I really like the approach the team is taking thus far. Really stressing defense and physicality. They talk about improving defense every year but I don't remember them talking about it this much and especially the "attitude" part of it. Stephen Jackson is single handedly bringing that back to this team.

Duncan and Manu have an excuse on defense but everyone not so much. Defense is more about commitment and focus than athleticism.

Not that defense isn't about commitment and focus, but this notion that those are the basic elements of successful defenses is nonsense. This team has always stressed it, yet they've continued to decline. Why? Because defense is no different than offense, in the sense that you need talent to be good. Specifically, you either need to have an in their prime defensive anchor (someone who can play 36-38 mpg), a significant amount of plus defenders or both.

Presuming neither Blair nor Neal are in the rotation, that will help. So should Leonard, Green and Splitter having more experience and the overall "corporate knowledge" will be better too, both with them and the three late season additions. But expecting anything more than incremental improvement is unrealistic.

Training camp notebook: Pop distributes debate DVDs

NOTES

* A mysterious ‘KM’ could be seen marked on the Spurs’ two practice courts in blue tape on either side of the paint when training camp opened on Tuesday. Strips were later added stretching diagonally from foul line to baseline — forming a trapezoid, not a parallelogram, as Bonner astutely corrected a member of the media.

“I learned that from my daughter’s Sesame Street shape book,” he said.

Bonner revealed the identity of the mystery initials and stripes — the Karl Malone line, a visual guide for defenders to indicate when they should body up or play their opponent to drive the ball.

Powell no stranger to training camp battles (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2012/10/08/powell-no-stranger-to-training-camp-battles/)

“It’s a little crazy over that way,” said Powell, who has averaged 3.9 points and 2.9 rebounds in 315 career games. “I stay out of that right now.”
All the better to focus on the task at hand. Powell got off to a positive start in his first outing with the Spurs, amassing seven points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes. That would seem to have given Powell the lead over Eddy Curry and Derrick Brown for the 15th and final roster spot. (Assuming, of course, that the Spurs choose to carry a full regimen.)
But Powell said he isn’t about to get ahead of himself after one preseason game.
“You’d have to ask (Gregg Popovich),” he said about where he might stand after Saturday’s game. “It’s not my first time being in this position. I know the guys in my position want to do well. For me, it’s leave it out on the court and let that be for somebody else. I have to at least do my part. That’s the way I look at it.”

Brown appreciates slim opportunity to earn Spurs roster spot

“He actually gave (one-time All-Star) Gerald Wallace a run for his money every day in practice,” Jackson said. “I think that’s what opened a lot of people’s eyes that he belongs in this league.”

Brown, who averaged 8.1 points and 3.6 rebounds for a dismal Charlotte team last season, says his experience with the Bobcats has prepared him for this shot with the Spurs.

“I learned a long time ago, you can’t control the situation that you’re in, but you can control what you do in that situation,” Brown said. “If you learn from it, it makes you who you are.”

Pop didn't give a lot of hype to Witherspoon and basically called his game against Houston a fluke.

It's likely what it is: Witherspoon hasn't been good overall during the camp and will be cut. An alternate less likely scenario would be that Spurs like him and want to work with him in the long term. The issue is that he is only on an one year contract which doesn't help to have a long term project. Spurs might want to hide him for the reminder of the camp, waive him and then sign him after he clears waivers to a long term contract.
