The last three NBA championships have been won by teams out in flyover country. Small wonder that a variety of media outlets and commentators have been falling over themselves to bemoan how 'boring' the NBA Finals has become and what not. Boring, perhaps, to the casual fan living in LA or NYC.
Pissing off the rubes in the Rust Belt or South Texas makes for good commentary and good business. How many Spurs fans are there in LA? How many Pistons fans in NY?
The formula for modern media coverage seems rather simple. If a team participating in a major pro sports championship is from LA or NYC (or perhaps have a national following - ie Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, etc ) then the series is a legendary classic and the stars involved are the greatest ever. If not, then it's 'boring', the stars in the series are 'overrated' and the sport is in decline.
So what are we Flyover Fans™ to do? I say kick back, open up a bottle of Shiner Bock and laugh like mad.
Three in Seven, bitches.
