Let's have this one for the smaller sports (soccer and basketball will have its own threads anyway) and all the stuff happening next to the courts, lanes, pools ect.

Comparing the opening ceremonies, which one did you like more Beijing or London?

Just saw the Beijing one yesterday and then the London one too, and I have to say: Beijing was 1000% better!!!

Some may say: "Oh, London had so much more heart." or "Bigger isn't always better.", but London turned a monumental effort into something that felt like watching a boring disco party (that middle "music"-part was nice for about 2 songs before just taking to much time...and I really tried to see some nice stuff from the dancers but either they hadn't have any, there where to few of them or they just where lacking some real lightsuits as they got lost in the dark).

Furthermore the video clips really skrewed it up, especially because sometimes you didn't even know if it is live or just another tape (what about the boat with Beckham?...pretaped?...And how can you skrew the day/night thing with Bond up? :/ ).

Not saying it wasn't nice to follow, but I want 2008 simultaneous drums and firework footsteps and not a f***in' Mary Poppins army letting the air out of Voldemor or this...
http://www.abendblatt.de/multimedia/archive/00415/Maibaum_1_HA_Sonsti_415731c.jpg.

Not sure about other former ceremonies but I'd rather watch 2008 three times in a row than watching 2012 once again.

...Womens Beachvolleyball on right now...Not that much into Asians but these two Chinese look hot!

btw.: I'm ok with the teenagers lighting the gauldron...but it was funny with all the hype of who is going to do it.

Commentator: "Lets see who they give the fire to and who is lighting the gauldron...So much speculation...Only moments to go and we will see who is doing it...Uuh wait, THEY are lighting it!" :D

As far as the opening ceremony goes, I thought it was alright. I mean you have to realize that for China the opening ceremony was a big political statement that was intended to shape their international vision of how they want the world to view their country. The only thing I really disliked in the London opening was that the procession was very rushed...although it was nice for time reasons, I wanted more time to be spent on each of the nations participating.

Also, much needs to be said about the power of the Olympics and the opening ceremonies. You have the world's stage to educate the world of your nations history, beliefs and behaviors. Whether or not nations like North Korea get to even see an unedited version of the opening ceremony is beyond me, but nevertheless it can be a powerful tool.

It makes you wonder what athletes participating in the Olympics from certain non-democratic/non-western societies think when they travel to a place like London to compete. They must see the vast wealth of the UK in awe. Imagine for example what someone from North Korea must feel, or Cuba for that matter.

We may concern ourselves with the true value of our society and the US dollar, but there is no mistake that democracy has brought stability and wealth to the masses.

Has anybody watched the road cycling race? The British dominance of the Tour put them in a position where everybody was against them. It was funny to see how team after team attacked the British, while refusing to do anything that might help them.

There's no doubt in my mind that the English team is by far the strongest one, but everybody else's tactics where against them and they executed to perfection. Probably the most entertaining Olympic bike road race ever.

That's kind of hard here in the US thanks to NBC... They cut off smack in the middle of any sport to show us Bob Costas commenting on what food tastes like in the UK... followed by the life story of some gymnastics girl raising from the evils of her family's crack cocaine addiction to shine in the Olympics...

You either A) Watch the event uninterrupted online or B) Wait until 1 in the morning where they might air the whole thing uninterrupted.

I have no clue why in an event that is taped earlier in the day we still see people standing around or gymnasts waiting for their scores. They could condense the sports into half the time and show a little bit of some of the other sports, but they think they have to try to make it look live or something.

If you have trouble with the online streaming, try switching the audio feed to something other than English. I've been using the natural audio setting and I've not had any problems. I am sure almost no one cares about gymnastics but I am happy for Ally Reismann. I know it is tough to be in fourth and not qualify but everyone knows the rules coming in. Griping about Jordan's scores looks like bad sportsmanship. They judged the other Americans really tough on beam and floor, as well. This is why you have the competition.

Not a new rule. Been in place since 2004. It is not as dramatic, but the same issue is there for Kyla Ross. She was 6th on beam but she does not qualify for the beam finals because 2 Americans scored higher.

In the men's competition, the three-time world champion missed out because 2 other guys from Japan outscored him. Although I will not be surprised if the one develops a mystery sprained ankle so the other guy can be in the all-around.

Heard an interesting comment today about how she didn't make any mistakes, the other two Americans were simply better. The rule is harsh but hardly unfair. Let's see how she does today, since she is competing only for the team and her country, not for herself. If she goes all out and does good that will be a true test of her character.

And if she does will the US reward her for it? Or will the individual medal holders reap all the glory (as they so often do)?

On a related note, I love watching Gabrielle Douglas. She's still a bit too "youthfull" (for lack of a better description) and not as polished as some of the other competitors (Chinese, Romanian), but she's just fun to watch. She definitely looks as though gravity has a hard time keeping its hold on her :)

actually I'd love to have (nearly) all events ko-tournament style...some of the events like fighting stuff, table tennis and tennis use it anyway, but how about using it in basketball and other sports too? that way an olympic winner had to go win at all times.

only problem would be stuff like swimming and track and field.

IOC tries to keep the number of participants as low as possible (less expenses). That's why most sports feel more like exhibitions done by top athletes/teams than actual tournaments.

Fencing controversy forces Korean to sit on piste for ages, eventually costs her medal

By Cameron Smith | Fourth-Place Medal (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/) – Mon, 30 Jul, 2012 3:12 PM EDT

The Olympic fencing tournament was thrown into an incredibly emotional, dramatic and elongated controversy when a semifinal bout of the women's individual epee competition (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/fencing/womens-individual-epee-few002.html) was won on a final touch with 1 second remaining and the losing fencer launched an appeal of the decision which eventually cost her a place on the podium.
Yet it was the appeal of the decision itself which led to incredibly acrimony and one of the lengthiest delays in recent Olympic memory. Here's how everything unfolded:

[ Photos: Fencing controversy causes long, unusual delay (http://yhoo.it/OEH1Wd) ]
With time running out in one of the two semifinal matches for the women's individual epee competition, South Korea's Shin A Lam led Germany's Britta Heidermann by a single point. Officially, Heidermann had just one second to launch an attack and score a touch, which would advance her on to the gold medal match to face the Ukraine's Yana Shemyakina, a lack of time which all but ensured that Shin would advance.
Instead, the timing mechanism on the piste became stuck, giving Heidermann extra time to complete her attack and win the bout, which earned her the spot in the gold medal bout. Officials, unsure what to do without a true, official protocol to follow, eventually decided to award the victory to Heidermann.
http://l.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/dPnzC0VgLVUUB5m8LchDbQ--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMxMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en/blogs/sptusolyexperts/South-Korean-fencer-Shin-A-Lam-during-her-countrys-protest-AP.jpg (http://yhoo.it/OEH1Wd)South Korean fencer Shin A Lam during her country's protest — AP
As one might expect, Shin and her coaches were enraged with the decision, and launched an immediate appeal. Yet the appeal itself proved to be incredibly lengthy and also contained a unique bylaw that required Shin to remain on the piste throughout its duration. Unable to leave the playing surface, Shin bawled uncontrollably for the first 10-15 minutes, often shading her head in a towel while occasionally looking out to the crowd before rubbing her eyes again.
At long last, after more than 30 minutes of a delay that included the Korean federation having to expedite a payment for the use in the official appeal, Shin's attempt to overturn the result failed. That brought a crushing end to a ridiculously long period marked by piquant discussion between Olympic and Korean officials and occasional announcements trying to explain what was going on to the spectators in the crowd.

Clearly, Shin should have had a chance for the gold medal; if the timing mechanism didn't get stuck, the clock would have run out and she would have advanced. Yet denying Heidermann a shot without some kind of a playoff-style bout might have been equally cruel.

[ Related: Banned Greek jumper bitter, upset after racist tweet fallout (http://yhoo.it/MLlv07) ]
Either way, the fencing tournament somehow ended up with an unfortunate and completely unforeseen loser which will lead to plenty of gripes and arguments going forward from multiple national federations, to be sure.
Just to rub salt in the wound, Shin was forced to come back out and fence for the bronze medal almost immediately. In that bout, after jumping out to an early lead, the Korean fell to China's Sun Yujie, who claimed the bronze by a score of 15-11.

[ Related: Americans risk DQ over IOC social media ban (http://yhoo.it/ODkwkE) ]
There was little consolation for that result for Shin, particularly after she quite rightfully should have been fencing for a gold medal, a position which would have guaranteed her at least a silver. Still, throughout her bout — just as during the delay — the Korean was applauded and cheered by fans, and she earned a rapturous applause as she went and was consoled by her coach after the bronze medal defeat.
Somehow, that might not go far enough to making the Korean federation feel better about being royally worked over en route to missing out on a medal.

Let's see how she does today, since she is competing only for the team and her country, not for herself. If she goes all out and does good that will be a true test of her character.

And if she does will the US reward her for it? Or will the individual medal holders reap all the glory (as they so often do)?...

She will get a chance on the finals of the floor exercise. I hope she does great that day!

It has to be hard on Aly, as well. She wants to celebrate getting to the all-around finals, but her best friend and Olympic roommate is crushed and was eliminated from doing so herself in the process.

You also have put a little blame on the US. If they wanted to make sure of who would get to the all-around, then they could have chosen to have only 2 girls do all 4 events in the qualifying round. That is what the men did with their 6 events. Only the top 2 men did all 6.

The fencing controversy was flat out mesmerizing.

As for the gymnastics rule of only two compete for the all-around...rules are rules, but it doesn't make any sense to allow 20 other people who finished below her to compete for a medal over the current world champion who ended 4th of 24 (and clearly would have had a very good chance of winning a medal).

overall it seemes like a very gentleman like sport where they don't get mad about seconds. if there is to much passiveness, they just skip the last minutes of a period and so on...I guess nobody usually has a problem with stuff like that. but when it all of a sudden is about an olympic medal things change.

Dropping a few basketball game in the regular season doesn't even come close to dropping a match to get gold....for your country.

Not only does that expose you, but it makes your country look like a bunch of cheats.

It really does not matter. Both the koreans and the chinese were trying to avoid the number 1 seed not because they are chinese but because they are seeded number 1. It is not something to be proud of, absoultey not. but it is what is..As an ahtlete specially on this kind of event you would do whatever it is that you need to do to win games legally. Nothing illegal with what they did at all.

The reall difference in opinion and on the decision is the fact that fans would much rather watch a fun game at least neutrals that is and not givve a fck about the resluts while yerspl in general would rather win. This is not our games, this is IMO is an event for the athletes..fans get what they can get...

And the severity does not change the fact that it is a common practise. Moral win, moral lost..all you really need to do is make sure you dont do something illegal..play by rules..not the players fault but the system..

Been happening in badminton games for as long as i can remember..change the damn system to a knockout phase and eliminate tanking.

So they did something that is legal and you would still consider it cheating..C'mon. you might as well disqulity the Japanese woman soccer team who applaud the tanking that they just did..Severity does not matter...

they had to lean on something..Man up and accept the fact that shit like this would happen if you dont fix it..or act like shit like this doesnt happen in badminton...i've been watching badminton for as long as i can remeber..and they do this now? weak sauce

Just because its not illegal doesn't mean you can do it and not be punished for it.

Dropping games is not taken seriously when doing it in your sport, in a long season. This is the Olympics if you hadn't figure that out.

It is even more stupid of them to keep doing that shit when they were forewarned before.

The idiots kept doing it despite warnings. That's like saying fuck you to the officials.

The Olympics have their own rules. If they deem it cheating or abusive then that's their right to do so.

I think the issue was beacause the time is started on refs' command manually while stopped automatically by the machine as soon as the contact is made, also i believe the error was made in between and the time run out and the clock was reset (back to full second). five rings/ways to improve the olympics:

red ring...as in "who gets the red traffic light":
Get rid of some of the shooting events and horse riding events (never liked horses being more important than humans in the olympics...feels a little like f1 or nascar)...nothing against them but who is watching them anyway and we will need room for...

green ring...as in "who gets the green traffic light":
...rugby and karate need to be in (rugby will be in 2016...karate does not)...maybe bring back baseball too!

blue ring...as in "blue chips":
Either have all sports use age limits and other restrictions, or no sports at all...I don't like soccer players having harsh restrictions but basketball or tennis players not...no problem with all of them having something like an "amateur or under-23years"-limit, but its just stupid to have it one way here and another there (and that also would include pro-weightlifters and so on)!

yellow/golden ring...as in "for the gold":
Have different sizes of medals (yeah, thats stolen from bill simmon's mvp-trophy idea)...make it huge for sports where you have to put in a lot of effort in order to win a single medal (thing tennis), small for sports where you can win multiple medals in a few days (think swimming) and medium for everything in between. Actually I don't like my own idea, but doesn't it suck that the team-usa-basetball-medal is basically worth as much as a one minute effort of one of the swimmers, which also starts in like 6 other events too?...at least get rid of the medal table or count medal winners (team-usa=12...phelps in beijing=1) and not medals!

black ring as in "black sheep" and "blackout":
- Enhanced drug testing!...but thats another story...At least dq all prior drug users lifetime from the Olympics (it hurts the games, when the drug-biker wins or this cesar-swimmer would make it)!
- Make more disciplines ko-style (for example badminton ^^)!
- Increase it to at least three weeks in order to make it possible to follow more events...right now there are like 4-5 things happening at the same time...2-3 would work better...the soccer world cup has it 3 weeks, so the olympics can too! TV is doing a bad job right now but even if they didn't its just impossible to follow enough of the events if you are really interested! also there would be one more week of world peace every three years....what, there is still war at the moment??? :O
