Going to the department of motor vehicles can put a frown on anyone's face, but for New Jersey residents, smiling is officially against the rules.
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has cracked down on drivers smiling in their driver's license photos because their smiles could interfere with new facial recognition software (http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/fbi-facial-recognition-software-street-cameras-crime-17197593).
New Jersey resident Velvet McNeil told the Philadelphia Inquirer Thursday that when she went to get her license at her local New Jersey motor vehicle center, she was told she could not smile for her photo. Shocked, McNeil said she walked out of the center.
"Your picture means a lot," she told the newspaper. "It's who you are."
Elyse Coffey, a spokeswoman for the Motor Vehicle Commission, said that there was no law banning smiles, only a simple request that drivers not smile "as if you've just won $5 million in the lottery."
"The digital photos allow us to conduct a facial recognition scrub, which allows us to check the photos of our 19 million faces to make sure each driver has only one driving record and you are who you say you are," Coffey said. "We're asking customers not to make exaggerated facial expressions."
Coffey said that residents are also asked to remove glasses and head wear, unless it is for religious reasons, as well as to keep their eyes open in order for the database to operate properly.

This is ridiculous. Who cares if you smile in your driver's license photo? It's yours so you should be to smile in the picture if you want to do so.

Not rediculous.

The biometric identification doesn't work right if you smile.

Who gives a fuck about biometrics? When you say that a person can't smile in a photo, you're crossing the line in my opinion. You're telling that person how they should feel. You're saying that a certain emotion is illegal or wrong. That's bullshit. Your emotions and thoughts are yours and no one should have ownership of them or be able to tell you how to run them.

I don't like it either, but the state can do as they please of this as a drivers ID is not a right to have.

An ID is an ID... Several years ago they started implementing a biometrics database. Smiling changes the face enough as not to get proper biometric data of a person. Biometrics is not part of a person's ID, like it or not.

Fuck biometrics. A person shouldn't be told what type of emotions they can feel and experience just because of a shitty technology. I do think that a person should have control and ownership of their emotions and thoughts but if it was possible to somehow suppress emotions in the form of a pill or shot like in the movie Equilibrium, I would take the pill or the shot. Just my opinion.

How big of a problem is it really? There's only like 27 people in Jersey who have something to smile about.

Why can't the guy operating the bio machine tell the person to smile like they did on the ID instead of restricting people's rights?

Jacob1983
09-22-2012, 01:41 AM
Because they're "sense offenders" and are not allowed to smile, express any emotions or feelings, and can't own books, paintings, and any other types of art.

Why is this a story now? I think my state had a no smiling thing years ago, but then they started biometrics years ago also. Being a far left state must have something to do with that authoritarianism.

You still don't understand me, do you? I'm not that complicated.

I do not like how such things are progressing. I understand it though. Without changing the laws, the states are within their right to do this. They have been using facial biometric data for at least a decade. They use strait faced photo's on legal state ID in case it is needed for more positive ID of someone with a similar face.

What worries me is the more advanced things get, the more advanced criminals get, and the easier the adept at such things can frame someone else.

I love technology, but in the wrong hands...

Of course you are not complicated. If your pea brain thinks something is from the GOP or 'conservative' then you will support it. If the same brain sees the same thing but it's tied to the Democrats or some other 'liberal' organization then you are against it.

The converse has also been shown to be true. If the pea brain does not know what the political affiliation is then for exampl if you do not like it then it comes from the 'left.'

Stupid is as stupid does.

A member of the Chaos Computer Club — a European hacker association, perhaps a bit like the Cult of the Dead Cow in the US — has shown that it’s possible to reproduce someone’s fingerprint, and thus break into systems protected by biometric fingerprint scanners, using just a photo of someone’s finger.http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/196503-hacker-clones-a-politicians-fingerprint-using-normal-long-distance-public-photos
