Never owned an iPhone but I was gonna give the 5 serious consderation. I personally have preferred android up til now.

Apparently, the headphone jack will be at the base of the phone this time around. This is already a deal breaker despite how good the phone may be. I owned the first Gen iPod touch which had the Jack at the bottom. the one reason I stopped using it was because using the thing with headphones was really annoying. It just felt like I was always trying to go around them with my hands.

As someone who was in a similar situation, my opinion is don't do it. You sacrifice a ton of freedom and easy phone navigation for quicker response times. The apps on the iphone don't force close as often, either. This sort of thing might be gone for the newer droids, though (Last droid I owned was a droid X).

but make sure that you have a clear option 2 if you don't like it. Don't get the iphone, not like it, then have to get a crappy phone because it is all that is available (I would wait for the next nexus to come out so if you don't like the iphone, you can get the nexus)

I love it

I like the flexibility it offers; I know a lot of people like to root for for further tweaking (well it's not the only reason I guess), but out of the box Android offers me enough customization.
So, although I like the Sense interface, sometimes I switch to Apex/Jelly Bean for a change.

I also like the seamless integration of apps, and the contact management (the contact app can automatically merge a contact with one of your Facebook/Skype's buddies)

And of course, no more iTunes, easy to transfer files from the computer... heck I even have an app to download mp3 files straight to my phone

I tend to like my perspective moreso than most because, well, I know what I like and what I'm capable of when it comes to phone and phone technology. I was a staunch Apple fanboi for a good 4 years and there was a point where I'd defend the cultish manner in which I supported Apple until I was blue in the face. However, I made the switch to the Droid-based market and have been pretty much an easy convert. But it wasn't always that way as my ONE X was a hard learn and it took me a while to disengage my apple knowhow and become more knowledgeable about the ONE X.

I guess after watching the press conference and seeing all the specs that have been upgraded and added, I don't see myself heading back to the Cuppertino behemoth. Alas, though, I have grown wiser in that as a consumer, you have the ability to chose between the Apple and the Robot.

I'm pretty sure that the maps will get better pretty fast in the US, but I also think it will take them a lot longer time for the international map to reach the detail level (and actuality) of Google. Also historically Apple always focused on its US customers first, the rest of the world later.

Also if you look at New York, it's pretty nice - I don't know when they can achieve that for the US and then the rest of the world.

I was talking only about the visuals. Of course if that's the case then it sucks. Isn't public transport info (for all the maps) supposed to be added later(!?)

Anyway I generally like the ios apple sandbox and I've managed to set up my devices quite nicely so that I don't carry my laptop with me anymore for trips that are shorter than a week.

But to fix something by making it worse, I must say that a novel approach.

There's no doubt that Nokia had the first real working map application on its phones (back in the Symbian days), but they were too dumb to capitalize on it and tried to sell the map data instead of giving it for free and charging the search results to interested parties. Actually I remember Nokia charging for the maps and then charging extra for the navigation capability.

So yeah, they have great maps (specially now they're combined with Bing) but dropped the ball so badly that they really shouldn't make fun of others too much.

The temporary death knell for Apple Maps has finally taken place. Following Google chairman Eric Schmidt’s thoughts that Apple should have never left Google Maps (http://phandroid.com/2012/09/25/eric-schmidt-says-apple-should-have-stayed-with-google-maps/), it looks like CEO Tim Cook might be feeling the same way for now. Cook wrote an apology for the blunder that is Apple Maps to all of Apple’s customers on the company’s own website.
It’s rare to see Apple admit a mistake so bluntly and in such a public manner, but let’s not forget that Tim Cook isn’t Steve Jobs. While we’re not sure the late mastermind would have taken the same approach, we know Tim Cook is a lot more easygoing than Jobs and we’re not too surprised he has no problems living up to the mistake.

Apple Maps debuted in iOS6 and effectively phased out the app which used Google’s mapping data. While that app didn’t have the navigation features, or other features, as Apple’s Maps have, it did have, at the very least, more accurate maps.
It is believed that Apple wanted to cut all ties with Google in terms of pre-installed software. Aside from searching, Google’s presence on iOS going forward will be limited to the App Store.
As much fun as we’ve had making fun of Apple for this mistake, seeing this apology makes it all feel so… dirty. To see Apple in an apologetic and vulnerable state is new to us so we’re still wondering how to process all of this.
But make no mistake about it: Apple knows it screwed up, and while they can’t do much about it at this very moment except offer alternative maps services like Waze, Bing, or Google Maps Web, we’re sure they won’t be off their mapping feet long. ehh, just three weeks ago Google Maps gave me wildly incorrect directions to the San Antonio Zoo :lol It's why I generally use street addresses instead of searching names in map apps

Apple maps, are not really apple maps, they are tom tom maps (which has a solid rep) with an apple skin over them. So far I haven't had any issues, but its a far cry from Motionx Gps app which I have used for the last year.

if you listen to podcasts downcast is the shit. I like Weather Underground's app for weather, and I use cyclemeter daily for my bike rides. I still play Flow free, Highway Rider, and Bad Piggies occasionally. Reeder is also my favorite RSS app for the iPhone.

I wish the screen would be the same size as the 4S as I fucking hate the bigger screens on these newer phones from both apple and android.
