The iPad Mini Seems Crazy Expensive

There's almost no question that the iPad Mini is a terrific device; it's got too much pedigree and money behind it to be anything else. But barring some sort of miracle from on Ive, it's also certifiably overpriced. And that's a bad sign for Apple.
At first blush, the iPad Mini has a lot to recommend it relative to the competition. Apple's managed to put a bigger display on a thinner and lighter device, which—these days, especially—is mobile computing's endgame. iOS is the most mature tablet ecosystem by a good stretch, which is worth no small something. And it comes in 4G, which much of the 7-inch competition currently lacks.

But look a little closer. With products this small that weight difference amounts to barely noticeable fractions of a pound. At 7.9 inches the iPad Mini is bigger than the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7, but the whole point of a smaller tablet is to be, well, smaller. More portable. Oh, and speaking of that display: the iPad Mini's has 25% fewer pixels per inch compared to its Amazon and Google competitors. It doesn't just fall short of retina; it'll be noticeably worse.

That's partly because the iPad Mini's processor is a relatively underpowered dual-core A5, compared to the Fire HD's 1.2GHz dual-core OMAP and Nexus 7's quad-core Tegra 3. It just can't push that many pixels. Along those lines, it's safe to assume that the Mini has half the RAM of its competitors (although that doesn't matter much). Remember, too, that Amazon's got about as strong a garden as Apple's (and with weaker walls), and Google's catching up quickly.

All of which means that when you look at the iPad Mini next to the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7, you get the impression that it's a pretty level playing field. And then you look at the prices.

The 16GB Wi-Fi iPad Mini costs $330, which is a whopping $130 more than the equivalent Kindle Fire HD. That's a 65 percent premium for a device that's not decidedly better in any way other than size and apps. It's only $80 (32 percent) more than the 16GB Nexus 7, but that may be for a limited time; Google's expected to cut prices drastically next week.

Put it another way: for $300—still 10-percent less than the 16GB iPad Mini—you can get a bigger, even more pixel-dense 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, or a 32GB Nook HD Plus. The full price comparison chart is here, and almost defies belief.

There's a temptation to say that it's just Apple charging Apple prices, but that instinct is dated. The real genius of the original iPad wasn't just that it was first—it was also cheapest. It took competitors a full year to come up with a tablet that could even remotely compete at $500. Ditto the MacBook Air of the last several years; it set a price so low for ultrabook-style computers that Intel had to start a $300 slush fund to help PC manufactures hit that price point. The Apple of the last two years, thanks in large part to its Apple Store retail dominance, has been simply unbeatable. Until now.

Charging so much more for a product that's not clearly so much better is a major step backwards for Apple, especially given its unfamiliar position in the small tablet space as a follower. You don't enter an established market—Amazon's in its second generation of Kindle Fires already, and has millions of loyal customers at its disposal—by asking people to assume your offering is nearly two times better than what they already know to be great.

At best Apple's iPad Mini pricing is misguided; at worst, it's arrogant. Most of all, though, it's surprising, especially given how important smaller tablets are going to be for schools and kids, the trenches in which Amazon and Google are fighting for an entire generation of loyal users.

Is the iPad Mini great? Sure, probably. Will people buy lots and lots of them? Most likely. But they'll also decide to save themselves $130 more often than not. And, more importantly, they'll be back on the lookout for the Apple premium of old, the cool tax. There are plenty of things in this world worse than an overpriced gadget. But that doesn't mean we can't scratch our heads over Apple's missed opportunity—and worrisome future.

I shouldn't probably be saying this being an iOS dev and all, but part of me really wants this thing to flop. I don't really like this product because I don't think it's an area where Apple can effectively compete and keep their high margins. It was also launched using their 2nd tier tech, which to me indicates it's an area where Apple wants to simply compete in price but has little interest in actually innovating. And to top it off, because of the price ranges, I completely agree that it makes things like the iPod Touch pricing ridiculous.

Google Nexus 7 is still the best price/performance machine in the market. I'd get one if I had an interest in a tablet. Maybe next gen if they're similarly priced.

Yeah, the Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD are your best bets. I bought a Fire on a whim just so I could entertain my kids while driving to Corpus and it's really a neat little tablet. The one complaint I had was the lack of camera, which I think the HD fixed. It's very simplistic and easy to use, perfect for kids. Plus you can borrow books for kids to read, which is definitely a huge bonus for elementary students.

For more savvy users, the Nexus 7 is perfect both in price and size. I've actually thought of buying one so I can talk with my best friend in Phoenix and with the kids. But that point my be rendered moot with my impending purchase of the HTC One X or Galaxy S III (depending on available funds). And no, my switch to Android has nothing to do with getting tired of iOS and more to do with the fact that I can stream live sports from a website (meaning football on the go).

I like a 10" tablet, but it's just not convenient to carry around sometimes. My ex wife carries her Fire in her purse at times, so the screen size is perfect.

I just don't get why Apple even entered the 7" market, especially without a retina screen. I guess they thought they'd give it a nominal try or something.

Tim Cook: “We Would Never Make a 7-Inch Tablet”
By Brent Rose

Moments ago in Apple's earnings call, Tim Cook uttered something that is, frankly, stunning in its obliviousness:

Let me be clear. We would not make one of the seven-inch tablets. We don't think they're good products, and we would never make one. Not just because it's seven inches but for many reasons. One of the reasons, however, is size.

Cook goes on to say that "The difference in just the real-estate size between the the 7.9 (almost 8) versus the 7 is 35 percent. And when you look at the usable area, it's much greater than that. It's from 50 to 67 percent." What is this "usable area," exactly? Is he talking about the back of it? Like, it's a solid surface you can use when you need to sign checks? And how you add 0.9 diagonal inches and come away with 67 percent more useable area is a conundrum that will have mathematicians scratching their heads for eons to come (okay, maybe not). Then he goes on:

"iPad mini is a fantastic product," he continues, probably throwing back another stiff drink. "It's not a compromised product like the 7-inch tablets. It's in a whole different league."

Are. You. &^@%ing. Kidding. Me. You just made a 7.9-inch tablet, and you're dissing 7-inch tablets as compromised? Not only that, as we showed earlier, your 7.9-inch tablet has far fewer pixels than the competing 7-inch tablets! You're cramming a worse screen in there, charging more, and accusing others of compromise? Ballsy.

Apparently that's why you have to charge $130 more than the others. See, tablet-inches cost $144.45 each, so multiply that by 0.9 and it all makes sense.

Dude, is this person a complete shut in? This has been happening with the tablets starting with the nook color (at least that I paid attention too, could have been earlier). i.e. this has been happening for years and it fits much better than the ipad mini. This is pretty bad.

See? there you go (though a mount for a 10 in tablet seems like it would just take up too much space).

Anyway, I may end up mounting my nook color... Too late to sell it for any amount of value. I need to come up with a good use for it especially since development continues for it (fully functioning JB now)

without a better screen hard to justify the extra cost at this size imo
