Romney For President Announces Military Advisory Council
Today, Romney for President announced its Military Advisory Council.
“I am deeply honored to have the support of so many of our most accomplished military leaders,” said Mitt Romney. “Together we will restore our military might and ensure that America can defend and protect our interests, our allies, and our people, both at home and abroad. I will never forget that the greatest responsibility of an American president is in exercising the role of commander-in-chief. That role is sacred, and when I am president, I will never put my own political interests ahead of our military and our men and women in uniform.”
“I’m proud to be supporting Mitt Romney in this critical election about our nation’s future,” said General Tommy Franks, USA (Ret.), Past Commander, U.S. Central Command. “Governor Romney is committed to restoring America’s leadership role in the world. Instead of playing politics with our military, he will strengthen our defense posture by reversing the President’s devastating defense cuts. The fact of the matter is that we cannot afford another four years of feckless foreign policy. We need level-headed leadership which will protect our interests and defend our values with clarity and without apology.”
“I consider the unprecedented national debt amongst the five greatest threats to the security of our great nation,” said General James Conway, USMC (Ret.), Past Commandant of the Marine Corps. “And yet, I see no indication the current administration, if re-elected, is intent on changing that trajectory. Clearly Defense should bear a portion of the burden in order to regain control of our debt, but the idea of massive military cuts -- at a time of increased global instability—should not even be in the cards. As I listen to Mitt Romney, I am convinced that he 'gets it'.”

Few living Americans can speak with as much authority about "years of feckless foreign policy" as can Tommy "Rumsfeld's water boy (http://books.google.com/books?id=WzIRAYrooq8C&pg=PA93&lpg=PA93&dq=tommy+franks+title+motherfuckers&source=bl&ots=CfXtDQzjtF&sig=mR8ErJULOZEkLvmKauymltKpupo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=CEqAUPf_BIXx0gGY6YDoDQ&ved=0CCsQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=tommy%20franks%20title%20motherfuckers&f=false)" Franks, who comes in at No. 4 (http://ricks.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2010/06/02/the_worst_general_in_american_history) on a Foreign Policy list of worst US generals ever. As readers of our lie-by-lie Iraq timeline (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2011/12/leadup-iraq-war-timeline) will recall, Franks oversaw CENTCOM from 2000 to 2003 and scripted the initial conduct of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Franks:
Deliberately concealed (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2011/12/leadup-iraq-war-timeline) from the American public how in 2001, at Bush White House's request, he was planning an Iraq invasion—while we were still trying to topple the Taliban and find bin Laden in Afghanistan.
Lost track of bin Laden at Tora Bora in late 2001 (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A62618-2002Apr16?language=printer), then claimed he hadn't (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/19/opinion/19franks.html), then was proven wrong (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D04E7DE1730F93AA15752C1A96F9C8B 63&ref=tommyrfranks).
Perpetuated (https://drezner.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2004/08/03/more_from_tommy_franks) the bogus "weapons of mass destruction" myth about Iraq.
Ignored warnings from his CENTCOM predecessor (http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB207/index.htm) that Iraq wouldn't be a walk in the park, and disregarded an earlier series of US war games (http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB207/index.htm), titled Desert Crossing, that predicted many of the difficulties of an Iraq occupation.
Completely failed to plan for any post-conflict cleanup (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/15/washington/15military.html) after the predicted fall of Saddam Hussein. "You pay attention to the day after," he reportedly told the administration (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/07/books/review/Sanger-t.html?ref=books&_r=0), "I'll pay attention to the day of." Here are the briefing slides (http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB214/Tab%20L.pdf) he showed administration officials in which he described "post-hostilities" operations in Iraq as "unknown," and here's where he estimated (http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB214/Tab%20K%20-%20page%2010.pdf) we'd have a mop-up force of about 5,000 US troops in Iraq by 2006. (Actual US forces in Iraq throughout that year averaged about 141,000 (http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/R40682.pdf).)
Authored one of the most nakedly self-serving, embarrassingly written military memoirs (http://books.google.com/books?id=Wre5JgvVMowC&pg=PT629&lpg=PT629&dq=tommy+franks+title+motherfuckers&source=bl&ots=34X9t_BlfM&sig=Gte6nLNLK99pcCG8O46nz_u118k&hl=en&sa=X&ei=CEqAUPf_BIXx0gGY6YDoDQ&ved=0CCAQ6AEwAA) of all time. ("Rumsfeld fixed me in his thoughtful blue gaze.")
