The big question will be how big the storm surge is. If they really get a 10' storm surge plus all that rain the river waters back up and spread out because they can't drain to the sea.

Category just measures wind speed. The wind isn't what will make this thing dangerous, it will be the flooding. This thing technically isn't even a hurricane anymore since it's not being fed by warm ocean water anymore...It's a bad ass noreaster that got a lot of moist air sucked into it from the hurricane.

water levels around NYC are already past the max level from last year's Irene which flooded some subways, and to be much higher between now and Tue morn.

MannyIsGod
10-29-2012, 10:50 AM
The storm is undergoing really big strengthening this morning. Its being fed both by the warm gulf stream since its a warm core (tropical) system but also by the energy from the jet stream off to the east. Its the best of both worlds which is why when this happened before it was termed "the perfect storm".

But just to give you some perspective on how much stronger Sandy is, the pressures that are currently being measured are sub 940 mb. The Perfect Storm had a lowest pressure of 971. Sandy has the largest wind field of any tropical cyclone I've ever seen and that includes a storm like Ike which was huge. Its windfield is bout 4 times larger than Katrina right now (which was also a large storm).

So while surge will be a large impact, do not discount the wind at all. There are going to be some long times of very strong winds and that will do a lot of damage as well. There will be flooding due to high rain amounts and there will be incredible amounts of snow dropped in spots (first time I've ever seen the NHC even mention snow much less issue a forecast for 3 feet of it). This is likely a once in a life time storm and the impact is going to be gigantic.

MannyIsGod

A big problem in NYC with the winds will be the skycrapers being so high above ground. Hurricane force winds at the surface will be much stronger as you start to go up in the atmospere so those buildings will feel a lot more stress than lower buildings. They should be fine, but any debris breaking windows and what not can cause a lot of damage.

When that gets over 10.5 the shit really gets real for the NYC subway system.

I remember watching some "underground explorer" shows where they show all sorts of stuff underground, as well as the creaky infrastructure in some places.

The amount of copper phone wire and other abandoned shit down there makes me shudder to think what will happen when you introduce all that stuff to seawater. Fixing all this shit is going to be expensive as fuck.

I will guess that we will see a pretty downturn in German and other foreign stock markets as the insurance companies most on the hook for large disasters, have to liquidate/sell assets to pay claims for what the insurance industry calls Excess of Loss reinsurance. (insurance on insurance)

If you can short any property and casualty insurer... now is time to do so, although everyone else probably has beaten you to the punch, at this point.

In San Francisco in 1906, the police behaved pretty well, but then the U.S. Army marched in and imposed its own version of order. One man was bayoneted by a soldier after taking supplies at the invitation of the proprietor of a grocery doomed to burn. A bank cashier was shot trying to open his own bank's safe. A man trying to rescue someone trapped in the rubble was shot dead after being mistaken for a looter. Estimates of those killed by the authorities run as high as 500, but actual numbers will never be known because the bodies of the killed were thrown into the flames and the bay.

Contracts aren't that specific to my experience, although I have never seen any such contracts for insurers with exposure to Nor' easters. Possible, but I would say it is unlikely they make such a distinction.

nah bro. I saw a pic on the news; they put up some of those bowling lane bumpers up. Subways = safe

Yeah, they shut them all down and blockaded. Moved some of the trains to higher ground. Already had this stuff figured out for Irene a year ago.

Manny: how rare is it to have a storm like this in late OCT?

Storms like this where you have a warm core (hurricane) phasing with the jet stream only happen in late fall because that when the jet is far enough south. But this is basically a once in a lifetime storm. The "perfect" storm that the book and movie were based off of was FAR weaker than this.

And remember, all those buildings have basements (which is where their boilers and mechanical rooms are) and all the cities infrastructure like gas lines, electrical lines, phone lines, etc, are all in underground tunnels that are now flooded with seawater. Those buildings are about to go into winter without heat.
