Mitt Romney has made up his mind about who will join him on the GOP ticket and may make the much-anticipated announcement as soon as this week, the New York Times reports, citing those close to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

If the former governor does indeed name his VP pick this week, it would give the Republican a chance to change a political conversation that is currently focused squarely on Romney's time as head of Bain Capital.

The Times report comes only days after Romney advisers floated Condi Rice's name to the Drudge Report as a possible running mate—even though the popular former secretary of state has repeatedly said she has no interest in the job. The Drudge story, conveniently, came on the same day that the Boston Globe reported Romney remained atop Bain for three years longer than he has claimed, a story that has sparked a heated war of words between Obama and Romney.

The current leaders for the no. 2 slot on the GOP ticket are widely considered to be former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman. Others thought to be on the short-list include South Dakota Sen. John Thune, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan. So, who will it be?

Right now I think he'll go with Portman. He is a safe pick, and he is from Ohio which is a crucial swing state. I think the best pick for him would be Marco Rubio, as he could help with Hispanic voters nationwide and particularly help in the state of Florida. Everyone else has some type of flaw that is likely to drive Romney away from them.

Christie would rock the boat to much, and Romney doesn't like to take chances. Paul Ryan on the ticket would lead to the Ryan budget getting a lot of press, and Romney doesn't want a fight over Medicare that could sink him. Pawlenty has already proven he is worthless on the national stage. Condi Rice still has the Bush administration unfavorables clinging to her. Jeb Bush ain't running as Romney's number 2 period.

Romney shouldn't need a Bain distraction. Only in a jealous nanny state where everyone is jealous of their neighbor is success considered a bad thing. Get ready for socialism guys, it's coming it's almost here and you're going to looooooooooooooooooove it when it gets nice and settled in.

But I don't endorse Romney and would recommend not voting. If enough people abstain the election can be called illegitimate.

Bain distraction. Thats funny. Unless mitt gets one of the big boys that have no skeletons in closet he will not name nor get in a hurry to name a vp candidate. That will give the blue team 4 months of "politics" to release on the red team. Mitt and his team appear poised to let obamas record as president speak for itself. Most likely a month before the election the anti Obama ads will run 24/7 to help remind us of how awful it has been. Until then it will be quiet for the most part. Finances Plague Company Running Halfway Houses

A company that plays a critical role in New Jersey's corrections system, running halfway houses as large as prisons, has had such severe financial difficulties over the last four years that it contemplated filing for bankruptcy in 2010, according to newly disclosed documents.

Senior executives at the company, Community Education Centers, even feared at the time that they might not have enough money to pay workers, the documents show.

Community Education's senior vice president, William J. Palatucci, is one of Gov. Chris Christie's closest friends and political advisers, and Mr. Christie has long championed the company.

Not long before Mr. Christie took office in January 2010, Community Education defaulted on its debt, the documents show.

Since then, the state, while paying the company tens of millions of dollars a year for its services, has not closely examined Community Education's financial standing or operations, according to the documents, former company executives and state officials.

If Community Education were to collapse, that could significantly disrupt New Jersey's corrections system, and if the company remains financially hobbled, its halfway houses in New Jersey could continue to suffer.

The documents also suggest that Community Education's chief executive, John J. Clancy, highlighted Mr. Palatucci's ties to Mr. Christie in an effort to impress investors and secure desperately needed financing for the company.

The New York Times, in a three-part series last month, detailed extensive problems in New Jersey's halfway houses, including escapes, violence and drug use. The system of halfway houses, which the state has long promoted as a national model, handles thousands of inmates annually who are leaving prison or on parole.

Community Education has dominated the system for over a decade, and more than 15 former workers told The Times for its articles last month that the company had kept staffing levels very low in recent years to save money. As a result, the workers said, the company did a poor job delivering counseling and other services intended to help inmates make the transition to society.

Pawlenty: Mitt Romney has 'paid a lot of taxes'

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is defending Mitt Romney's refusal to release more of his income tax returns, arguing "there is no claim or no credible indication" he's done anything wrong.

Pawlenty, whose name has figured prominently in speculation about who will be the Republican vice presidential candidate, tells "CBS This Morning" he thinks the news media have been obsessed by questions about Romney's taxes.

And he accuses President Barack Obama of "hanging shiny objects before the public and the press, and the press is taking the bait."

The former governor called releasing two years' of returns "the standard for Republican nominees."

Says Pawlenty: "I don't think there's any secret to the fact that Mitt Romney has been successful and he's achieved success and he's paid a lot of taxes."

I doubt the difference would be enough to to turn the Hispanic vote in favor of Romney, as Rove the evil genius said to win the General Election you need at least 40% of the latino vote.
