If this deal goes through, it puts him way up there. He's not in the same league as Riley & West, though

Yes Riley and West (Red too) are the gold standard.

Mitch and Pop/Buford are silver medalists ...

He has the fortune to be on a team in a city where players want to be. It's not coincidence that all the NBA talent floated to the 3 biggest party cities in the US.

4. New York
Yes, there are 1.06 women for every guy. Indeed, there are 88 modeling agencies. It is a 4 A.M. town. And, yes, 66 strip clubs hide across the five boroughs. But what's the point if the law says ladies can't smoke or shake their butts in bars?

http://cdn2.maxim.com/maxim/files/2007/10/23/americastop10partycities/fs_119partyCities_atlanta.jpg

3. Atlanta
Atlantans don't get enough sleep 9.74 days a month, which helps explains why there are 91 24-hour restaurants. The secret to this top-three placing is Atlanta's 56,006 college undergrads (Vegas' downfall) and party-compliant ordinances (N.Y.C.'s downfall).

http://cdn2.maxim.com/maxim/files/2007/10/23/americastop10partycities/fs_119partyCities_losAngeles.jpg

2. Los Angeles
While L.A. has one pitiful bar for every 6,284 people, it does have teaming hordes of hot coeds and professional women. Raise a Jamba Juice to the ladies of the city's 60 modeling agencies and 38 strip clubs. And to the Greyhound buses they rode in on.

1. Miami
Drinks on you, Miami, a city with 49 modeling agencies and a 13.2 percent divorcée rate. Most of all, we like your market-driven nightlife: Bars close whenever, dancing and smoking are accepted, and happy hour is a lifestyle. Plus, Shaq's the only cop in town!

Currently West > Riley as a GM. He masterminded a 3peat squad, until LBJ & friends do that, West is the man.

If it was that easy then the Knicks wouldn't be working on a 40-yr drought. Whatever helps you sleep at night though

Would Mitch pulled off a deal of this caliber with the same players involved but in a small market such as San Antonio?

They got Carmelo, Amare and TC though. They just have shitty management and are rich without needing to win to remain that way.

Shitty management for 40 years?

If the Spurs can win 4 in 10 years, then sure. Besides, the Knicks were a powerful team once, but there was a guy named Jordan that make it transparent.

Besides, the OP is really about acquiring Howard. My comment was that the best players have migrated to just a few teams. CBA in action imo.

Would Pop be able to pull it off if he switches places with Mitch?
No, because he would be run out of town for keeping a player like Bonner on the team.

Google it. I'm sure it's there.

There's a reason players want to play there instead of SA, who've won championships.

Phil Jackson: played in NY, coached Chcago and LA

Pat Riley: played in LA coached LA, NY and Miami

West: Played in LA and GM in LA

None of these guys have faced a challenge. Their greatest obstacles to overcome have been egos. There's rarely been an issue with lack of resources, money, talent, all that in years they actually competed.

To be fair, Riley got the most out of an limited offense in NY

Not his fault if he ran into MJ and Miller :lol

You telling me that if you were a NBA coach/GM you'd choose to build a winner in Charlotte or you'd want the bankroll of a L.A. or Miami? San Antonio is a rarity as is OKC--those are the only two small market teams that have had success (though OKC still has to deal with a lengthier time). I think it would be an easy choice--coach the team with an unlimited will to win at all costs or you could be looking to land that once-in-a-sports-lifetime SA or OKC job.

Any coach would want a setup like that and having one doesn't mean the coach needed it to win, however it does cloud the issue as far as effectiveness of the coach. That's why I think Larry Brown is the best coach of all time based on how his teams improved after he took over. His negative is that he couldn't get along with management and quit everything he started, but just look at how his teams did. That's what makes a great coach, and what identifies them. Coaches like Riley can be obscured in the fog of talent. We all know Spo is nothing, but if he ends up with 4 or 5 rings, suddenly he's in the talks.

San Antonio had it in a shorter time because they tanked.

Because we didn't pick a Kwame Brown as the 1st overall tbh. Lots of teams get 1st overall picks, not many win 4 rings in a decade.

I know as an Angels fan I used to loathe it when the Yankees would slurp up all the top-notch free agents...now that the Angels molded themselves into a similar club it had kinda caught me off guard. It doesn't always necessitate a good thing as a fan, but I do feel grateful to follow a team like the Lakers.

Let's compare the two teams' salaries for next season after calculating for luxury tax and see what the answer would be.

Spurs' salary: $63.7m

Lakers' salary: $125.2m

Answer: :lmao

He'd have to shed at least 30m in flat salary to even be able to afford to pay the team this year. So either Kobe + Artest are gone, or Dwight and Gasol are gone. Or some combination of things to get the salary down. Definitely wouldn't happen with a team that can't afford more than double the salary cap, which is most of them.

Mitch learned from Jerry "Mr Clutch" West.

Just when LAL looked like they would have another second round exit they go and deliver a clutch play to get them to the WCF AT WORST.

Mitch has jokes too...:lmao

“Our feeling was, no matter what anybody said, let’s just get him to Los Angeles and we’ll take our chances,” said Kupchak. “In fact, in all my years there’s only one player who left Los Angeles, and I’m still not sure why he did it, and that’s A.C. Green.”
