Make no mistake about it, Obama was strong from the very moment that he stepped on the stage. However, the difference between a win and a romp in these debates is moments like horses and bayonets. Romney went from the perception that he was a foreign policy lightweight with voters to actually confirming to voters that he is not ready to be Commander in Chief.

Barry can be as snarky as he wants in the debates but he's going to keep falling behind in the polls because Americans don't want an asshole as President. And liberals will keep wondering why he's behind when all their friends voted for him. And when he wins they'll conclude Romney stole the election.

Besides, the Army uses a shitload of bayonets.

Actually, I don't know who will win, but should it be Barry, I fully expect the voter fraud card to the used plentifully soon thereafter, tbh.

I believe horses were and still are used in Afghanistan by the US military. I got the president's point, but its a bit ironic that in trying to score cheap points about Mitt Romney's lack of knowledge on what our miliatry currently uses he got it so wrong. He should have said cannons and muskets.

the condescending bayonet zinger was justifiably so, Gecko exposed as being in way over his head, so far below Presidential level it's silly. Of course, the Repugs already gave us a similar faker in dubya.

Gecko's ignorance, frat boy con job, slimy sales job, and "I crammed for this but I don't understand a fucking thing" facade is hilarious. Gecko's the Best, the Best, Better Than All The Rest (of the ridiculous Repug primary field. Santorum? Gingrich? :lol )

And of course, he's a serial felony tax evader until he shows the last 10 years of his (obviously campaign-killing) tax returns.

I did find it laughable that Romney's apparent understanding of how militaries work as "more stuff is better".

Ask any country who owns or fields T-80's and T-90's if they would be comfortable going 2:1 with US Abrams.

Or, for that matter, going 3:1 with T-72's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_73_Easting) (see link for fascinating read)

The size of our Navy is at levels not seen since 1916.
You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916.OK, how was Romney's position misrepresented?

If anything, Obama may have accepted more of a claim than Romney actually made (fewer rather than equal to).

DarrinS
10-23-2012, 06:00 PM
Our Navy is smaller now than any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We're now down to 285. We're headed down to the - to the low 200s if we go through with sequestration. That's unacceptable to me. I want to make sure that we have the ships that are required by our Navy.

So it wasn't misrepresented. It was just a stupid point for Mittens to make in the first place.

Anyone is free to disagree with the Navy as to how many ships it needs, and Obama explained why. Don't get mad because Mittens looked kind of dumb and a meme was born. I'm sure Mittens used that talking point many times in his stump speeches -- too bad for you someone was listening to him and not Chris Matthews.

It's when you misrepresent your opponent's position.

Romney was complaining that the number of naval vessels was at their lowest since 1917 (forgot the exact year he brought up....). Obama simply put Romneys comment into the proper context by citing technological advance as one rationale for reduced numbers of ships. He took it back to horses and bayonets to emphasize the point. Well played imo.

People would have you think that he got it wrong because horses and bayonets are still in use. That point is quite irrelevant given the context of Obamas statement though.

There are fewer horses and bayonets in use today due to technological advances just as Obama feels that fewer naval vessels are needed....for the same reason. Whether or not he's right is for another discussion.

ChumpDumper

lol
The historical records of the Navy show that in 1916, the Navy had 245 ships....

The current level of ships, 285 in fiscal 2011, is actually not even the lowest since 1916. The historical list shows that the lowest ship force was reached during the Bush administration, when the number of ships fell to 278 in 2007. Given the change over time in the composition of the naval force, that probably is the most relevant comparison — and the trend line is up.http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/romneys-claim-that-the-navy-is-as-small-as-in-1916/2012/10/08/6f47e6d6-1191-11e2-be82-c3411b7680a9_blog.html

Why is it always bad to be a condescending dick? Sometimes people putting forth stupid arguments deserve nothing more than that. Acting as if the number of warships in naval service compared to some arbitrary number nearly a century old is just fucking stupid. A modern aircraft carrier can do more than nearly the entire navy in 1917 and it sure as hell can project more power than the navy could in 1917. How many ICBMs did they have in 1917, for that matter?

See, when dealing with people like Darrin or Romney sometimes being condescending dick is OK because being a condescending dick is much better than being a blithering dumb ass.

I think his knocking down the idea that something was so much better a 100 years ago struck a chord with young people who get sick of hearing about things were so much better back in the good old days.
