Looks like my family trip for this year is going to be in Honolulu. Does anyone have any resorts they recommend and other must-do activities?

You'll want to spend most of your beach time on the North Shore.

Stayed at the Hyatt on Waikiki beach. Solid spot. Make sure you rent a car and scope out Lanikai Beach and North Shore (went to the Sunset Beach part during my honeymoon...there's a damn good breakfast spot on the way up called Ted's Bakery). Helena's is a great food spot for cheap, authentic grub, and you can always take the wifey to Roy's along Waikiki.

Edit: my bad, just saw you're looking for resorts only. Hyatt is more of a standard hotel, but nice pool area, spa, and right across from the beach.

The Machine, what do you want to do? There's tons of stuff to do here... hiking, Waikiki, fishing, etc etc. Either respond on here or shoot me a PM. I've been here 2 1/2 years so I've got a good idea of most everything to do on Oahu.

VBM..hotels are fine too....

LnG...im gonna be there with kids so im looking for anything to do. I actually want to be there for about 10 days and people have told me to try the 7 day cruise to see differnt spots then do a 3 day stay at oahu by wakiki.

Seems like a solid plan?

I stayed at the outrigger on Waikiki. They have pretty good restaurants inside and it's right on the beach.

I will be moving to Oahu in March, but I have been there 4 times this year. The most recent time I did that 7 day cruise. The excursions on the actual islands are pretty awesome, but the Norweigan Cruise Lines "Pride of America" ship sucked balls. I'm 26 and went with a bunch of friends, and the days that we were night sailing there was NOTHING to do. They would even close the spas and pools at 11pm for cleaning). The ship pretty much closes at 10pm, (the majority of passengers were senior citizens). The entertainment is stuff like 50's sock hops and cover bands of that old group that sings the song "Sherry". Also the food was bad (aside from the endless pineapple). Even the pay for restaurants were below average.

If you do a cruise to see the 4 major islands make sure it's not NCL:Pride of America

I'll be in Maui Oct 20-27th. I've only been to the big island to date so I'm looking forward to it.

Lng and SAS23, you guys are living the life. I go to sleep every night with my wife discussing her "making jewelry on the beach" goal. Fuck Hawaii for not having reciprocity for Texas lawyers. :lol

I'm actually thinking about doign the 7 day cruise myself, since I haven't had a chance to hit up the other islands yet. When are you getting here? If I take the cruise it will probably be no later than November, I can let you know how it is.

You could probably spend 10 days on Oahu itself, with a little downtime. If you're outdoorsy, there's a few good hiking trails:

Maunawili Falls
Manoa Falls
Diamondhead Trail
Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail

Then there's kids stuff to do:

Zoo
Aquarium (kinda sucks)
Sealife Park (ride on dolphins!)
Botanical Gardens

There's a few cruises as well, plus a ton of beaches obviously. If you're going to do the cruise, and spend only three days in Oahu, you should spend at least one day in the Waikiki area (with maybe a trip to Haunama Bay) and one day on the North Shore/Haleiwa.

A note: If you're coming up in the winter time, and want to bring the kids swimming, North Shore is not the place for that :) Huge waves and griptide.

My advice, and I don't mean this in a bitchy way, is to go to a different island.

Oahu is the island I've spent the least amount of time on, so I won't pretend to be an expert, but it is by far my least favorite of them all.

so a few of the people in our grp do not want to do the cruise....so we're thinking maybe 5 days in oahu and 5 days in maui? Has anyone tried that? I guess i can find a flight between islands?

Have to agree here. Pick one island and stay there for the duration.

Personally, when I go back to Hawaii, I will stay in Kauai the entire time. So ridiculously beautiful, secluded and tons of shit to do. I believe it is named the Flower Island? Memory sucks.

Anyway, we stayed in Kauai and Maui and with no doubt in my mind, Kauai was superior in every single way.

Don't spend 5 days on Oahu. Take one day see Pearl Harbor and hike Diamondhead and then get to another island.

+1 to Kauai. Absolutely breathtaking. Been there twice and can't wait to get back.

We rented a condo on the beach in Haleiwa (North Shore) last month and loved it. Almost private beach right out the door, great water, coral reefs, etc. Sleeping at night hearing the wind and waves crashing the beach. In a condo you also have the option of cooking in when the kids are tired and cranky.

If you've seen a pic of my kid, you probably noticed he has Blepharophimosis. (In laymans terms, he has small eyes.) he'll need surgery at his next base, and the closest place to Cannon is Albequerque, four hours away. Not sure if they'll move me to another base because of that.

what does that surgery entail?

Basically, they take muscle and attach his lid to his eyebrow. Then probably another surgery to reshape his eyes and remove excess skin. (Look up the lector muscle function and/or BPES for more info.)

I have a nephew who had this done. Pretty standard stuff or so I was led to believe but I can understand wanting a really good doc doing it.

I think it was the fact that it was the distance it would take to go to a specialist at Cannon. (3 1/2 hours). Another consideration is that they have to reshape the skin around his eye (since it's not just ptosis... technically it's BPES). But yeah, I definitely want to do my research. :D

Another consideration is why would he even want to open his eyes in Clovis?

:lmao Maybe if he had been born without a nose, it would've been the perfect place...
