Ann Romney: Mormon missions and U.S. military are ‘different ways of serving’

The wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Thursday said that her husband and sons had not joined the U.S. military but had found “different ways of serving” by going on religious missions (http://facts.randomhistory.com/mitt-romney-facts.html) in France, England, Australia and Chile as part of their obligation to the Mormon church.

During an interview on ABC’s The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked Ann Romney how she would explain to the families of fallen soldiers why her husband and sons had not served their country.
“When I read about your husband, what I had read — and maybe you can correct this — is that the reason he didn’t serve in Vietnam was because it was against the religion,” Goldberg said.

“That’s not correct,” Ann Romney insisted.

“He was serving his mission, and my five
sons have also served missions. None served in the military, but I do have one son that feels that he’s giving back to his country in a significant way where he is now a doctor and he is taking care of veterans.”

“So, you know, we find different ways of serving,” she added. “And my husband and my five boys did serve missions, did not serve in the military.”

And Gecko said a few years ago that his boys, super patriots all, didn't sign up for Iraq or Afghanistan because serving Gecko's Pres campaign was serving, helping the country. :lol

Barry's girls are too young to serve. They still have a chance later to get killed, maimed, mind destroyed for the oilcos and American imperialism. And his girls have enough money and security not to join the military like a lot of poor blacks and browns do for a job.

While I think it's true that people can serve their country in different ways, saying that they've "served missions" is a step too far. Unless you want to consider that Obama "served missions" by being a community organizer, or that the local Dunkin Donuts guy "served missions" by giving me the correct order.

Why are you limiting it to uncles? That's rather specific. My mother, aunt, an uncle, my father, my stepfather, and my stepgrandfather all served. (Mom, aunt, uncle in the Army, father, stepfather Air Force, stepgrandfather Coast Guard)

I will respect who i want to respect and yours and most republicans I could give 2 shits about their service...when you lying, racist ass mofo's start acting like respectable human beings and stop trying to play the upright / Christian card then maybe I'll reconsider...

In fact ALL republicans in congress decided obstruction / treason was a good policy for running the country the last 4 yrs and while they will NEVER admit to this shit in public any one with half a brain knows it's because the President *aka* Mr Count Choco-latte looks like the sky at night...

Is it? *shrug* I'm not really familiar with the Mormon church. If that's the case, comment partially rescinded. I still think it's a conflation of meanings... the "missions" of a Mormon representatives aren't usually what people think of when they hear the word mission.

While I understand the term missionary, I don't think I've ever actually heard someone refer to what they do as "missions". I've heard them say things like, "It's my mission to do this for God", but in a way that was interchangeable with other tersm like duty, calling, etc etc. *shrug* As I said in the OP, not a big deal either way. :)

As much as I dislike Obama, it's shit like this that makes me loathe Romney and the party he represents.

It's called separation of church and state/ Proselytizing and military service are not comparable in the same way that being a salesman and a cop are not comparable.

And that's no shit: Mormon missionary work is OJT for sales. If you are in frontline sales and you get a Mormon fresh off of their mission applying then you had best hire them in a heartbeat. That is exactly what they have been doing for two years: selling Mormonism door to door.

But to say that door to door religion sales is analogous to military service is offensive on several fronts. First one is serving your country and the other is pushing a fairy tale. Second, a mormon missionary sent to subsaharan africa might have some scary moments every month or so but compare that to some grunt recon in afghanistan or hazardous duty.

It's not so much that they are cowards. I cannot speak to that but it does speak to how completely out of touch with reality they are. Mission work in france for the church is nothing like US military service in afghanistan. It's just not and it's insulting to suggest it is.

Yes, and the "mission" of Dunkin Donuts is to serve donuts and coffee to make a profit, but I wouldn't say most people equate Dunkin Donut's "mission" or "mission statement" with the missions carried out by the military. Trying to say the two are equal is disgenuous in my eyes. But then again, I'm an atheist soldier, so that might be my hangup :lol

All young adult Mormon males are encouraged to do church mission work. They are the guys you see all around town in short-sleeve white dress shirts and blue pants, often on bicycles. To equate that to serving one's country is ridiculous.

According to reports, Romney spent part of his time living in luxury accomodations while he supervised other Mormon young men in France.

For six months of his 30-month stay in France, Mr. Romney lived in a luxurious Paris home – the Mormon Home valued at $12-million in today's dollars. Address 3 Rue de Lota, Paris 75016... So palatial was the home that it was bought from the Mormons by the United Arab Emirates for use as its embassy. It is no longer the embassy, however.
