- the Saints were ranked #29 in "cart offs" the year that Goodell claimed there was a bounty program
- when brought to court, Goodell didn't have a leg to stand on
Goodell has been under pressure for years to make the game safer with all of the concussion talk, so he and the NFL decided to attack the Saints (who were a top 5 team at the time) in order to attract headlines despite knowing that every other team does the exact same thing. it just wouldn't be as sexy as of headline in the papers if he had chosen the Buffalo Bills or the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It doesn't change the fact that the Saints got away with murder against the Vikings in the NFC Title game, fueled by the motivation provided by the illegal bounty system..
