View Full Version : Is LA really that bad?

Is it just me or does media seem to make out it's a really rough shithouse place, I've never been obviously but I rarely hear it talked about positively. Thoughts?

Los Angeles?

I love it here. One of the best places to live in the world.

Probably just movies and tv showing the worst places

There is a lot of bad places to be honest lol.. Tons of low income cities and gangster riddled towns, but Los Angeles is so damn big, you also got a ton of great little cities mixed in as well. Throw that in with perfect weather almost year round, beach, hot chicks, and great places to eat it's a place that would be hard for me to move from tbh..

IMHO LA is extremely good/bad. The nice parts are really nice if you can afford to live there. Houses in the good areas are ridiculous. A $100,000 house in a decent neighborhood here in SA would cost $1,000,000 in a decent area in LA. Great weather, good beaches, tons of stuff to do. The traffic is fucking awful.

Nah, it's like that in real life, just like New York is constantly under alien invasions and attacks by supervillains.

At least they did the right thing and nuked Houston though.

It takes a while to get used to turning left on red. If you don't you will never get where you are going.

Skid Row is no joke, but as CC said there is good and bad.

I turn left on red here. It is legal. I learned this in drivers ed 17 years ago.

However, you may only turn left on red if you are on a one way street and turning onto a one way street.

I don't think what people are describing is solely an L.A. problem. Each and every major city has its gangs and blight. I think the fact that you have a diversity in which you cannot find in the majority of cities makes it worthwhile living in. You can go from one ethnic enclave to the next in a matter of minutes if not seconds. Furthermore, you can venture into the 'less-than-savory' places if you don't look like you're asking for trouble. Perhaps that is more or less the product of me growing up in the area but it isn't as bad as the media outside of the SoCal area makes it out to be.

I'm talking about two way traffic intersections. They typically don't have left turn lights like we do. They have left turn lanes but just the standard 3 light stop lights.

People turn left after the red light stops the oncoming traffic...maybe 2-3 at a time.

Put your foot on the gas when your light turns green and you are getting into a wreck with people turning left on red.

I love LA, beautiful skies and women and good food and oxygen bars. Yes, it's rough and the bums are a huge problem...but that's kinda the charm - that you can experience the beautiful skies, women, food, and oxygen bars, and those fuckin' bums have to sleep in the ATM lobby at the bank.

and the city officials must be retarded to put traffic lights where they're never needed tbh

So then it shouldn't be hard to imagine that there are good neighborhoods and bad ones. Just like almost everywhere else in the world.

Nah, I like the northeast US.

Just don't care for LA based on having gone there.

Honestly, though, there's not much of America worth seeing multiple times. It's really about finding one place that isn't too goddamn expensive and has some decent facsimile of first nature that isn't too distant — that's where I'm comfortable settling.

Yea USC is in a shithole. One part I never liked going through as a kid. I heard south central ain't as bad anymore tho, this true?

I grew up in Anaheim about 30 min away from downtown

its pretty bad at SC. The campus is nice, been to both SC and UCLA its about a wash inside both beautiful but once outside it becomes kate upton vs rossie odonell.
la has the same problems as many cities, but their history has always suffered from a lack of pride or protection in popular culture, so it can get distorted. its not the noir you see from boyz in the hood or training day. some of it may be fact or just myth. its size is what hurts it with the gangs and crime shit. NY has way more police around and its half the size, its easy to protect out there.
you can probably find anything you'd want in la, but if you are living at sc mr balkman damn i dont know what to tell you, find some sluts to bang otherwise its gonna be boring. one thing la has lacked is some bbq.
have heard bludso's has some nice texas bbq but its in crenshaw.

Still isn't the safest of areas but if you're not flamed out or rockin' the blue, you won't get shot on most occasions. It isn't the late 80's and 90's in SC, but it still isn't Laguna Nigel or the Palisades for the most part. However, violence is random in L.A. and as someone mentioned--there is fewer police policing L.A. that there are other choices in L.A. than South Central. Funny though, how the hipster encroachment and the gangs in the East L.A. are of Silverlake and Echo Park have had some runins in the past few years.

USC wasn't all that bad for me at least, but then again I didn't take walks in the middle of the night in the surrounding neighborhoods and I also commuted mostly between Long Beach and Exposition Park. The times I did spend near the campus were the student housing on campus or on/near the row. Those times were with ex gfs so chillin' was the name of the game, or, if we needed to go we would hit up the 3rd Street Promenade or head towards my neck of the woods.

This is probably the best time of year to hit the beaches in the LA area. In the early summer it's often really foggy at the beaches, but with the Santa Anna winds just starting to kick up it makes awesome weather for swimming, body-surfing, surfing, boogie-boarding, etc. I bet you can get IM to give you a ride to Huntington since it's 16 year-old latina paradise.

Here's another example of what I'm talking about where I see it in media etc. from a book I'm reading:

'It was difficult to maintain a spiritual allegiance to a city swimming in drugs and pornography, shattered by gang violence, steeped in hollywood style cynicism and controlled by politicians as venal and demogogic as they were incompetent.'

And it continues.

the LA city might be a hell of place now with immigrants & gangs but the people from there, i mean the native LA citizens are just as fine as everyone from other major cities tbh

Parts of LA are nice, but it's the multitudes of vacuous, vain people that sour the area for me. It's a plastic wonderland. All flash and no substance

Yeah, I'm generalizing, there are definitely cool/interesting people, just not that many of them. :lol

I'm obviously partial to the Northern part of the state

I grew up in the LBC...I know what CSULB has to offer. There is a ton of white chicks that go there but to be honest, there is a ton of mixture there so you can find a number of cute Latinas and Asians as well as some Black chicks. I used to attend conferences there for work and it's still a playground if you got the game.

Seriously, LA has a lot of great shit to do within easy day trip distance. I agree with symple that lots of the people are assholes, but if you like being outdoors it's an awesome place.

qft son. i was born north of San Fran, visited family there when i was younger so i'm very partial to that area and the Niners (that beatdown on the Packers was something else. I love what i saw from all facets of the team). i've always wanted to move out there and try to live in the Bay Area, but all my friends are in Texas. I guess I'd need a reason or great job to do it.

i can't comment on LA since i've never been, but i've never had any desire tbh. i guess it would be cool to check out the ladies, just to see how hot the hos are there. maybe check out a few landmarks where some of my favorite movies were shot. perhaps try to take a piss on Staples Center. based on what i've gathered from trusted sources, LA seems like the epicenter of moral vacuity and douchebaggery in this country.
