Just top-to-bottom, decent to awesome tracks. Greatest hits records don't count. I would've added Floyd's Dark Side, but I've grown to hate "Money." Most of these aren't even favorite bands of mine, but just albums that meet the criteria--IMO.

I wouldn't have thought of that but that's a great choice. Although not full length, Sap is great all the way through.

Yup... You can add Sap to this as well.

Mer De Noms by A Perfect Circle is one that comes to mind.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4fk2bbgCSsQ/T9omaijLOCI/AAAAAAAADLs/5CxEK-JR0HY/s1600/A_Perfect_Circle_-_Mer_De_Noms_-_front.jpg

Sublime selftitled is another great option.
http://sublimestp.com/media/albums/Sublime.jpg

EDIT: While neither Jar of Flies or Sap are full-length albums, they were initially packaged together as a combo LP on vinyl. So, together, they make one completed full-length album.

A lot of good albums here.

I have to mention Toxicity here because it is one album that recently became a "full album" to me. I used to skip past the first 6-8 songs and only listen to the last half. I just let it play one time last year and realized that the whole album is good.

I also feel that they do political rock way better than RATM.

Yeah. Of the good artists, the albums are arguably (no-so, in fact) their worst, and most of each artist is jointly responsible for how shitty modern popular music has been.

Half of those groups are absolute drek.

Hoobastank? Puddle Of Mudd? Only shit missing from that crapfest is Nickleback.

Don't mind System Of A Down, but I've never understood their style. Always felt forced, odd, and needlessly off. Maybe I'm missing something, and maybe the "off" is part of the point, but I've never, ever felt compelled to choose a single SOAD song over a single Rage song.

Matter of fact, I could just as easily, at least for me, list their self-titled and Battle of Los Angeles for this thread.

I am not saying that I don't like rage. I don't know I feel like rage has an arrogance about them. I can't point to anything in particular, it just seems to me that they feel like they are superior. SOAD seems dirty, down with the masses. I guess that is the driver for me.

Also, Serj has amazing voice control. his ability to switch notes so quickly, without sliding (like without sliding from one note to the other, instead jumping from one note to the other) is awe inspiring.

Lastly, I agree with you, their sound is different. "A little off" may even be a fair description, but I like that. It seems to work for them and therefore for me. This is not to say that RATM didnt sound different, Tom Morello did some unbelievable things on the guitar, but I just like SOAD better.

It's meaningless because it doesn't tell me anything about the music others than the manner in which it was performed and produced. I feel the same way about "alternative". It doesn't mean anything. For the most part, unless you are clever and concise and specific to each individual artist, categorizing music with generalities is pointless.

Both of you are right. Someone says 'indie' and I'm thinking singer-songwriter area. Getting more specific and then categorizing becomes pointless.

Dylan had a great sound for what he was about. His vocals were perfect for the songs he sung. Not unlike the old Tom Waits or the legendary Charley Patton. They weren't trying to be a song bird, it wouldn't fit.

I'm just going give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're trolling. Dylan has one of the most distinctive voices in music. You might as well say Howlin' Wolf has a horrible voice, or Tom Waits. It's not weak, it's not off pitch and it's perfect for the music. Therefore . . . not horrible. He sang that way intentionally. Listen to Nashville Skyline for comparison. Totally different.

{sigh}

I don't know why people have to lie to themselves to defend their musical tastes. It's just disingenuous and fanboi-ish, imo. Dylan is one of the greatest ever (and I admittedly have just about all his albums up until Desire), but the fact of the matter is he didn't have a great voice. Distinctive doesn't mean good--in fact his voice fit more aptly when he was mimicking Woody Guthrie. When he dropped that he sounded like a goat being slaughtered. It works in some songs (LaRS, etc) and sounds like death in others (Maggies Farm, Leopard Skin yadayadayada)

ohmwrecker
09-20-2012, 11:37 AM
Obviously, it's a matter of personal preference, but I'm not being disingenuous at all when I say I like Dylan's voice. I actually prefer the "wild mercury" period over the Woody Guthrie influence or what came after blonde on blonde. Admittedly, he sounds like gravel through a lawnmower these days, but even that's doesn't bother me. I think just saying his voice is horrible is not very accurate.

Also, I never said it was "good".

Dylan's voice does suck relative to the competition. There are plenty of musicians of that era that could've sang/could sing his songs better. Of hand I could name Jim Morrison, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Lennon. But you don't listen to Dylan for his voice.

That's the point I'm trying to make. Great musician and lyricist. I just don't feel the need to blow him for every facet of his music.

No, Dylan's voice is damn near unbearable. His songwriting skills are hard to argue against, but his voice doesn't "go well with" anything.

And this is coming from one of the biggest AD fanboys out there.

Actually, even as a Dylan fan, I've often wished he'd recorded Blonde On Blonde with more of his Nashville Skyline/New Morning voice. That's the only (pre-80's) album where I find his voice borderline irritating, because I feel like a lot of those songs had a much higher melodic potential.

It is. And, like you, it's part nostalgia, part that fucking album was simply fantastic.

People (comedians like David Cross) tend to lump Staind in w/ bands like Creed or Evanescence, but...you're right. Wgaf.

If I'm driving or working or doing something while I'm listening, then no, I hardly every skip.

But if I'm in bed, I'll skip ahead if I can't stand a song or really want to get to a particular track.

I think digital music in a way has really hurt band is that people don't always give certain tracks enough time to grow on them. BACK IN THE DAY, when it was cassettes, it was a pain to skip around and I think it forced listeners to give the full album a chance.

Also, for the most part, you couldn't just buy or d/l the single you heard on the radio. You had to buy the full album. Which I think also meant people were more willing to listen to the whole thing (as opposed to paying $10 and listening to 1 song over and over.)

I wondered that, too.

Of course most of the albums I own have some tracks I love, some I like, and some I like perhaps considerably less than others. And depending on my mood at a given moment, there may be a song I'm just not in the mood to listen to right then. But there are very, VERY few albums in my collection with songs that I hate enough to skip every time.
