Defining Religious Liberty Down (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/29/opinion/sunday/douthat-defining-religious-liberty-down.html?_r=2)

It may seem strange that anyone could look around the pornography-saturated, fertility-challenged, family-breakdown-plagued West and see a society menaced by a repressive puritanism. But it’s clear that this perspective is widely and sincerely held.

It would be refreshing, though, if it were expressed honestly, without the “of course we respect religious freedom” facade.

If you want to fine Catholic hospitals for following Catholic teaching, or prevent Jewish parents from circumcising their sons, or ban Chick-fil-A in Boston, then don’t tell religious people that you respect our freedoms. Say what you really think: that the exercise of our religion threatens all that’s good and decent, and that you’re going to use the levers of power to bend us to your will.

There, didn’t that feel better? Now we can get on with the fight.
Indeed.

It's my religious belief that children shouldn't be raped, that parents should leave their children's dicks alone, and that gays should be allowed to be gay. Why don't they respect my religious beliefs?

They always had a conservative author writing op-eds... Ross Douthat replaced Bill Kristol in that role.

Oh, and somebody should tell Douthat the Bill of Rights doesn't apply to Germany...

Only if you'll tell Justice Ginsburg their laws don't apply over here, either.

well let's be honest all religions hate gay people, I know circumcision is popular among Judaism and Catholic priests are notorious for molesting little kids.

Let's start with the fact that Justice Ginsburg can't "apply" any law.

But besides that, what German laws has the US applied?

I only know of one religion that "hates" homosexuals and that would be Islam.

Christian protestants, who worship using variations of the same Bible, are quite tolerant of homosexuality some even marry them and ordain them to lead their worship services.

I know circumcision is popular among Judaism
Most of whom vote Democrat yet you seem to align yourself with the liberal left more than the conservative right.

and Catholic priests are notorious for molesting little kids.
Again, most of whom vote Democrat but, regardless, this is kind of unfair in that Catholics, per se, don't condone child rape as a part of their religion any more than, say, Muslims condone hanging gays...oh wait, perhaps that's a bad comparison.

Thank God! Hey! I wonder how she feels about circumcision.

I don't know but, I'd be in favor of importing their drunk driving laws.

The Tolerance Enforcers (http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/312542/tolerance-enforcers-mark-steyn)

They’re ever more intolerant of anything less than total ideological homogeneity.

In Mayor Menino’s Boston, if you take the same view of marriage as President Obama did from 2009 to 2012, he’ll run your homophobic ass out of town. But, if you want to toss those godless sodomites off the John Hancock Tower, he’ll officiate at your ribbon-cutting ceremony.
It's as if there is a double-standard in the Democrat Party.

Would someone please explain to me why the Mayor of Boston would allow 1.8 Million dollars of city funds to be given to a religion that believe homosexuals should be put to death -- and then, preside at the ribbon cutting for the building for which that 1.8 Million dollars was given but, will threaten a fast-food chain with withholding a permit because their CEO and founder holds the same view of marriage the President of the United States held until just two or three months ago?

I'm sincerely confused by the message...someone put me some knowledge on this one.

Easiest counterargument in the world to homophobes' "religious freedom" argument: the First Amendment prevents Congress from making any laws that prefer one religion over another, due to the Establishment clause, effectively banning any religious laws tbh....

This actually also doesn't leave the role of Morality Police to the states as per the Supreme Court's "secular purpose" test, so one could argue that gay marriage bans are unconstitutional even at the state level, tbh....

not at all. There's even discussion of "cafeteria" Catholics (divorce, birth control, etc) separate from doctrinaire purist hard ass Catholics like Douthat so the CC doesn't have to bother with the cafeteria crowd.

American RCs aren't garden variety, they're the cafeteria Catholics. in the broader context of the RC Church, Douthat couldn't be more mainstream.

I just love it that Christians play the victim card when people insist the government not legislate based on their beliefs. Nobody is preventing you from practicing your religion, they're preventing you from forcing your religion on others, which is NOT YOUR FUCKING RIGHT!
