Grizzlies Match Cavaliers Offer Sheet to Jake Tsakalidis

Memphis, Tennessee, September 10, 2004 – Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced that the team has matched the offer sheet presented to restricted free agent center Jake Tsakalidis by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Per team policy, financial terms of the three-year deal were not released.

The Cavaliers signed Tsakalidis to an offer sheet on September 9, and under the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Grizzlies had 15 days in which to match the offer.

“Jake is an important part of the Grizzlies future,” said Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West. “We were very impressed with his efforts and work ethic last season, and are thrilled that he will continue to grow with our team for years to come.”

Tsakalidis, 7-2, 290 pounds, played 40 games with the Grizzlies last season, averaging 4.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 13.3 minutes per game. Originally selected by the Phoenix Suns (25th overall) in the 2000 NBA Draft, he was acquired by the Grizzlies on Sept. 30, 2003 in a trade along with Bo Outlaw in exchange for Brevin Knight, Cezary Trybanski and Robert Archibald.

That was quick.

The clock is now ticking on West's next move. This hurts him a bit as he can't include Jake in any trade package.
