Jul 1, 2012 - Blake Griffin agreed to a maximum value contract extension with the Los Angeles Clippers shortly after 12 a.m. Sunday, reports Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-griffin-paul-20120630,0,6278902.story?track=rss&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&dlvrit=53285). Griffin was eligible for an early extension as a first-round pick with three years in the league. Other 2009 draft products are also eligible for early extensions before the 2012-13 season begins. The new contract won't actually take effect until the 2013-14 season.

Griffin was eligible for a Rose Rule contract -- worth 30 percent of the
salary cap -- due to two All-Star berths. The Clippers also wisely selected him as their five-year extension choice. Teams can only offer one such contract at any given time.

Turner reports that Clippers point guard Chris Paul continued to delay signing an extension. The reported offer to CP3 was for $60 million for three years. Paul is scheduled to become a free agent in 2013.

Not a big fan of Griffin, but the Clips absolutely had to do this. They owe him more than he knows. Good for them getting this done.

Mistake imo. He's going to be a huge financial ball and chain for that franchise.

I would normally see things similarly, but it's the fucking Clippers, and he actually made them relevant. They need to hold on to this cash cow as long as they can. This also helps their chances to re-sign CP3 one would think.

He actually didn't make them relevant. CP3 did that. He made himself relevant by being an amazing dunker and half way decent PF. He could never do for the Clippers what James did for the Cavs, even with Mo, Paul, j:lolrdan and Billups (and a host of other talent).

He's the "been a while" guy, meaning it's been a while since anyone came out of the draft that's been worth a fuck.

Doods, Griffin is going to go Brad Daugherty on our ass. High flyer that's going to blow out his knees in a couple years. Not a good investment.

That's all true, although I meant relevant in the eyes of the fans/ESPN (which i do realize doesn't matter if you're in the business of winning championships). Blake's rookie campaign was a huge hit for the media and fans alike. High flying monkey ball and the dunk contest made it cool to root for the Clippers again. This is why I think he's worth it for LA.

Clippers are dumb... Paul isn't worth 20 million a year now.

Imagine you still had him along with uni-gift. Suddenly his value climbs eh?

Don't hate.

He puts fans in the seats and is fun to watch, but I just don't view him as a max guy because his defense is underwhelming.

Yeah, but that shit is over with. Now that Lebron rang, he's the media darling and Blake is nothing. Hell, TOSB shit all over him in the 2nd round. They didn't become lob city until Paul joined the fray.

Investment wise, I think Blake will be a financial ball and chain. Highlight dunks lose their luster when the guy doing it proves time and again he cannot handle the next level.

Eh, ESPN will continue to slobber his knob and continue to ignore the elite teams.

False... Griffin is a license to print money for the Clippers tbh... and he's a damn good player too...

Of course CP3 would turn down that offer, B... he can get more years from us next season.... he's already practicing with and recruiting for the Clippers... also the Knicks don't have cap space....
