Romney Releases Another False Ad, Revives Claim That Obama ‘Gutted’ Welfare Reform (http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/10/31/1114581/romney-revives-false-welfare-ad/)
Romney’s claim that President Obama has “gutted the welfare work requirement” through a waiver program that Republican governors, including Romney himself (http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/08/07/649621/romney-ad-welfare-reform/), have long asked for.

the welfare work requirements will remain in place (http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa/policy/im-ofa/2012/im201203/im201203.html) even if states are granted waivers. The major change is that states will be granted more leeway (http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/08/07/649621/romney-ad-welfare-reform/) in how they transition welfare recipients into jobs. That is a change sought and supported by many Republican governors, like Romney endorser Rick Snyder (MI), who said of the program, “More flexibility to governors is a good thing (http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/08/28/759341/michigan-republican-gov-welfare/).”

Jeep not moving production to China, Mr. Romney
Chrysler as early as June 2011 had said it was considering adding Jeep production in China.

"We are working to establish a global enterprise and previously announced our intent to return Jeep production to China, the world's largest auto market, in order to satisfy local market demand, which would not otherwise be accessible," said Marchionne in the email on Tuesday.

And he also reaffirmed previous Chrysler announcements about increasing its Jeep production at plants in Ohio, Illinois (http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/Illinois) and Detroit.
"We will invest more than $1.7 billion to develop and produce the next-generation Jeep SUV, the successor of the Jeep Liberty (http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/Jeep+Liberty) -- including $500 million directly to tool and expand our Toledo Assembly Complex and will be adding about 1,100 jobs on a second shift by 2013," his email to employees said.

The question is: will this scurrilous tactic have negative consequences?

Unfortunately, there is some evidence that facts and the people who check them don’t carry the same weight that they once did.

First, the right’s disinformation machine is, explicitly and implicitly, making the argument that facts (science, math, evidence) are fungible and have been co-opted by liberal eggheads. They have declared war on facts in response to what they claim is a liberal war on faith.

This is an utterly false and ridiculous argument, but it works on some people.

According to a Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS News Swing State poll released Wednesday (http://www.quinnipiac.edu/institutes-centers/polling-institute/presidential-swing-states-%28fl-oh-and-pa%29/release-detail?ReleaseID=1812), President Obama has a 9 percentage point lead over Romney in Ohio among likely voters on the question of who is honest and trustworthy (most people thought that the president was honest while most would not say the same about Romney). But that same poll found that the president only had a 5-point lead in the horse race numbers in Ohio.

The president had a similarly large lead on the honesty question in Florida in Virginia, but in those states the poll found the race to be virtually tied — the president had a small lead that was within the margin of error.
How is it that so many people are willing to support a man who they don’t believe is honest or trustworthy?

The poll also found that most voters didn’t believe that Romney cared about their problems. On the other hand, at least 60 percent of voters in each state said that they believed that the president cared about their problems.
Who votes for a man who doesn’t care about you over a man who does?

I recognize that Obama hatred is a real thing, but disliking the president so much that you would do harm to yourself by voting for someone who you admit you don’t trust seems to be taking things to extremes.

All the voters who are aware of Romney’s fact-mangling but vote for him anyway must ask themselves this question: are they granting him the liberty to lie?

And so it turns out that after Superstorm Sandy battered the East Coast, Mitt Romney is far more supportive of the government agency in charge of coordinating disaster relief. Only last year, as Romney hewed to the right while battling for the GOP nomination, he seemed to downplay the federal government's role in disaster response.

"Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction," Romney said at a debate last June. "And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that's even better."

Asked by moderator John King of CNN whether that would include disaster relief, Romney said: "We cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids."

Now, a week before Election Day, after of a massive disaster, Romney's campaign is reassuring voters that his administration wouldn't leave disaster victims in the lurch. The public's attention is locked on the devastation caused by Sandy at a time when Romney and President Barack Obama are locked in a close presidential campaign. With Obama heavily involved in getting federal funds to those in trouble, the Romney campaign moved quickly to reassure the public it supports a strong program of storm relief.

"I believe that FEMA plays a key role in working with states and localities to prepare for and respond to natural disasters," Romney said in a statement supplied by his campaign Wednesday. "As president, I will ensure FEMA has the funding it needs to fulfill its mission, while directing maximum resources to the first responders who work tirelessly to help those in need, because states and localities are in the best position to get aid to the individuals and communities affected by natural disasters."

Romney Campaign Blames Obama For Closed BBQ Restaurant With Repeated Health Violations (http://thinkprogress.org.feedsportal.com/c/34726/f/638927/s/25200629/l/0Lthinkprogress0Borg0Celection0C20A120C110C0A10C11 222110Cromney0Ecampaign0Eblames0Eobama0Efor0Eclose d0Ebbq0Erestaurant0Ewith0Erepeated0Ehealth0Eviolat ions0C/story01.htm)

A new ad by the Romney campaign, titled “Bill’s BBQ,” highlights a small chain of barbecue restaurants in Richmond, Virginia, which closed in September. The ad suggests that the closure of the 82-year-old company went out of business because President Obama has not improved the economy. But a ThinkProgress review of news reports and public health records suggest the company may have had other problems — and that other similar restaurants in the same area are doing quite well.

Bill’s released a statement explaining (http://wtvr.com/2012/09/11/bills-barbecue-closing-all-va-restaurants-this-week/) “changing marketing realities and significant costs of upgrading operations,” make it no longer feasible for the company to operate in an economy that has struggled for five years (http://www2.timesdispatch.com/business/2012/sep/15/tdbiz01-bills-barbecue-only-filling-pre-orders-ar-2206922/). That timeline suggests that the company had been in trouble even before the economic meltdown of 2008 and had struggled to adjust to compete with other restaurants.

Romney: Seniors ‘most likely’ won’t get to see doctor if Obama wins

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney took his claim that President Barack Obama had stolen $716 billion from Medicare to the next level on Thursday and asserted that seniors “most likely” would not be able to see specialists if the president is re-elected.

Throughout the last few months of the 2012 presidential race, Romney’s campaign has been insisting that Obama “robbed” $716 billion from Medicare to pay for the Affordable Care Act, a claim that PolitiFact rated as “mostly false (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/aug/15/mitt-romney/mitt-romney-said-barack-obama-first-history-rob-me/).”

“If he or she makes a call to the doctor and if Obamacare is installed and the president’s re-elected, why when making that call, you’re mostly likely going to have the receptionist come back and say, ‘Sorry, we’re not taking in more Medicare patients.’”

After pausing for boos and moans from his supporters, Romney continued: “Because the president is cutting Medicare to pay for Obamacare.”

A Washington Post (http://s.tt/1ry7H)fact check (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/election-2012/wp/2012/10/03/fact-check-the-700b-medicare-cut/) examined Romney’s claim last month and found that “spending does not decrease in Medicare year after year; the reduction is from anticipated levels of spending in future years.”
“The savings mostly are wrung from health-care providers, not Medicare beneficiaries — who, as a result of the health-care law, ended up with new benefits for preventive care and prescription drugs,” the Post‘s Glenn Kessler wrote.
