Larry and the guys:
There will be no parade this year. No champagne. No talk of "three-peat".
But don't put your heads down. The city of Detroit is proud of you.
You've given us something to cheer for in June. We haven't had that since Bruce Springsteen came through town. The Pistons have done for the city of Detroit what marshmallows did for Smores. You made us come together in a way that everyone in this city should be proud of.
White, black.. blue collar, white collar. Pro-Darko and Anti-Darko.
We are a team. The city and the fans. Red, White and Blue.
Thank you for a great season. Thank you for giving me that reminder that you don't have to have the biggest cookie to have the best cookie jar. Thank you for reminding me that a team that comes together, sports or not, makes whatever you do worthwhile, no matter what the odds.
Thank you for making "Deeeeeeetroit Basketball" not only a phrase spoken at basketball games, but a cheer for the fans that bring us together, even at the workplace. You have to be from Detroit to understand what that means to the rest of us.
Thank you for bringing a title to a town starving for something to be proud of. And most importantly, even in defeat, thank you for showing the world that you can be gracious in losing. There's a life lesson in there somewhere.
And one last thing for Coach Larry Brown. You came to town and put this team together with the epitomy of class in Joe Dumars. If it wasn't for the two of you, we wouldn't have been able to carry the "2004 NBA Champions" tag around all year. If you disappeared tommorrow, you'd owe us nothing. But I ask of you, this one last request:
One more year.
Great year, Pistons. Thank you for letting us believe.
