(If you have any problems and can't login for whatever reason, email me at [email protected])

I've spent much of the last month working on this SpursTalk upgrade ... and it's finally ready to go live. I'm expecting there to be a lot of bugs and a lot of things that don't look/work right. Please post in this thread to alert me to anything you find. Also let me know if you have any questions about the new functionality.

My goal was to create a clean design with intuitive features. There's going to be an adjustment period for everyone but I think this is an important step in the right direction for SpursTalk. Everything is a lot more powerful and it gives us more room to grow.

Again, there are going to be bugs and the forum is very likely going to be slow as we fine tune everything -- I apologize in advance. I'll be actively fixing anything that pops up while also continuing to add more features. There's actually a lot more in store but we're doing it small steps to make sure that nothing breaks along the way :)

Special thanks to Kori Ellis, Muki and Slomo for making all this possible.

P.S.

I haven't slept in about 30 hours so pardon the typos :wakeup

I'll keep this second post updated as a FAQ.

How do I post a video?
Click on the video button on the editor and insert the link to the video. Press OK. Supported sites include Hulu, YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Metacafe, Google and facebook.

How do I embed a tweet?
http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203664&p=6125579&viewfull=1#post6125579

How do I ignore someone's signature?
On the upper right of each poster's signature box, there is a black X. Click that and the signature will disappear.

Will there be alternate skins?
Yes, eventually.

How do you embed tweets?

The code is [ tweet ] tweetID [ /tweet ] ... without the spaces, of course.

To find the tweetID, get a direct link to a tweet by clicking on the date of the tweet. The URL should look something like this: https://twitter.com/manuginobili/status/251356957368270848

Take that bold string of numbers at the end and put it in the tweet tags.

Result:

251356957368270848

One thing I noticed: I had 'spurstalk.com' bookmarked instead of 'www.spurstalk.com'. When I click on the bookmark, it doesn't show as logged in. It's probably because the cookies are stored as www.spurstalk.com. I don't like the "More Talk" top-level menu. Club and Politics should be directly on the top-level menu.

Is really more noticeable on the Club since the fonts are so large.

There's a TON of empty white space between the end of the thread title and where the thread stats begin. That's the only thing that really stands out to me. That could also be because I keep my resolution very high though. Makes it kind of hard on the eyes but the alternate skins should solve that.

That's because it's a fluid design. As you resize your browser, the forum resizes with it.

Speaking of which, on the to-do list is a fixed-width design. With monitors getting bigger and bigger, it's something that could be really useful, IMO.

Very nice job. Haven't had a chance to play with the mobile version yet, but if speed translates their too I'm more than happy. Also happy to hear there will be skin options (I enjoyed the black background, minimal signatures, etc. on the mobile version two generations ago).

The only knit I have is that it seems that when you click on a thread's last page it takes you to the very bottom of the page, which then requires scrolling up to the top of the page to read the earlier comments. This was not the case in the old set up. Not a big deal (one can scroll), but it would be nice to start with the top of the page.

Thanks for improving the user experience.

ace3g
09-30-2012, 06:09 PM
A couple of other minor things:

Link color needs to be changed to something other than main text.

After you send a post and are at the bottom of the page, although I like that it stays in the page you posted in (like before), when you are in the quick navigation section, possibly have the "forums" section before the "site areas". Usually after you are down posting you want to go back to the main forum or the section of the forum you were in. That or make the "current title" in the quick navigation link clickable, because right now it only goes to the drop down. If that makes any sense.

Kori Ellis
09-30-2012, 06:24 PM
..when you are in the quick navigation section, possibly have the "forums" section before the "site areas"...

Yeah, I noticed that earlier. It shouldn't be hard to change (I don't think.)

The feature of hiding one's signature is nice, but the page seems to reload when the function is used. Would it save time (and reduce server's workload) just to have the signature disappearing?

since you have implemented the tag feature anyway through the software for a drop down menu to appear after you type in "@" to list all the names like it would in twitter or start to auto fill the name in , so you don't have to worry about spelling or the username has numbers in their name, something you can't recall.

oh snap, 100 posts per page. I'm there.I haven't tried it out but that should work well for anyone with a decent internet connection.

Link color needs to be changed to something other than main text.Good suggestion.

If that makes any sense.I'll add some better navigation options at the bottom of threads. :tu

The feature of hiding one's signature is nice, but the page seems to reload when the function is used. Would it save time (and reduce server's workload) just to have the signature disappearing?Doing it automatically without the reload would be better but I haven't figured out a way to do it yet.

The Think Tank sometimes goes days without getting a new post, so it was nice to not have to go out to the Forums page to check it all the time.I'm still working on how to integrate the Think Tank. Could you guys possibly put the classic style as a selectable forum layout?A vintage style is in the works.

Whenever i click on a thread it always sends me to the last post even though i've never read the thread before.. Am i doing something wrong? It should go to the last unread post. If it's a thread that was started on the old version of the forum, then the jump might act weird. But if it's happening on new threads, that would be a bug. I'll keep testing it.

BTW what's the method for mentions? And wtf there's a notification everytime I'm quoted. To "mention" or "tag" someone, just type @ followed by their username (with no space). You have to spell it right but capitalization doesn't matter.

Question for Muki...

One issue that still remains and had even with the old software is when using the back button on Firefox.

Basically, when I go inside a thread then use the back button to back out, it loads the page from the browser cache, and so it doesn't mark it as read and still shows bold. The workaround that I've used all these years is to click on the forum link instead of using the back button and that works (The back button works fine in Safari, not sure on other browsers).

I looked at the Cache-Control header the server sends and right now it's just 'private'. Is there a way to perhaps use mod_headers and add 'must-revalidate' to the Cache-Control header for the site? I think that would fix the cache issue and still not ditch the cache entirely in pages that have not changed.

It's decidedly less awesome if you like to sometimes read the threads without signing in, however, as I often do. But, then, since I was the only person bothered that we're no longer automatically signed off after being idle for an hour, I'm guessing this is something that's only an issue for me and is, therefore, something I can solve pretty easily and learn to deal with.

I like the red notification of quotes, but why show notifications when you were the one who quoted? Obviously you know you quoted someone.

i miss the actual dates of posts being on there, none of this "3 weeks ago" crap

The only reason dates matter is so you can throw it in someone's face when they actually said something. :)

Just wanted to pop in to say that I love the new look of the forum, with the new features it's a much more dynamic board, and feels like a real step up. :toast

Thanks for all the work you behind the scenes people put into getting everything ready for another fun season. At least we'll have a nicer place to bitch and moan when we have another "regular season champs" type year. ;)

So do I, along with the actual time instead of "3 hours ago" BS.

My biggest gripe is not being able to see embedded links. They need to be underlined, colored, or something. I couldn't find any options to do so.

The search feature seems to be worse also.

A few things:

1. The quick reply box seems like it is separate from the page itself, so it loads at different times than when the page/posts above loads.

2. In live mode, it scrolls constantly, you lose your space while reading/typing. Would be nice if some how only the scroll bar would change.

3. Still looking for a solution through vbulletin support pages on why tab key isn't working to send quick reply

Figuring out how to set the refresh timing and eliminating the double-posts would be helpful, but I do like it better than having to hit refresh a thousand times. There were a couple of times that it refreshed out from under me while typing.

Yeah, I was locked out of the site for the final minutes of the game...

Might have to change the refresh rate of the live mode to 10-15 sec

Work in progress. This is the first time we've had major traffic since the upgrade. Still in the process of optimizing.

Might have already been stated - but when I get my notification that someone has quoted me, often times I can't see who or what if they are bolded because its too dark on my profile.

Click on your username on the top right hand corner of the forum and go to "Control Panel". Under "My Settings" on the left, go to "Edit Profile". You are looking for "Custom User Title". Hope that helps..

Blue would be a poor choice. And anyone can make text any color they choose.

No, you can make your own hyperlinks a color other than blue. And so can everyone else.

So instead of timvp adding a single line into css, we just have to convince everybody to mark their urls? You're a hoot.

I recommend that first thing the next day, or when timvp posts his quick grades, (whichever is first), game threads should no longer be stickied.

Hi timvp/Kori Ellis, is it possible to have a section for Spurs Article Related? Sometimes I want to read some good stuff for our Spurs. I mean it's easier if there's a compilation for that. Because I forgot some title of the article.
