I still only get 40. I saw an answer to this of 46 but, I think the guy was just lying out of frustration.

I see a lot of squares and now you get to see one finger.

And that's exactly how I counted them.

40 or 56 depending on the acceptable definition of a square.

And that's exactly how I counted them.

I cheated. I went 8 (small squares) 2 (small squares together) + 16 the board. (26) and then just added the rest. I didn't show my work.

Hey dude!

sorry, by definition square is equal sides.

Well, under some of the new curricula out there, it's the effort and not the result that counts.

Good job, Useruser666! Gold star for you.

Without cheating....

16 single-unit ones
9 four-unit square
4 nine-unit squares
1 sixteen-unit square
2 four-units in the middle
8 quarter units

Total: 40

How many did I miss?

40 or 56 depending on the acceptable definition of a square.

What definition are you working with? ...a square has two congruent parallel sides and 4-right angles...so by definition, squares are rectangles....but rectangles are not squares...

Thank you. I can never get these things. Had a terrible time in geometry, too.

Well there are 40 squares that be constructed from the black line grid, but there are also 16 white square regions. That's why I said it depended on definition.
