"It was a weird game for Texas Saturday night, a 45-0 win over New Mexico, one that hearkened back to the Colt McCoy era, where the Longhorns could light up the scoreboard with little success running the ball.

Perhaps even weirder was the fact sophomore Malcolm Brown received only two carries, easily the lowest total of his career. Sure, Brown didn’t do much with his carries, earning five yards, but he was the most efficient running back last week against Wyoming and a player who’s earned the right to be involved in the game plan each weekend.

“That is nothing against Malcolm Brown or anything like that, it was just how the rotation was going,” co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin said. “Malcolm had some more throws and more pass protection when he was out there. That is the nature of the game when you play with those two backs like that. One guy is going to have more carries because of rotations. Sometimes the other guy is going to have more pass protection and things like that. They are both equally important in those situations.”

Brown was the target of three throws, two of which were completed. He finished with 23 yards receiving.

With all that in mind, here’s this week’s look at the quality carries of Texas’ three-headed backfield, comprised of Joe Bergeron, Malcolm Brown (usually) and Johnathan Gray. A quality carry is defined as a carry of four yards or longer, or a carry resulting in a first down or a touchdown, and it’s a useful way to see who’s doing the most with their touches."

New Mexico:

Joe Bergeron — 82 percent (9-for-11, long of 11)

Malcolm Brown — 0 percent (0-for-2, long of three)

Johnathan Gray — 29 percent (2-for-7, long of 15)

Season:

Bergeron — 62 percent

Brown — 56 percent

Gray — 33 percent




This logic makes no sense whatsoever.............. If M Brown was the starter and most efficient back last week, why give him just 2 carries??? He might as well come back home and be the star running back for the Runners!!!!!!

All three backs will one day be in the NFL, unless they get hurt. A running back in the NFL has a life cycle of about 5 to 7 years and he is done. When guys go to a school like Texas it's to protect that life cycle and prepare for life in the NFL.

Why go to a school like UTSA where you will spend 3 years getting pounded because you are the big fish in a small pond. Go to Texas where you will get a great college experience and come out ready for the NFL without all the ware and tear.

This is the exact reason Gray came to Texas knowing that Brown was already there.

Why would you run your best RB into the ground and increase the risk of his injury against NM?

The way I see it they just treated it like a preseason game. Against better teams, Brown will get the majority of the carries.

lol, they face an SEC level defense in every practice, in fact I would consider it better than all but two defenses in the SEC.

This isn't about a single game, this is about the wear and tear a season puts on their body. This is about the wear and tear a college career puts on their body.

Not sure if you know but Gray came out of high school averaging about 40 touches per game for 4 straight years. That is a lot of wear, his father is a former NFL RB and he specifically guided his son to Texas because he felt it was a great situation where he could share the duty and not have all the wear and tear he got in high school.

Thats exactly what Im sayin........why draft a back with 724yrds because he split time with 2 other 5 star backs, when you can grab an 1,800-2,000yd back from OU, Bama, Oregon, USC, UCLA, TCU..........etc??? These backs dont have to share a damn thing and can pile up the yards. I still dont see the logic in keeping M. Browns carries to 2. Thats like saying, Im not going to throw to my wide receiver today because I dont want him to get injured. This is football gatdayumit!!!!

If Brown was a junior or senior, ready to make the leap to the pros, I'm sure he would have gotten more carries for that sake, but he is a sophomore on a team loaded with RBs and trying to make a push for a conference title, playing against a crappy team. Why on earth would they run it 25-30 times with him, especially when they have no reason to do so? If this was OU, or WVU, you can guarantee he would have gotten more than 2 carries. Don't be a dumbass.
