View Full Version : win shares
So I'm dumb as hell and don't really get the concept of win shares, other than Ginobili is rated #3 in active NBA players, anyone care to concisely explain it to me?
It's a function of how much a player contributes to his team on both ends of the court. This effectively means stat padders on bad teams get lower win shares than a guy who posts slightly less numbers but is on an elite team.
Meanwhile, win shares per 48 minutes is a measure of how good a player is "per-minute". For example, Karl Malone has a very high win shares number because he didn't miss a lot of games and had a very long career; however Tim Duncan trumps him in win shares per 48 minutes.

WS shows exactly what a poor copy of MJ that Kobe really is.
Doesn't Kobe have sub .200 WS48?

Yeah, but it isn't like being .200 is bad. Jordan's career WS/48 is .250 (so is David Robinson's). .250 is superb, GOAT-esque WS/48.
Kobe's at a paltry .184. Duncan's is .214. LeBron's is .233 for now (no declined years watering it down yet)
And for more reference:
Bird: .203
Magic: .225
Kareem: .228 (despite half a dozen declined years watering it down)
Wilt: .248
Shaq: .208
And Pau Gasol each year as a Laker:
.239
.223
.220
.232
.165 (Kobe .132 same year)
Lemme guess... Bynum led the Lakers in WS48 last season.
