you got.
