I hope it's for a seat behind the bench. Everyone should move up a rung. Engelland has paid his dues and should be on the bench replacing Newman. Forcier moves to Vaughn's lead seat behind the bench, and Ime fits in somewhere behind there.

That's what I figured just wondering if the Spurs are definitely going to promote within for that seat on the bench.

I guess Spurs weren't looking at an assistant coach with the best coaching knowledge. They were more looking at someone who could be close to the players. A relatively young former player seems to be a good fit. TJ Ford could have been that guy but it looks like he won't. Udoka being a tough guy is a plus too.

Good for him. Spurs continue making a difference in several choice player's post NBA careers.

Ime should make a good trainee assistant and, I'm sure, help in day-to-day player dev.

Chip is the shooting coach, I don't think he will be moving to the bench. My guess is Newman's spot will be given to Forcier. In fact, when P.J. left in 2007, his place on the bench was taken by Brett Brown (who, at the time, was the "director of player development") with Chad Forcier being hired to fill in Brown's previous role.

Udoka eager for next chapter
Pop told me, ‘I hope I get a chance to hire you some day,’ ” Udoka said. “That made the decision to stop playing a lot easier.”

Maybe Pop should have told Bonner the same thing...

Hope he injects nasty into our young wings. Kawhi needs a boost while Green could certainly use it. :toast

Ime will be replacing Newman, and Vaughn's spot, considered "extra" when he was hired, will roll off, as per the E-N Udoka article this morning. Everyone else stays where they are.

WTF are you talking about? Ime isn't going into the front office, he's going to the bench as a coach.

Although to be fair it continues the trend of the Spurs hiring scrubs for the coaching staff. It's clear guys like him have a good head and IQ - they just lack the physical gifts needed to really succeed.
