The Dallas Mavericks will use their amnesty clause on Brendan Haywood, according to a source close to the situation.

The move came on the heels of Dallas agreeing to a one-year deal with free-agent center Chris Kaman.

Haywood will still receive the remainder of his salary, $27.2 million over the next three seasons. A fourth season is fully non-guaranteed. By amnestying Haywood, the Mavs wipe out the $8.3 million on this season's payroll.

Kaman, who appears likely to take over as Dallas' starting center, will make $8 million and ate up the remainder of the Mavs' salary-cap space. By amnestying Haywood, the Mavs recoup cap space to sign other players.

Haywood, 32, averaged 5.2 points and 6.0 rebounds last season after replacing Tyson Chandler as Dallas' starter. Haywood's production severely dipped during the first-round playoff sweep to the Oklahoma City Thunder, when he averaged just 3.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 15.3 minutes. With the two moves, the Mavs still have seven players under contract.

I'm going to laugh when someone gives Haywood $7 million a year now.

honestly a likely scenario imho. as bad as he is, he's better than anything they got. and there isn't much on the market, can't think of anyone better off the top of my head tbh.

They can't bid on him, so it's doubtful.

Over the cap, it's doubtful he clears waivers.

Mavs to use amnesty clause on Haywood

haywood is shit but his contract is indeed a luscious one that could be used to trade them mavs some good players. contract whore's salary can be spread over 24 years :lol so he's technically an expiring contract for teams who're foraging for financial relief
